News
ASBP announces new partnership with Obesity Action C oalition
ASBP is excited to announce its recent membership partnership with the Obesity Action Coalition (OAC). In the past, ASBP supported OAC as an affiliated obesity organization. This year, the society's leadership decided to become a part of the OAC Chairman's Council and provide OAC membership as new benefit of membership in ASBP. ASBP is excited to join with organizations that, together, can create a stronger voice for obesity. OAC is the most powerful voice fighting for the individual affected by obesity -- a voice made up of more than 34,500 individuals and professionals. OAC tackles important issues that impact the individual affected by obesity and fights to improve access to obesity treatments and ending weight bias and discrimination. Each ASBP member will receive confirmation of the OAC membership upon the next ASBP membership renewal date. Download an informational flier about the benefits of OAC membership.
ASBP leadership attends 19th European Congress on Obesity

President David Bryman, D.O.; Executive Director Laurie Traetow, CPA; and Health Director Stacy Schmidt, Ph.D., attended the 19th European Congress on Obesity (ECO 2012) hosted by the European Association for the Study of Obesity (EASO) from May 9-12 in Lyon, France. ASBP's International Committee is focused on learning more about the current differences in clinical obesity practice throughout the world. In addition to representing the society both by attending obesity education sessions and exhibiting, ASBP also presented a poster describing preliminary results of the ASBP 2012 Prescribing Practices Survey. This poster reported on the current use of pharmacotherapy among obesity medicine specialists. If you have not already taken the survey, please do so today! Your feedback is extremely valuable to the field of obesity medicine. |
Advocacy
ASBP represented at May 10 FDA EMDAC hearing on lorcaserin
Following a hearing on May 10, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration (FDA) Endocrinologic and Metabolic Drugs Advisory Committe (EMDAC) voted 18-4 with one abstention to recommend lorcaserin, manufactured by Arena Pharmaceuticals, Inc., for approval by the FDA. Members can view a 7-minute video of comments from ASBP physician Denise Bruner, M.D., F.A.S.B.P., who represented the society through an oral presentation at the hearing. ASBP submitted a letter of support for approval of lorcaserin that also was reviewed by the advisory committee. The FDA is expected to announce its final decision about whether to approve lorcaserin by Wednesday, June 27. ASBP is at the forefront of the effort to reaffirm members' interest in new obesity drugs and will continue to keep members updated on the status of the FDA's decision.
ASBP announces federal advocacy program
During the April 2012 ASBP Board of Trustees meeting, the board voted to begin focusing on national advocacy efforts. Board members also approved hiring an advocacy advisor in Washington, D.C., who will assist with building the society's advocacy program. In addition, the board approved the formation and composition of an ASBP Advocacy Committee to assist in formulating a robust federal advocacy agenda. The advocacy committee is comprised of Dr. Brian Sabowitz (chairperson), ASBP Executive Director Laurie Traetow, Dr. Deborah Bade Horn, Dr. Wendy Scinta and Dr. Eric Westman. Resources
Affordable video production and marketing toolkit package available to members attending ASBP conference in Orlando
ASBP members often ask for advice about how to market their obesity medicine practices to patients. In response, ASBP is now offering members an affordable solution with a video production and marketing toolkit package. The society negotiated this production package with aKvideo, Inc., (Castle Rock, Colo.) at a cost of $800 per video package, which includes a sample script outline/questions, tips for marketing online, filming, editing and both a DVD and web-ready version of the final video. Watch a sample video from aKvideo, which was filmed for ASBP member Dr. Jeffry N. Gerber. Recording of all videos will take place during the ASBP 62nd Annual Obesity & Associated Conditions Symposium in Orlando. If you are interested in learning more about the services, please click here.
ASBP announces social bookmarking group for members
During the past few months, ASBP staff began collecting and tagging articles related to obesity medicine. This collection of nearly 100 articles is saved as the members-only group "Obesity Medicine in the News" on www.diigo.com. ASBP members may create a free account, then request to join the group. Upon confirmation of a new account, a user may choose whether or not to install the Diigo toolbar or simply add Diigolet as a drag-and-drop bookmark on one's browser. Either the toolbar or the bookmark will allow access to the highlight, sticky note and tagging features when bookmarking a new article or commenting on an existing one in the article repository. (NOTE: Users may choose whether to share their comments with the group or display them in only a personal view setting.) Read more about Diigo:
