With the Food & Drug Administration's approval of Qsymia (phentermine and topiramate extended-release) capsules on July 17, the drug manufacturer, VIVUS, Inc., released the new drug's label, which is available for you to download and read. Qsymia is available through a limited program under the Risk Evaluation and Mitigation Strategy (REMS). Only certified pharmacies may distribute Qsymia. Please visit www.qsymiaREMS.com for more information. (NOTE: The aforementioned website includes a link to information about the Healthcare Provider Training Program.) For more information about the drug's approval, please read the joint ASBP-American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery news release as well as the FDA's official press announcement. Want to learn more? The ASBP Obesity & Associated Conditions Symposium on Oct. 24-28 in Orlando will provide education on the use of Qsymia, Belviq and Contrave. Advocacy
ASBP among five organizations requesting CMS to remove non-coverage designation for LSG
Following the June 27 decision by Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) on coverage for the Laparoscopic Sleeve Gastrectomy (LSG), ASBP joined the American Society for Metabolic and Bariatric Surgery, the Michigan Bariatric Surgery Collaborative, the Society for Advanced Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Surgery and The Obesity Society in signing a letter requesting that in order for CMS regional administrators to have the flexibility to decide on coverage for LSG, the governmental agency remove its current Non-Coverage Designation "(N)" for LSG. Without removal of the "(N)" designation, regional administrators may not be able to fully evaluate and provide LSG for Medicare beneficiaries in need, which conflicts with the agency's decision to allow local administrators to determine coverage. Click here to download and read the letter.
ASBP signs request for a U.S. surgeon general's report on sugary drink consumption
ASBP recently showed support of a written request to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) that urged preparation of a surgeon general's report on the health effects of sugary drink consumption. The final letter, signed by more than 100 organizations and some two dozen prominent health authorities, went to HHS Secretary Kathleen Sebelius and Surgeon General Regina Benjamin on July 19. ASBP will update members on any result of this letter. |
