Announcing the Canon 1014-XLS MAX 8 Camera Modification: Give your Canon 1014-XLS a giant leap forward by having us convert it to MAX 8, a 16 x 9 widescreen format. This is the second super 8 camera we have introduced with a widened gate (Classic Professional MAX 8 in 2005) so that filmmakers can be HD ready. Widescreen images are essential for remaining competitive in a HD world, and shooting super8 in the modern 16 x 9 aspect ratio allows you to edit your super 8 images with other widescreen formats. The exposed film is then transferred on our custom modified widescreen gate, available on our M2 Scanner or Y Front Ursa Diamond Scanner, giving you 20% more image on the super8 frame.
The Max 8 1014-XLS conversion includes gate modification, the adding of 16 x 9 framing lines to the viewfinder, removing the internal 85 filter which causes image degradation, increasing the take up torque so that the modern, thicker film stocks are less likely to jam, as well as recalibration of the exposure system so that all Pro8mm film stocks will accurately read the exposure from 50-500 ASA. This complete modernization package is available for $995.00. We currently have some MAX8 1014 XLS' in rental only for $300 a day, or $250 with any all inclusive film package.

No Subtitles Necessary a documentary of Hungarian filmmakers Laszlo Kovacs and Vilmos Zsigmond will premiere as an official selection of Cannes Classics at the 61st Annual Cannes International Film Festival on May 22. The documentary tracks a 50-year journey with Kovacs, ASC and Zsigmond, ASC, beginning with their arrival in the United States as political refugees from Hungary in February 1957.
"There is poetic justice in this film premiering at Cannes," says producer/director James Chressanthis, ASC. "Laszlo shot Easy Rider, an ultra low budget, counter culture film that was a favorite with critics and fans at Cannes in 1969. That was the film which finally opened doors for Laszlo in Hollywood. I am overjoyed that our film will screen at Cannes. It is a perfect return to the place that launched the career of Laszlo Kovacs and then, in turn, his artistic brother Vilmos Zsigmond. They became legends in their own time."
Pro8mm was honored to be entrusted with some of the Super 8 processing and scanning for this film. Chressanthis used our services for previous projects such as Brian's Song and the Dale Earnhardt Story. Chressanthis traces his inspiration for this project to 1984 when Kovacs conducted a seminar following a screening of Paper Moon at the American Film Institute (AFI). Chressanthis subsequently interned with Zsigmond during the production of The Witches of Eastwick in 1986. Chressanthis has worked on documentaries in the past, but he is primarily a narrative film cinematographer. He currently is filming and directing episodes of the hit TV series The Ghost Whisperer. The film will screen during Cine Gear Expo at the Universal Studios Back Lot on Saturday, June 21st. | |
