Retention of lean mass in weight loss Weight loss is often accompanied by the undesirable loss of fat free (lean muscle) mass (FFM). Diets with high dietary protein intake may provide additional benefits through preservation of FFM compared to a standard protein diet. However, the precise mechanism by which a high protein diet may alleviate weight loss induced reductions in FFM has not been fully elucidated. This study evaluated the effect of increased dietary protein intake and calorie restricted diets on genes involved in skeletal muscle protein synthesis and breakdown. The authors propose that the key mechanism in FFM retention with weight loss and high protein diets may involve the suppression of the protein degradation pathway to prevent muscle atrophy.
Satiation, satiety and the control of food intake Satiation and satiety play fundamental roles in appetite control and both affect the inhibition of eating. This review article presents the definitions of satiation and satiety, along with the experimental approaches that have been used to measure them in scientific studies of human appetite. The authors address the importance of reward homeostasis, which can help prevent eating in the absence of hunger, for the control of intake.
How doctor empathy affects care What is your empathy score? Researchers from Italy sought to determine if physician empathy is associated with clinical outcomes for patients with diabetes. They used questionnaires to measure the doctor's understanding of the patient's experiences, concerns and perspectives, as well as the ability to communicate this understanding to the patient. They found that patients with type 2 diabetes are likely to have better health outcomes if they have a doctor who shows high levels of empathy. |

CNN Hero to speak at ASBP symposium in Orlando
ASBP is pleased to host Linda Fondren, one of CNN's Heroes, on Sunday, Oct. 28, for her lecture, Coming Together: Fighting Obesity on a Community Level. Many practitioners find it challenging to increase motivation and take action on the issue of healthy eating and physical fitness on a community level. This presentation will discuss ways to create lasting health improvements in the community through care of individual patients, partnerships and efforts with other entities and raise awareness regarding the dangers of obesity and related diseases. The lecture is part of the ASBP Obesity Course (Oct. 26-28) at The Peabody Orlando (Fla.). Please review either your printed preliminary program or download an e-copy for complete details. Also, you can click here to read more about the entire ASBP Obesity & Associated Conditions Symposium, registration details and hotel reservations. Please note that the ASBP room block at The Peabody Orlando is already sold out on some nights; therefore, please call ASBP if you need additional hotel recommendations. |

IOM's Fitness Measures and Health Outcomes in Youth report offers recommendations
Techniques ranging from running to push-ups to sit-and-reach tests have been used to measure various aspects of fitness in children and adults. However, evidence is sparse on how well some of these techniques correspond to desired health outcomes in children, fueling debate about the best fitness measures for youth. A committee convened by the Institute of Medicine undertook a comprehensive review of the science and found that it supports the use of specific ways to measure three of these components -- cardiorespiratory endurance, body composition and musculoskeletal fitness -- in young people. These measurements should be used in national youth fitness surveys and school-based fitness tests, says the committee's report. A pre-publication PDF of Fitness Measures and Health Outcomes in Youth is available online as a free download from the National Academies Press. The report was sponsored by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. |
