Dear Friend,

This summer we hope not only for many days of sunshine, but also to make days brighter for others. With that in mind, this June Newsletter is brimming with opportunities to serve! 

 

Social service agencies around Lake County need your help this Summer. The following volunteer opportunities have been researched and confirmed by Lake County Cares. Please take a look and see what piques your interest!

Summer of Service
Boys and Girls Club of Lake County - bgclc.com

The Boys & Girls Club of Lake County will be operating a summer program for children and youth ages 6-18 at three locations in Waukegan, IL. The Keller Unit, 450 Keller Ave., the Genesee Unit, 724 S. Genesee and the Teen Center, 730 S. Martin Luther King, Jr. Drive (immediately across from the Genesee site) will be operating summer programming Monday through Friday.

Camp hours are Monday-Friday from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. beginning on Monday, June 13th and ending on Friday, August 12th. Volunteer needs for the summer include helping with reading, math and other academic components, assisting with art, photography, video and computer projects, playing games and assisting with sports programs. Before volunteering, an application and volunteer orientation must be completed.

Career Resource Center -CareerResourceCenter.org

Administrative/Clerical

Like a variety of tasks and a fast paced office? Assist with correspon- dence, data tracking, mailings, publicity, posting to on-line sites, tracking of outreach opportunities, maintaining bulletin boards - plus more. Time commitment: half day each week or more

Member Services/Reception

For this volunteer opportunity, all you need is a welcoming smile and genuine interest in people! As the first contact for all visitors, you will in- teract with a diverse group of talented professionals, providing the "human touch" that earns us high marks from our members. You will also answer the phones, schedule appointments and perform light office tasks. Time commitment: 3 and a half hour weekly or fill in as needed. Media/PR Associate Assist with getting media and PR information out the door to local publica- tions. Help share press releases, human interest stories and newsletters with local media to help raise awareness about the Career Resource Center and the opportunities that our center has to offer. Time commit- ment: Flexible, project based, typically 4 hours per month

ˇ Help deliver furniture to needy families - Thursday mornings in Waukegan

ˇ Provide childcare and/or arts and crafts for children of recovering Moms. Wednesday and Thursday, 6 to 8 p.m. in our shelter in Gurnee; and Monday through Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m. at Samaritan House in North Chicago

ˇ Help prepare, serve and clean up after congregate meal at Senior Center: Monday through Friday, 11a.m. to 1p.m., Grayslake

ˇ Deliver Meals on Wheels to homebound seniors, Monday through Friday, 10:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m.

ˇ Perform administrative tasks, Monday through Friday in Waukegan.

The Center for Enriched Living - centerforenrichedliving.org

The Center for Enriched Living is a non-residential, social enrichment and skill-development center dedicated to serving people with intellectual or developmental disabilities. We exist so that people with developmental disabilities can be fully included in the community, achieve personal success, and enjoy a good quality of life.

The Center offers programs for people of all ages and focuses on acquiring new skills and socializing with peers. Plus, our members are directly involved in creating and planning their programs. Activities offered include: arts & crafts, drama, music, bowling, fitness, nutrition, gardening, cooking, and community outings.

Volunteers interact directly with our members and participate in activities under the guidance and supervision of Program Staff.

Summer Opportunities

We hold a Summer Adventure Camp for teens and young adults Monday - Friday, June 13th - July 29th. Each day we have 2 volunteer shifts: 9 a.m.-1 p.m. and 1p.m.-5 p.m. Volunteers are required to commit to at least one shift per week for the entire session (same day and time slot each week).

Additionally, we have programs for adults Monday - Friday in the evenings (times vary). This session runs June 13th - August 12th. Volunteers are asked to commit to attending one program on a weekly basis (same day and time slot each week). Location: 280 Saunders Road, Riverwoods, IL 60015

Transitional Housing Volunteers

Volunteers needed to help clean housing units before new families move in. Help needed to help move out items, cleaning, painting, etc.

Pantry Volunteers

There are two ways to help at the pantry. Assist staff with sorting, stocking, packaging, and distributing food to pantry visitors. 4 hour shift during open pantry hours. Other volunteers are needed to assist staff with unloading truck, moving boxes, and general support of large pick-ups and deliveries. Heavy lifting required. Time commitment: 2-3 hours on Monday mornings.

Volunteers needed for the 57th Annual Art Fair on the Square, Labor Day weekend.

Volunteers will be assigned tasks based on their preference and availability. Students will receive documentation for service hour credit.

Sunday, Sept. 4th

ˇ Check-in artists starting at 4 a.m. (shifts begin promptly at 4 a.m. and are 2 hour shifts: 4-6 a.m., 6-8 a.m., 8-10 a.m.);

ˇ Help artists with set-up and start the show (shifts from 10 a.m.-noon); ˇ General volunteer tasks in 2 hour shifts from noon-6 p.m.

Monday, Sept. 5th

ˇ Set-up and help with the Artist Breakfast at Gorton Community Center, approx. 7-10 a.m.;

ˇ General volunteer tasks in 2 hour shifts from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., or from 10 a.m. until 8 p.m. to include teardown.

General volunteer tasks include traffic control, manning the information tent, distributing water, managing the Children's Art Corner, "booth sitting" for artists, and assisting with teardown on Monday.

The Garden at ELAWA Farm - elawafarmgarden.org

Join us in the restoration of this fabulous 2.2 acre garden overlooking 600 acres of nature preserve in the Middlefork Savanna. Learn how to grow a wide variety of vegetables, herbs and cutting flowers, how to create compost and how to prepare raised beds. The work is outside and healthy (we do not use herbicides or pesticides). Bring water, a hat and sun block. Volunteers are needed for two shifts Monday through Friday, 9:00 am to noon and 1:30 to 4:30 pm.

GLASA (Great Lakes Adaptive Sports Association) - glasa.org

GLASA provides recreational and competitive sport programs for youth and adults who have a primary physical or visual impairment. We rely on the generosity of our volunteers to help make the programs as successful as they have been! Volunteers needed for:

Weekly programs and special events such as Golf, Tennis, Swimming, Track & Field, Basketball Camp, Tennis Camp, Water Skiing Days, and Cycling Days!

Annual 5K Twilight Run

Saturday, September 10th at the Gorton Community Center, Lake Forest. Volunteers needed for various duties; including set-up, registration, on- course safety, finish line, concessions and clean-up.

Join our Summer Restoration Crew! Work outdoors helping nature to be at its healthiest. Meet at the Heller Nature Center at 8:30 am Monday through Friday from June through July to cut buckthorn, count rare plants, clean up at the beach, and have fun with our great team.

(No work days in August.)

Holy Family Food Pantry - holyfamilyfoodpantry.org

Join our summer lunch program for local community children June 13th through August 11th. Volunteers are needed Monday and Thursday from 10:30 a.m. to 1pm at Holy Family Food Pantry, located at 912 8th Street in Waukegan. This volunteer activity will include setting up and taking down the tables and chairs for lunch. Students will also help with supervision at meal time. Sports activities and arts and crafts will also be included in the program. All volunteers under the age of 18 may

receive a free lunch.

Kids Korner

Help provide a safe and enjoyable experience for kids ages 2-12 in the waiting area at Lake County Courthouse by reading to them or playing with them while their parents are conducting court business. This program only operates during the day, but is a great summer opportunity for students who can commit to at least 4 hours twice a month. Some cleaning of toys may also be required. Open Monday - Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. and 1:15 p.m. to 5 p.m. Volunteers may work a morning or afternoon shift, or stay for the entire day.

Lake County Cares Summer Intern

We are looking for an intern/volunteer team to work on an information- gathering mission over the summer. This project will result in creating Lake County's most comprehensive volunteer opportunity database. It will be a great chance to collaborate, meet new people, work on a limited time project and/or hone office, computer, interviewing and phone skills. Reference letter will be provided at conclusion of the internship.

Beginning Date: Monday, June 6, End Date: Wednesday, August 17 Time Required: 4-8 hours/week. Mondays and Wednesdays, preferred- a.m. or p.m.

Lake County Cares: Se Fuerte! Be Strong for Kindergarten

Volunteers needed for a new, kindergarten-readiness summer program Lake County Cares is piloting at Oak Terrace Elementary School in Highwood, IL. Several of the children attending will be from Spanish- speaking homes. Volunteers help with improving the children's fine motor skills (handwriting, cutting with scissors, buttoning coats, tying shoes, etc) and gross motor skills (jumping, running, catching, etc.). Spanish is helpful but not required.

Lake County Forest Preserve - lcfpd.org

The Native Seed Nursery of Lake County Forest Preserve District is interested in volunteers to help with weeding, mulching, and seed collecting on Tuesday & Wednesday afternoons from noon-3pm. Tools and gloves will be provided. Don't forget to dress for the weather, wear closed-toed shoes, and use plenty of sunscreen. The Nursery is located at Rollins Savanna Forest Preserve in Grayslake. The Lake Forest-Lake Bluff Historical Society - lflbhistory.org

Volunteer needed to scan photographs from Historical Society image collection. Tasks include: Scanning photographs, adding them to a searchable museum collections database, and writing brief summaries of photograph contents.

Volunteer needed to organize Historical Society research files and to photocopy a newspaper index. Tasks include photocopying, sorting, labeling, filing and entering categories into a computer database. Hours: Tuesday-Friday, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Dates: Open-ended commitment.

Are you interested in volunteering outdoors and learning about our local natural ecosystem? Come and volunteer this summer with Lake Forest Open Lands Association in our nature preserves. Volunteers will work alongside our Land Management staff helping with a variety of different jobs including invasive species removal, wood chipping and possibly monitoring plants and animals.

Make a positive difference in a young child's life and let's make this summer fun! Nuestro Center is looking for summer camp counselors for our Nuestro Verano Summer Camp 2011!

Responsible camp counselors, sophomore in high school or above, are needed to help run daily activities and sports for children between 1st and 8th grades. There will be arts and craft projects and occasional field trips.

Volunteers Requirements and Information: ˇ Meeting time 12-4pm at Everts Park in Highwood (120 North Ave) ˇ 2 days per week (dates to be determined) ˇ Must be a sophomore in high school or older. Adults welcomed. .

PADS Crisis Services, Inc. - lakecountypads.org

PADS does not have a need for any Hands-on volunteers this summer, but is seeking food donations for its Summer Breakfast Program. We are asking donors to bring cold cereal in individual boxes, milk that does not need refrigeration (white and chocolate), fruit cups with spoons, granola bars, cheese or peanut butter crackers, yogurt, cottage cheese, Ritz-style crackers (for the many, many jars of peanut butter we already have), bottled water, and juice boxes for clients who use our Assessment Center during the day. We anticipate having about 40 clients per day.

Once these items have been collected they can be delivered to the Assessment Center in North Chicago (3001 Green Bay Road, Building #5). The office is open 7 a.m.-7 p.m., 7 days a week.

Adopt-a-Grandparent this Summer

Many seniors are not fortunate enough to have children or grandchildren in their lives. Our Adopt-a-Grandparent program pairs teens with

local seniors who are in need of social support. Teens & seniors play games together, enjoy ice cream, listen to concerts and participate in other organized activities. Adopting a grandparent this summer will make a real difference in a senior's life.This opportunity takes place at Whitehall Nursing Home, Deerfield. The time commitment is 2hours per week, but multiple days are available if desired.

Computer TA

Do you want to help people in a struggling neighborhood? Change lives this summer! We are looking for recent high school graduates or current high school seniors and juniors to provide assistance to computer class instructor teaching basic and intermediate computer skills. Volunteers must be proficient with computers and computer program usage.

Food Pantry Assistance

Every week, UMMA feeds hungry people in Lake County through their Food pantry. We are always looking for volunteers on Tuesdays and Thursdays to bag and hand out food to our clients. Volunteers must be at least 16 years of age.
