  • Pro8mm Offers 3 Distinctly Different Scanning Systems
    Scanner

Excerpt from Article: Beginning in March 2008 Pro8mm will begin offering 3 distinctly different Scan Systems. This will allow customers to choose between maximizing the Quality or the Economy of their transfers of 8 and 16mm film. Clients can custom build their transfers from the base price of each of our three systems by choosing which scanning system is best for them, Rank, Y-Front, or Millennium II HD. Then they can select options such as one light vs. full scene to scene color correction, scheduled vs. unscheduled, and from a variety of mastering formats, including hard drive. Each of these elements determine the per hour price. Additionally, options such as simul master, sync interlock, time code, a frame, and power windows are also part of the menu of choices.

For Maximum value, quality and efficiency, our extremely popular "ALL INCLUSIVE DISCOUNT PACKAGES" bundle together film, processing, prep and clean and transfer at one discounted price. These packages will be offered on The Y-Front and MM II. Purchased this way, scans on our new MM II scanner start at just $82 more for a 4 roll package than from under the old pricing ($278 for SD vs. $360 for HD) an unbelievable value for the quality and technology!

    NEW VISION3 FILM STOCK
    Film Box

Excerpt from Article: Only days after the November VISION3 launch by Kodak, Pro8mm has made available for purchase Pro8/19, reformatted at our Burbank facility from Kodak 5219 and loaded into convenient Super 8 cartridges. The first in the new VISION3 series of color negative film, Pro8/19 is a 500T negative stock that offers the filmmaker greater flexibility in exposure latitude with improved grain in the shadows. Pro8/19 adds 2 more stops of latitude in the over exposure, and improved grain structure in the shadows. These are two exciting improvements in the film stock which will make the imaging process easier to achieve and with even better results. Part of the Kodak Vision Family of Films, Pro8/19 is an extension of Vision2 Pro8/18, so it can be cut in seamlessly.

Among the first to try our new VISION3 is wedding videographer Alan Button, who writes "Happy New Year! I want to share highlights of a piece from a beautiful Indian wedding we shot in Miami with Pro8mm film, of course!! The wedding is going to be featured in the Sunday New York Times. You did a wonderful job processing and transferring the film and I'm in love the new 500T cut from the Kodak Vision 3 stock. It is amazing! I'll be shooting with it a lot! Thanks!

Alan had just previously written us this note "Having shot weddings on video for the last 5 years, I have always strived to achieve that elusive film look. One day I bit the bullet and decided to see what actual film looked like... of course I have seen plenty of movies shot on film but never a wedding. So we shot a couple of weddings with Super 8mm film from Pro8mm. When I got the footage back on mini dv I couldn't believe how beautiful it was! It had an artistic quality that I have never been able to create with video. I'm not sure if it was the film, the processing or the telecine... I have a feeling they all had a big impact on the look. During those weddings we shot just about every stock to see what looked best. I would shoot with any of the films again-they all looked great. except for a couple of rolls that we really underexposed... our fault! We fell in love the 50D, 250T, 500T negative stock and 100 BW reversal. The quality of these films is... dare I say "magical". The way they capture the light and shadows and motion in such a beautiful way... I just couldn't believe that was possible. I have never achieved anything with such texture, grain, and detail with video. My hope is when people see what is possible with film; we will be doing a lot more weddings on Super 8. Thanks, Alan Button

    MORE FROM OUR FANS...
    Guy in Airplane

Long time Pro8mm client Ben Mead shoots his new film "Death of the Reel." The idea is that the young people of Kansas have been zombified by their iPhones and iPods and have become celluloid illiterates who watch postage stamp-sized movies on tiny screens.

Guy Maddin flies to Kansas City, Missouri, in a vain attempt to save cinema as it continues to die from contempt and neglect. The tongue-in-cheek project, Death of the Reel, is being shot in classic Maddin style which is to say silent and on high-contrast black-and-white film. Sound effects and title cards will be inserted in post-production. The story begins in a Winnipeg bar where filmmaker Guy Maddin (played by, yes, Guy Maddin) reads a newspaper article declaring the death of cinema in the United States. He decides to ride - or fly - to the rescue."Guy is filming shots from his point of view, and no doubt that footage will have his very specific slant on things," stated Benjamin Meade."I haven't seen the script for this film we're making. Ben has it all in his head," Maddin said as pilot Ron Wright readied the Fairchild PT-19B, owned by the not-for-profit Commemorative Air Force.

    Horrors of War
    War

Peter John Ross writes "I have used Pro8mm for several years. Our feature film HORRORS OF WAR that used Pro8mm film stocks & telecine for several scenes is getting it's North American DVD release on November 6th, 2007 I was wondering if we could get a mention in your newsletter. Thanks!

HORRORS OF WAR is an independent feature film, now on DVD in 12 countries, including the U.S. and Canada distributed by Maverick Entertainment on DVD. HORRORS OF WAR is a sci fi action horror film wherein Hitler has created monsters like Zombies and Werewolves to combat the Allied forces.

The film is shot mostly in Super 16mm with some 35mm, but all of the flashbacks and dream sequences were shot in Super 8 with Pro8mm film stocks. Peter John Ross, one of the directors and producers felt strongly that as a cost cutting measure, we not use video or high definition. "HORRORS OF WAR is a period World War II movie; If any part of the movie were shot on video tape, I believe they would have just felt like something was off, or wrong. I have a long history of short films in Super 8 and have used Pro8mm film stocks and telecine for years. It was an obvious choice", says Ross. Director of Photography Scott Spears relished the opportunity to shoot super 8 and also supervised the transfer with Phil Vigeant.

    INDUSTRY JOBS

The last "leg" of the Tori Amos LEGS and BOOTS tour this December was California, from Sacramento to San Diego. Our client's production company used various forms of media capture including Pro8mm, 16mm, and HD Cam to shoot live concert footage, tour bus, back stage, behind the scenes, including costume changes of Tori for DVD material. Watch for the DVD release this spring with the Pro8 footage!

    Hanna

The recent block buster Hannah Montana "SPOTLIGHT WORLD TOUR" utilized some Pro8mmilm footage of the teen super star performing on stage with her famous father Billy Ray Cyrus. The footage may be included in some of the post tour products, including a new intereactive video game, motion picture and DVD.

    White Stripes

The White Stripes - You Don't Know What Love Is: Last issue we mentioned the White Stripes black and white music video that was shot on both Super8 and 16mm, processed in our lab and transferred on the Y FRONT. Here is the youtube link of the final finished cut.
