Sneakers -
Out with the Old, In with the New |
Many of us aren't aware of how important it is to change out our sneakers at the right time. Wearing worn out sneakers can wreck havoc on your knees, ankles, and back.
Individuals who really use their sneakers for the athletic purpose they're made for should retire them from activity, and switch them for new ones every 3-5 months. I'm talking about sneakers worn by runners, hikers, basketball players, and anybody that really gets the most out of their equipment.
Check the tread and heel level, because sneakers are made to support your weight coming down on them during activity and sport. If the structure is compromised so are your knees, ankles, and back.
So throw those Old lucky kicks out ....and make an Upgrade.

So what is it you carry to the gym? A gym bag? Excuse me if I chuckle. You may max out at more than I do, but unless you carry that tight, sleeveless compression shirt in the Cross Sport Duffel by High Sierra, (www.highsierasport.com), you'll always be jealous.
This is the gadget-lovers bag. One zipper on top? Try about thirty. Everywhere. There's a large, main compartment with a U-shaped zippered opening for easy access and below, a removable roll-out mat, which is great for working out, changing shoes or sitting on wet grass. PVC coating makes it easy to keep clean. The mesh sport flap holds a helmet, basketball or soccer ball and hides away in another zippered compartment when not in use. The easy-clean, PVC-lined, wet end section rolls up and the ventilation panel keeps contents dry. This bag is truly one of the most versatile bags I have ever seen on the market.
So, yes, you may look good in front of the mirror. But don't pretend that when you see me pack up my gear and stow it away in my Cross Sport that you're not just a little envious of what I'M lifting.

(pictured above: owner Vincent Laracca) Colosseum Gym was founded in 1998. The original construction phase took about 8 months to complete. The original Colosseum Gym which was located on the second level currently occupied by our extreme fitness center was in operation for less than 1 year when it had already outgrown its space, propelling the move downstairs to the former Foodtown Supermarket space |

Thanks to all who came out for the Newark Beth Israel Medical Center and Children's Hospital of Newark's Walk for Wellness on Saturday, September 25, 2010. Colosseum Gym owner Vincent Laracca came out with staff members Christina Salvo, Monica Marrero, Dasha Superville and Todd Freeman to support the cause. Vinny Laracca Jr. C.E.O Colosseum Gym. | Letter From Our CEO
Hi Everyone, I hope everyone is making a smooth transition into Autumn with the shorter days and larger workloads. I wanted to share one of my favorite quotes with you: The secret of getting ahead is getting started. - Mark Twain
If you don't start to change your life, eat healthier, exercise etc. you cannot get ahead. It's that plain and simple. The hardest part of changing is getting started. Don't be discouraged. Come to the gym and let us explain all of the programs we offer and how we can assist you in reaching your goals. We would love the opportunity.

Five Quick and Easy Weight Loss Steps
Crash diets - as we all know - don't work. The key to successful and long-lasting weight loss is to start with small changes. These five quick and easy weight loss steps are things that you can do right now to lead your kids, and your family, to a healthier way of living.
1. Cut back on some calories
In general, one pound of body fat is equal to 3500 calories. So if you get an extra 150 calories a day, you will gain an extra pound of weight in just three weeks! Similarly, cutting 250 calories out of your diet every day, like soda or calorie-laden coffee drinks and burning another 250 at the gym for 7 days will result in one pound lost in just one week! You do the math...
2. Eat less fast food
Although most fast food restaurants now offer healthy menu choices, most kids opt for high fat and high calorie fast food meals. Although you could search for healthier fast food, like a baked potato, salad or low fat sandwich, you are usually better off providing your kids with a healthier meal at home.
3. Drink fewer calories
Fruit drinks, fruit juice, soda and sports drinks contain way too many calories. Often these drinks can be the difference between kids being overweight or at a healthy weight and getting rid of them is a very easy way to eliminate extra calories from your and your child's diet.
4. Get more active
Kids don't usually find exercise fun. For them, it's more important to simply get them active doing things that they do enjoy. This might include a new team sport, such as football or cheerleading, an individual sport if they don't like the idea of being part of a large team, or just unorganized play in the neighborhood riding a bike, skateboarding or just playing outside.
5. Shop smarter
Although you may not have complete control over everything your kids eat once they leave home, what you buy at the grocery store can help you control what they do eat at home. That doesn't mean that they will eat all of their veggies just because you buy them, but they can't drink soda or eat high fat potato chips if you don't have them at home. |

Fitness & Exercise Tips from John C.
GYM JARGON
Modern slang has made its way into the fitness world, and if your vocabulary needs some pumping up, try adding these terms into your workout:
Hammies = Short for hamstrings - the muscles on the back of the thigh, as in "I'm going to go stretch my hammies."
Gun show = Muscular arms
Mirror Muscles = Muscles you see when you look in the mirror, namely pecs (chest muscles), deltoids, and biceps
Newbie = Someone new to the sport, or to the gym
Powerhouse = Core and sometimes core plus a booty squeeze
Resolutionaries = Folks that join the gym on New Year's Day and stick around for about a month
Spin head = Folks that wear full biking gear to spin class
Yogatude = Yogis with a competitive attitude about their spiritual practice
What is your favorite (or least favorite!) piece of gym or fitness slang? |

Why I don't see my Abs?
Diet is essential! You will never be able to see your abdominal muscles if there is a layer of fat covering them. So the issue is not that you don't have well developed abdominal muscles, in the contrary you might have very well developed abdominal muscles, but because the fat is covering you're not able to see them. You need to reduce the body fat percentage in your body in order to make your abs visible. Most people need to have a body fat percentage level of less than 10% for men and less than 14% for women in order to have visible abs even without flexing.
You need to have a sensible health diet, and eat in a caloric deficit.
CARDIO
Include cardio in your routine in order to further enhance fat burning process. You can do regular cardio at least 3 times per week or more, each session lasting at least 30-60 minutes, or you can do HIIT instead of ordinary cardio!
Have fun and see at Ultimate Boot Camp!
Ultimate Boot Camps are held every Monday, Wednesday and Friday morning at 5am SHARP! |
