Obesity drug outcome measures consensus report released
On Aug. 14, The George Washington University School of Public Health and Health Services released Obesity Drug Outcome Measures: A consensus report of considerations regarding pharmacologic intervention. The project that the report resulted from explored the pressing issues and challenges surrounding U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) approval and appropriate use of drugs to treat obesity. A group of diverse stakeholders, the Obesity Drugs Outcome Measures Dialogue Group, met several times from November 2011 to July 2012 to identify the key issues surrounding the evaluation of pharmaceutical interventions for the treatment of obesity. The fundamental points that emerged during the group's discussions considered these topics:
- Understanding obesity
- Appropriately characterizing the population
- The need for additional treatment options for obesity
- Limiting risk of medically inappropriate or unsafe use of obesity drugs
- Limitations of the current FDA approval process
- Special considerations for pediatric patients with obesity

Obesity Update: Study reviews effects of hypocaloric diets with sucrose or high fructose corn syrup on weight loss
The replacement of sucrose with high fructose corn syrup in food products has been suggested as playing a role in the development of obesity as a public health issue. A randomized, prospective, double-blind trial, with overweight/obese participants measured the effect of four equally hypocaloric diets containing different levels of sucrose or high fructose corn syrup. The researchers measured changes in body composition and blood chemistry before and after the completion of 12 weeks following the diets. To read the entire article, click here.
