Dear Friend,

We hope you are having a wonderful summer! Things have been joyfully busy at Lake County Cares.  The number of people we are connecting with opportunities to serve has never been greater. How patriotic is that ?!  Enjoy this issue and please take a look at our Summer of Service brochure for volunteer needs in Lake County.

Cause and Effect
Summer HUGS Program

Thank you to the Lake Buff baseball teams and LF/LB residents who recently went to bat for hungry kids in Lake County.  Through our Summer HUGS food drive, volunteers collected more than 200 boxes and bags of food and drinks to benefit children served by the Holy Family Food Pantry in Waukegan.

As a result of their efforts, enough food to supply the pantry's weekend backpack program for the ENTIRE summer was collected and distributed.   More than 160 children will receive a backpack on Thursdays filled with breakfast and lunch for the next three days. The kids can then bring their backpack to be refilled the following Thursday.

When we stopped by the pantry last week, 150 kids were enjoying the free lunch, playing games and doing art projects.  Several Lake Forest High School students were there volunteering. It was very rewarding to see everyone and know that these children will not go hungry this summer thanks to the many generous donations.  We hope that Lake County Cares can make this an annual partnership between local baseball teams, residents and pantries.

Our kindergarten-readiness pilot program kicked off on June 20 and will be going strong through July 29th at Oak Terrace Elementary School in Highwood.  Designed by LCC Board Member, Kim Carden, and Cindy Bean, licensed occupational therapists, "Se Fuerte! Be Strong for Kindergarten." works to improve children's fine and gross motor skills.  Twenty two pre-kindergartners are participating in the program (they were screened for fine motor deficiencies in April) and more than 30 volunteers are assisting on M,W, or F from 12:30-2:30 p.m.  If you are interested in volunteering email info@lakecountycares.org   To see more of the children and volunteers in action click here
