Message from Pastor Pete

This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us. And we ought to lay down our lives for one another. If any one of you has material possessions and sees a brother or sister in need but has no pity on them, how can the love of God be in you? Dear children, let us not love with words or tongue but with actions and in truth.

1 John 3:16-18

The red kettles of the Salvation Army have become a part of Christmas tradition here in America.   It seems like every store has a smiling bell ringer clanging away, encouraging people to generosity.

On Saturday Shannon and I had the chance to ring those bells at Wal-Mart in Rochester. For an hour we chimed away, humming and ringing to the beat of all kinds of classics (we found that Jingle Bells worked best...but we could also jingle out the beat to the Minnesota Rouser!)

People streamed past us on their way to their serious Christmas shopping. They pushed carts piled with toys & goodies for young and old. Despite all the talk of recession and tough times, people still came to Wal-Mart to shop.

As the hour jingled past, money continually poured into the kettle. Parents taught their kids the importance of generosity, encouraging them to reach up and put money in the open hole. People on their way out the door tossed in the change that the cashier had just given them. Others went out of their way to fold larger bills and stuff them into the kettle.

Generosity ran rampant. While people came to Wal-Mart to buy presents for their families and loved ones, they didn't forget those in need. They gave money to feed the hungry and house the homeless. As the bell clanged in my ear I felt a sense of accomplishment and pride. I was part of something special. Those dollars and coins make a difference in many people's lives. Shannon and I helped encourage that.

Salvation Army bell ringing is a wonderful thing, yet as I drove home something troubled me...I did not come in contact with the people I hoped to help. The homeless and hungry remained nameless and faceless. I had the freedom to hop in my car, do some good, get a little shopping done on the side, and drive home.  I dabbled in helping people in need ... but did it from an arm's length.

I feel that I am, by nature, a generous person. I give money to Lutheran World Relief. I support a congregation that supports places like the Salvation Army Dental Clinic, Rochester Women's Shelter, and the Channel One food bank.  I take part in the Cardboard Box City where I experience what it's like to sleep in the cold. I try to make a difference in the world...but I live in a bubble. I live my happy middle class life in my warm house with my warm clothes and good food. I rarely have actual contact with the people in need. I can help them without being inconvenienced. I don't have to feel uncomfortable with actual personal interaction with people who are struggling in life.

Is that what it means 'see a brother or a sister in need?' Do I actually see them or do I know in theory that they exist and that something should be done to help?

Does anyone else struggle with this?

Families Growing in Faith

On Sunday, December 11th Peace will have a shortened worship service to allow some important time for us to sit and talk about how we help people grow in faith. Karen Gieseke of the synod office will come and lead us in this significant conversation. Everything is on the table for conversation: Sunday School, youth ministry, adult education. It's time to discern how God calls us to help ALL people grow in faith. Please plan to be a part of the conversation. 'Family' can be defined in many ways...and includes single people and empty nesters!

Holiday Worship Poinsettias

Once again, poinsettias will add to the beauty of our holiday worship. Poinsettias will be ordered from Robin's Floral and Design. The flowers are $14.99, colors include red, pink and white. Please inquire about more unique colors such as blue with sparkles (contact Myra Wick). Flowers will be ordered on December 12, so that we will have them for the Children's Christmas Program on the 18th. You may take your poinsettia home after the Christmas Eve Service.  Please contact Myra Wick or Linda Sheppard (office@peaceeyota.org) if you are interested in ordering a poinsettia.

Christmas Program

The Youth Christmas Program will be held on Sunday, December 18th following a brief worship service. Please let the church office know if you can bring cookies for the fun afterwards!

Wrapping Party

If you are able to stay for a bit after the Christmas Program on December 18th we will be wrapping the gifts for the family we have adopted.  Wrapping paper and tape will be provided.

Adopt a Family

Peace Lutheran will be adopting a family or two for Christmas. The purpose is to provide Christmas gifts for a family in need. A list of items will be made available for those interested in contributing. Items can be placed in the gathering area under the Christmas tree. Please tape the receipt to the package. We will receive reimbursement for Thrivent for $200.00. This reimbursement will allow us to purchase additional items.

Peace Adopts a Family

Again this year we have the opportunity to help provide Christmas for a family in our community who are struggling this Christmas season. The family lives within the DE school district and the children attend DE schools. Mom is a single mom of 4. She is currently working nights. Mom has provided a list of ideas. We don'thave to get the complete list. If you find something other than what is on the list it is okay too. Surprises are always nice!

The list has age, gender and size listed. Please let us know which person the gift will go to. We will have a wrapping party after church on December 18th

Cash donations and gift cards are also welcome. Please give cash and gift cards directly to Cindy Woltman of Pastor Pete. If you can turn in receipts by December 11th Thrivent will provide a matching gift of up to $200.00. Last year we used this to purchase a few extra items we were unable to collect.  Items can be left under the Christmas tree in the gathering area.

The gifts will be delivered to the elementary school on Monday, December 19th.

Peace Picture Directory

Peace continues to grow, making our old directory obsolete!  It's time to come have those family photos taken once again.  Amy Heaney of Peace owns Studio 11 Photography and will be doing photos for us here at Peace's new building.  If you'd like to purchase photos you are free to do so, but it's not expected or required.  We're leaving 15 minute slots for each family.  You don't need to be an 'official' member of Peace to be in the directory.  The more the merrier!  The available times are:

Dec. 19th-6:00-9:00

Dec. 20th-6:00-9:00

Dec.  27th-6:00-9:00

Dec. 30th-6:00-9:00

God With Us

Are you troubled about anything? Take it to Jesus in prayer. Are you grateful for your blessings? Tell Jesus that, too. Are you sad or scared? Tell it all to Jesus. He is waiting to hear from us today.
