 | Preservation and Data Transfer: New Geospatial Metadata Whitepaper |
GeoMAPP partners just published a new white paper on Utilizing Geospatial Metadata to Support Data Preservation Practices.
Excerpt:
Metadata associated with geospatial datasets can provide a rich insight into the technical details about the dataset it is describing while also providing information about the 'who', 'what', 'when', 'where', 'why', and 'how' to explain the dataset's purpose and utility. When thoughtfully populated, geospatial metadata can be a critical resource for understanding and managing geospatial data for current and future GIS practitioners and those trying to preserve the data.
This whitepaper offers a brief introduction to geospatial metadata based on the Federal Geographic Data Committee (FGDC) Content Standard for Digtial Geospatial Metadata (CDSDGM) - FGDC-STD-001-1998. While fully compliant, richly completed full geospatial metadata records should always be the preferred standard for geospatial data creators, the white paper also includes a checklist of metadata fields that deserve special focus to be thoughtfully populated to beneft GIS data access, use, and preservation.
This whitepaper will be of interest to geospatial practitioners creating geospatial datasets, and archivists involved in the preservation of geospatial datasets. |
