Volume 5 Issue 2  - February 29, 2008

Where have all the employees gone?

Companies of all sizes, in every sector and industry, are missing opportunities, foregoing expansion and passing up revenue due to labour shortages.

Government and private sector economists state that construction, warehousing, hospitality, health care, transportation, administration, skilled trades, and other areas are affected as well. As the Canada-wide labour crunch intensifies, what can Delta businesses do to appeal to new employees and retain current workers?

To provide a forum for members and guests to explore this issue, the next Delta Chamber of Commerce Café, will be held on March 6, 3:00 - 5:30 pm, at the Delta Arts Council Firehall Centre for the Arts  (11489 - 84 Avenue, North Delta). Entitled Dealing with the Labour Crunch in Delta, it will focus on how to attract, engage and retain employees in today's tight labour market.

This Chamber Café is sponsored by two local businesses: Carol Sutton, CJS Managing Conflict Positively and Jacque Small, Catalyst Business Coaching.  Both have practices that facilitate business owners and managers to improve communication with employees, creating more productive working environments. They invite the community of Delta to participate in this collaborative conversation.

Some of the questions participants may choose to explore include: What new resources do businesses here need to increase their ability to attract, engage and retain employees? What role does "engagement" play in each participating company's employee retention strategy?

On March 6th, Chamber members and others are invited to;

  • talk about what's working for their companies,
  • hear about the gaps between business opportunities and worker availability, and
  • share opinions that can help develop new options for their organizations.

Registration is now open; participant numbers will be limited to allow sufficient time for comprehensive conversations; members $20; non-members $25; 604-946-4232 or www.deltachamber.com.

The Delta Chamber of Commerce provides a forum for members to "develop, connect and advocate" for themselves and each other. Networking builds relationships that produce new ideas, resources and options for members' companies.
