Message from Pastor Pete

The glory of young men is their strength, gray hair (or no hair) the splendor of the old

(Proverbs 20:29 - with a slight editorial addition!)

I can remember the conversation vividly.  I'd only been a pastor for a few months, a whopping 26 years old.  During a special church season, I joined some local pastors in a 'round robin' of preaching, meaning that I wrote one sermon and took it to a different congregation every Wednesday night.  One night, as we sat eating cookies after the service, an elderly woman sat down to talk to me.  She looked me over very carefully, then declared, "Aren't you too young to be a pastor?"  I thought that at age 26 I had 'arrived.'  Apparently she wanted a pastor with a bit more experience under his belt.  I wanted to be seen as the 'wise pastor.'  I was too young for that.

Now, I sometimes live under the delusion that I am still a young pastor.  The Lutheran Church abounds in pastors of the Baby Boom generation, and they sometimes think of me as 'just a kid.'  When I do my work at the synod office I'm often referred to as the 'young whippersnapper.'   But I get together with pastors who are fresh from seminary and suddenly don't feel quite as young.  I remember back to my junior high days.  My dad was my pastor, and he seemed pretty old.  He'd been a pastor for 14 years.  What a geezer!  Hold on!  Now...that's me.  Yesterday was the 14th anniversary of my ordination.   I have a teenager of my own now.  I'm no spring chicken anymore.

In our culture, the young wish to be older...and the older wish to be younger.  Kids desperately try to act mature...and middle age people (and for me, the definition of middle age keeps rising!) try to smooth wrinkles to look 21 again.  We spend a lot of time wanting to be something that we are not.

Is it possible to simply be content with how God made us?  We get so caught up in what we wish we were that we forget to appreciate the gift of what we are.

A summer mission trip for the youth of Peace!

Who: Youth going into 9-12 grades and their friends

What: We will be tripping to Whitewater state park to help with trail grooming.

When: July 7-10th, 2011

Why: Because we can! - God is good to us; we will give back in his name!

Cost: 25$ per person, this covers food and cost for the campsite.

We will leave the church office on July 7th at noon and head down to Whitewater to set up camp and give 2 days of work grooming trails. We return Sunday afternoon after morning worship and some trail hiking. This is organized by Brenda Szuberski 289-6346 & Nguyen Nguyen 545-0118. Call and let them you know if you are interested in going. We need a group of 10; space is limited so sign up today!

Construction Schedule

It's time to start building walls!  Who wants to swing a hammer???

If you plan to help at all this summer, Chad Nelson is coordinating volunteers.  Let him (or the church office) know it you'd like to help build our new building!  You don't have to have any special skills...all are invited!

God Squad Mt. Olympus Trip

Keep up with our building construction at http://s1200.photobucket.com/albums/bb331/peaceeyota. Amy Heaney is coordinating the site, so if you have pictures for her to upload, send them to her at ajheaney@live.com.

Eyota Days

The Community Choir is back for Eyota Days with a performance  on Wednesday, July 13th at 7 pm at the Legion.  Practices will be at 7 pm at Our Savior's Lutheran church starting Wed June 1st and every Wednesday until the performance. If you have questions call Kathy Gust at 545-2331.

Weekly Campfires

Peace is again planning to have a Wednesday night get together. This year, instead of the park, we plan to meet around a camp fire on our land. We will begin at 6:00 pm for a light potluck.  Peace will provide hotdogs, buns, ketchup and mustard.  Bring a dish to pass, drinks and your lawn chair. Invite your neighbors and friends. Sit back and fellowship with your friends. Get to know the Mission Builders. Perhaps a guitar will show up and we can sing a few songs. There will be a short prayer time. We are looking forward to seeing you there!

Thank You!

Thank you to Chad Nelson for being willing to coordinate volunteers for the Mission Builders.  The time has FINALLY come to build!

Thank you to everyone who volunteered with Vacation Bible School this year - serving the meal, providing food, teaching, leading a group of kids, etc, etc.  Your help made it possible for us to share God's Word with 105 kids ages pre-school through 5th grade.  Your contributions are much appreciated!

If there's someone you'd like to thank for their work at Peace, please let us know and we'll get them included!

God With Us

"We are made right with God by placing our faith in Jesus Christ.  And this is true for everyone who believes no matter who we are."  (Romans 3 v21-22)
