Old Tom

Last month Menlo Park Firefighters took our antique fire apparatus "Old Tom" to an event. While at the event it was noted that the clutch on our beloved 1935 Seagrave was slipping excessively. After the event we took "Old Tom" to Gabe at Peninsula Trucking of Redwood City, who has been performing our regular service on the apparatus for years. When Gabe had his crew take apart "Old Tom" he found that the throw-out bearing had failed, the clutch was disintegrated and that the pressure plate was severely damaged.

Due to the fact that "Old Tom" is 77 years old the parts are not easily found and eventually Gabe turned to B&A Friction Material of San Jose who was able to repair and reconstruct the clutch assembly from vintage parts and get the repaired assembly back to Gabe at Peninsula Trucking this morning. Knowing about the Easter Egg Hunt this weekend, Gabe has pulled his mechanics off of other jobs this afternoon to ensure that "Old Tom" is ready for delivering the Easter Bunny to the Egg Hunt on Saturday and is safe for the endless loads of children that will be given rides on "Old Tom" around Burgess Park during the event. Even Firefighters have heroes and today Gabe and his crew at Peninsula Trucking as well at the crew at B&A Friction are ours.

The motto of the Menlo Park Firefighters Association is "Our Family Helping your Family."  If you have an idea on how we can do that please contact us.

Sincerely,

Thank You for Halting the Fire Chief's Plans

Last January our Fire Chief outlined a plan to the County Board of Supervisors to close Menlo Park Fire Stations 1 and 5 and relocate them to Flood Park.  As Firefighters, we were just as surprised as a majority of our Fire Board to read about it in the paper.  When concerned citizens wrote emails and came to the Fire District Board Meeting to voice concerns against the idea, our Chief was forced to issue a statement that there is no plan to close Menlo Park Fire Stations 1 and 5 and relocate them to Flood Park.  Menlo Park Firefighters would like to thank every citizen who was an advocate on this matter, you truly made a difference in public's safety.

2012 Relay for Life

August 4th-5th

Menlo Park Firefighters are proud to announce our continued support for the American Cancer Society's "Relay for Life" in Menlo Park. "Relay for Life" is a life-changing event that gives everyone in communities across the globe a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease. This year Menlo Park Firefighters will be cooking dinner for the participants of the relay like we have in years past and we hope that others join in the fight against cancer as well by forming relay teams for the event.

Because cancer never sleeps, relays are overnight events that are up to 24 hours in length. Relayers do not have to walk all night, but each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event. This year in Menlo Park the "Relay for Life" will be held at Burgess Park, located at 701 Laurel Street. The event will start on August 4th at 10:00am and continue until August 5th at 10:00am. For more information about Menlo Park's Relay for Life, please go to their website at www.RelayForLife.org/MenloParkCA  or contact the event coordinator at

SAFETY TIP OF THE MONTH: Plan your Escape

In 2007, there were an estimated 362,500 reported home structure fires and 2,565 associated civilian deaths in the United States.

Fire can spread rapidly through your home, leaving you as little as two minutes to escape safely once the alarm sounds. Your ability to get out depends on advance warning from smoke alarms, and advance planning.  To make a plan:

  1.  Draw a home escape plan and discuss it with everyone in your household.
  2.  Practice the plan night and day with everyone in your home twice a year.
  3. If you have second story bedrooms, consider buying escape ladders for the exterior bedroom windows.

Do you or someone you know have a story that you would be willing to share on camera relating to positive experiences that you have had with Menlo Park Firefighters? If so please contact us at MenloParkFirefighters@Gmail.com.
