Summer is in full swing!
With the help of our first two missions teams we have been able to make some necessary repairs and improvements at the orphanage. We have also been able to serve our community by helping a local pastor who serves the tent city near the orphanage to replace their church's leaky tin roof with a cement roof that will allow them to build a second floor. |

Haiti the Beautiful
by former intern, Nate Lowe
|
"You should make it out to the beach! There are so many beautiful parts of Haiti that made me fall in love with this country!" she says excitedly with a twinkle in her eye "You should really get someone to drive you around to experience the other areas of Haiti!" I'm sitting here listening to this American as she tells me all the beautiful and exotic places in Haiti she has been to and how I need to get out and experience more of Haiti, but for some reason I'm not able to share in her excitement. Instead, the more she tells me of all the wonderful places she has been, the more frustrated I get and the deeper my heart sinks.
Growing up as a missionary kid in Asia, my parents taught me to not be a tourist; to not go to "exotic" countries and spend absurd amounts of money to experience pristine beaches, white-washed local cuisine and adventurous activities. From them, I learned to appreciate the beauty of a nation for its people and its culture. Now, when I hear someone telling me of the beautiful beaches, resorts and restaraunts I "must" see to appreciate the beauty of this country it saddens me.
Haiti is a beautiful country, absolutely rich in culture and religion. I have fallen in love with the beauty of Haiti that lives in the hearts of the people here. The beauty of a people made in the image of our God. The beauty of a people struggling to survive yet finding the strength to laugh and smile. The beauty of a people who recognize and appreciate life for every small blessing God bestows upon them. You may tell me I ought to get out and experience the beauty of God's creation in the beaches and resorts that capture such magnificent beauty. I will tell you, you need to walk down the alleyways and through the slums, and shake the hands of creation made in God's image, far more beautiful than a white beach or a lush garden. I will warn you, however, that God's image adorned by poverty and suffering will make you cry and break your heart, so you may want to stick to the beaches and gardens if you don't want God to mess up your life.
