GeoMAPP Welcomes
Applied Geographics, Inc. and AECOM to Provide Business Planning Consulting Services |
On August 17, 2011, the GeoMAPP team officially welcomed Applied Geographics, Inc. and AECOM to the project to assist in developing geoarchiving business planning tools to support the digtial preservation of geospatial data. Applied Geographics, Inc. will be working with the GeoMAPP team to create deliverables consisting of informational documents, guidelines, and templates suitable for developing a comprehensive business plan for digtial geospatial preservation. The new business planning tools will be publicly available in early December through the GeoMAPP website's Publications & Tools online library. |

Check out the GeoMAPP web site for new tools and presentations including the new: Archival Metadata Elements for the Preservation of Geospatial Datasets.
We recently re-organized several of the pages of the GeoMAPP website to make it easier to find presentations and tools that may be of interest. You'll now find categorical and chronological views for the Presentations and Publications pages, so you can browse based on a particular conference or geospatial archiving topic, or based on when a particular presentation or paper was published. You'll also find past Informational Partner presentations available on the Informational Partners page.

Please join the GeoMAPP team as we host the next in our series of Informational Partner meetings on Thursday, Oct 6. We will be exploring processes and considerations when processing and preparing geospatial datasets for archival preservation and access. The suggested process is based on the Open Archival Information System (OAIS) model, and offers practical guidance, steps, and tasks for preparing your geospatial datasets for both archival storage and access.

The GeoMAPP team plans to host one more Informational Partner meeting on December 8, so mark your calendar and join us as we introduce our latest tools, discuss and reflect upon the GeoMAPP project, and explore lessons learned and what's next for geospatial archiving. |

NSGIC 2011 Annual Conference
LOCATION: Boise, ID (9/26-9/29) |
Joe Sewash, from the North Carolina Center for Geographic Information & Analysis, will be leading a presentation and discussion at the National States Geographic Information Council 2011 annual conference, along with Evan Hammer and Stu Kirkpatrick from the Montana State Library, on Wednesday evening (9/28) from 8:00-9:00 pm. They will provide an overview of the GeoMAPP project and recap the project's accomplishments to date, followed by an interactive discussion on geoarchiving.

Best Practices Exchange (BPE), 2011
LOCATION: Lexington, KY (10/20-10/22) |
Representatives of the GeoMAPP team will be contributing to the discussion on digital preservation at the Best Practices Exchange, 2011. The conference tracks include Access, Sustainability, Digital Projects, and Collaboration and Community, and are structured as a brief presentation followed by an interactive discussion with the session attendees. GeoMAPP participants will be on hand in several of the tracks discussing tools developed to enable geoarchiving as well as lessons learned and next steps. |

Society of American Archivists Annual Meeting
LOCATION: Chicago, IL (8/21-8/26) |
Several members of the GeoMAPP team attended the Society of American Archivists Annual Meeting. While GeoMAPP was not an official presenter, GeoMAPP's Butch Lazorchak, Digital Archivist with the Library of Congress, moderated an engaging panel on Geospatial Preservation: The State of the Landscape, that included participation from North Carolina State University's Steve Morris (also a GeoMAPP participant), John L. Faundeen, Archivist at the US Geological Survey's Earth Resources Observation and Science Center, and Andrew Turner, Chief Technical Officer with GeoIQ. |
