ASBP leader provides physical activity session at IASO SCOPE
On Sept. 1, ASBP Vice President Dr. Deborah Bade Horn (Houston) taught a session during the Specialist Certification in Obesity Professional Education (SCOPE) Summer School in Cambridge, England. SCOPE is the official obesity education program of the International Association for the Study of Obesity (IASO). During the session, Dr. Horn taught the basics of patient-centered physical activity, which will be featured in an IASO learning module (click here to preview online). Dr. Horn will offer a similar educational session on Friday, Oct. 26, during the ASBP Obesity Course in Orlando, Fla.
Institute of Medicine offers poster, Obesity: Complex But Conquerable
The Institute of Medicine's poster, Obesity: Complex But Conquerable, illustrates the recommendations from the recent report, Accelerating Progress in Obesity Prevention: Solving the Weight of the Nation. This poster (12-3/8" x 37-1/8") depicts both the magnitude of the obesity problem in the United States and the effect on health and the economy. Highlighted on the poster are five essential areas in need of improvement: physical activity, food and beverages, marketing, health care and workplace, and schools. Physicians and clinicians may find it useful to display the poster in exam rooms for patient education. Posters can be ordered online for $1.00+shipping/pack of 10 (available in English or Spanish).

This study illuminates the lack of physician and individual diagnosis of overweight and the need for treatment of obesity. The trends observed over time call attention to the scarcity in the care of obesity in the United States and provide evidence for physicians, individuals and policymakers to address the deficiencies in the diagnosis and treatment of obesity in the primary care setting and elsewhere.
Beverage vs. solid fruits and vegetables: Effects on energy intake and body weight Recent studies about the impact of energy-yielding beverages on body weight are conflicting. This study examined energy-matched beverage or solid forms of fruits and vegetables on changes in body weight. The data from this randomized controlled trial strongly suggest energy-containing beverages promote positive energy balance and weight gain, especially for overweight and obese individuals.
Obesity at diagnosis is associated with inferior outcomes in hormone receptor-positive operable breast cancer Obesity has been associated with poorer outcomes in operable breast cancer, but the relationship between obesity and outcomes by breast cancer subtype has not been previously evaluated. This study compared the outcomes of obese patients with others in a large cohort of women with stage I to III breast cancer who participated in three National Cancer Institute-sponsored trials evaluating the role of chemotherapy or endocrine therapy regimens. |
