Highlights of September 2012 Delegates Assembly

Thanks to all who came out and filled the Carver auditorium at our first MCCPTA Delegates Assembly (DA) of the year last Thursday September 27, and to those who joined us before the meeting for MCCPTA Presents: Maryland Education Changes and Reforms.  Please find some of the highlights below.

Janette Gilman
President
Montgomery County Council of PTAs

Business Accomplished
Two critical resolutions were introduced at the meeting: the draft MCCPTA Operating Budget priorities resolution and the draft MCCPTA CIP Budget priorities resolution; these are posted at www.mccpta.com under the Issues tab for PT(S)As to review ahead of next month's Delegates Assembly meeting on Tuesday October 23 at 7:30 PM at Carver.  Please note that the Curriculum and Gifted Child committees will be offering an amendment to include language on acceleration into the Operating Budget priorities consistent with MCCPTA positions; the author apologized for the unintended oversight.

We passed standing rules at the meeting and now have agreed upon guidelines for our meetings. MCCPTA Past President Kristin Trible gave new and returning delegates an informative DA 101 lesson, discussing the expectations, impact, and procedures of this MCCPTA body.

Other highlights of information shared included the MCPS push--and MCCPTA cooperation--on edible gardens for ALL schools, the key state and federal legislative issues PTAs should be monitoring, the need for PTA leaders to let their Montgomery County Council members and staffs know NOW if they are behind equity in technology and the Board of Education-approved initiative to put Promethean boards in all elementary classrooms and wireless access in all schools by the opening of the 2013-2014 school year, and the soon to be had launch of www.mccpta.org, our new web presence!
Membership Awards Presented
We announced the over 100 Montgomery County PTAs and PTSAs who were recognized by Maryland PTA AND MCCPTA for membership achievement in 2011-2012. Schools present picked up their certificates and plaques. The awards not distributed at the meeting will be given to cluster coordinators or area vice presidents a the upcoming MCCPTA Board of Directors meeting this Thursday October 4.

In addition, John T. Baker Middle School PTA, winner of our Facebook challenge for being the first PTA in Montgomery County to send in dues to MCCPTA, received a free subscription to Social Scout, a partner of National PTA, and gift cards from Silver Diner-Rockville, a proud sponsor of MCCPTA.
