TRAINER PROFILE

davepig

David Pignatore

Born and raised in Union, New Jersey, David has avidly competed in martial arts and wrestling since the age of five and at the national level on numerous occasions.  David's drive led him to pursue an amateur bodybuilding career after high school.  He has done local shows and won a first place finish at the Bev-Francis Bodybuilding Championships in New York where he gained necessary accolades to compete at the national level.  Lessons learned from early competition made him pursue a career in personal training and earn many certifications including the NASM Certification.  With such a broad spectrum of clientele, he decided to leave bodybuilding and put his focus on Mixed Martial Arts.

Through competition he learned the value of dedication and hard work which created his fierce competitive edge.

He began training at Gracie Jiu-Jitsu School. Through hard work and dedication, Dave earned his blue belt in one year and purple no more than two years later, under Royler Gracie and

Coach Tyrone Elijah.

He won several titles in well-know organizations such as NAGA and Grappler's Quest, in both gi and no gi divisions, and among them the International Pan American NO GI Jiu Jitsu Championships as a blue belt.

Incorporating all past disciplines, he was able to synthesize these arts in order to help enter the cage for a full-contact fight.

Dave still remains in the active circuit as a competitor in both BJJ at local and international level as well as cage fighting.  We believe that his style and experience will make him a valuable asset to those who wish to pursue their dreams of being successful at combat sports.

logo 2008

The original logo for Colosseum Gym was created circa 1996/1997 in the Seton Hall University Cafeteria during a short lunch recess. Colosseum Gym CEO Vinny Laracca and friend Cossimo were engaged in conversation when Vinny made mention of the possibility of opening a local gym and the idea of the name and logo were born. Shortly thereafter, Cossimo had sketched this logo on a Carvel napkin and a few days later on a full sized canvas. The rest is history. In the nearly 13 years that Colosseum Gym has been open the logo has been replicated on over 1 million items including tee shirts, key chains, pens, folders, flyers, gift cards, hats, and more!
MEMBER TESTIMONIAL

 Dear Vincent,

I feel so great, even on my worst days, coming to your gym.People have been consistently nice. There's one young man who gets me smiling every time. It's funny.  I should be at your gym right now!!!!! No matter how much I might not want to leave the house, it is my mission!

Thank you so much.

It's only down the block so is convenient for me. I came in with a special for the year and that made it very affordable. The workers are excellent. I probably don't know them all, but the ones I have dealt with have always made me feel special. I've had questions for them and they have always been helpful. I feel very safe but I go during the day, so far. I know programs are available but I haven't tried them yet. I've been a member roughly 3 months. Ironically, I've been going very regularly with a day or two break...and just took a breather for four days..I think...must go...Rome wasn't built in a day! There's always a piece of equipment to use. I don't use the locker room yet but am looking forward to the sauna and will use it then. They did a beautiful job renovating the locker room. I'm a sixty-two year old retired female. I've never belonged to a gym and have found that I can't live without it. I can feel the difference!

Oh, and I think the music really gets you pumped!  Just mark down ten for everything....LARACCA ROCKS!

Letter From Our CEO

Hello Everyone!

I hope you all had a safe and fun Labor Day Weekend.

With the summer almost behind us, kids back in school, shorter hours of sunlight, colder mornings approaching and all of the sounds of Fall like the rustling of leaves and referees blowing their whistles, its easy to get distracted and set off-track. Having been in this business for 13 years, I have seen this typical, seasonal pattern develop year-round. My question to everyone is: "why wait until Spring to start your exercise program to get in shape?". Exercising is for more than just looking good for the summer months. Exercise is for overall health and wellness, keeping your blood pressure and blood sugars under control, minimizing the risks of major disease, preventative medicine and so much more.  My challenge to everyone is instead of waiting until late Spring to join, keep your membership and your body active year-round. You will enjoy the benefits of additional energy, increased mental focus, weight management and so much more. If ever you have questions for me please feel free to email me at vlaracca@aol.com. As always, I thank you for your continued loyalty to Colosseum Gym and look forward to seeing everyone very soon!

Diet & Nutrition Advice From Christina Elaine

  Back to School: Healthy Lunches

Whether you are packing lunch for your kids or yourself, a healthy lunch is essential to a good diet. If you want to pack a healthy lunch but don't know what to eat, here are some tips to help yourself and your kids make better choices:
 - Look over menus before you order.  Especially with kids' lunches, ask what a typical lunch includes and which meals your kids particularly like.  Recommend items that are healthier, but be willing to allow them to buy favorite lunch items occasionally, such as a slice of pizza or a hamburger.
 - Ask about foods like chips, soda and ice cream.  Find out if and when these foods are available at school.  Try to give your kids and yourself healthier options to bring to school so these items are not so tempting.
 - Encourage your kids to take a bag lunch, at least a few times a week.  this can put you back in the driver's seat and help ensure that kids get a nutritious mid-day meal.

Lunchtime Makeover

Here are some ideas to consider when packing a healthy lunch:
- Cold cut roll ups (lean, low-fat turkey, ham or roast beef with low-fat cheese on whole wheat tortillas
- Cold pizza (shredded mozzarella cheese with pizza sauce on a flour tortilla, whole wheat pita, English muffin or mini pizza shell)
- Cracker sandwiches (whole-grain crackers filled with low-fat cream cheese or peanut butter and jelly)
- Veggie sticks with low-fat dip or dressing
-100% fruit juice box or bottle of water
- optional dessert (choose one): flavored gelatin, low-fat pudding, oatmeal raisin cookie, graham crackers, fresh fruit

Be sure to check with the school to make sure that there aren't any restrictions on what kids can pack in their lunches.  And don't forget to involve your kids in the process so that healthier lunches can become a goal they strive for, too!

Fitness & Exercise Tips With John C.

FIVE RULES OF GYM ETIQUETTE

Here are some tips to help you avoid being "that guy" in the gym (you can thank me later):

1.       Be quiet.

Cell phone use on the fitness floor is a definite no-no.  No one wants to be party to your personal conversations; they distract from the mental focus everyone needs to achieve their fitness goals.  Also, if you are participating a group exercise class, don't talk in the back of the studio.  It's unfair to others participating in the class.  You're an adult.  Don't act like a grade-schooler.

2.       Clean off the machines.

You don't want to sit in someone else's swear, so why make them sit in yours?  After using any type of equipment at the club, be sure to wipe it off.  Covering the seats or benches with a towel beforehand helps to avoid this problem, and it also protects you from germs that can be passed on through other people's sweat.

3.       Be careful when handling weights.

Few things are more jarring at the gym than the loud crash of dropped dumbbells or barbells.  Don't permit the weight stack on any piece of equipment to slam down.  It is disruptive to others training in the same area, potentially damaging to equipment, and can cause injury as it evidences an inability of the user to control the weights.  Also, remember to put weights back on the rack when you are finished; it is irresponsible not to do so.

4.       Share the equipment.

If you are circuit training, be sure to share the equipment with someone else, that way you can rest while someone else lifts.  If someone else is using a piece of equipment that you want to share, wait until they are done with their set before asking them.  If you ask them in the middle of a set, they may lose concentration.  Even if they do respond, it could interfere with their breathing.  Cardio equipment must be shared as well.  Many clubs have time limits for these machines during peak hours.  Be sure to abide by these rules so everybody can benefit from the equipment.

5.       Watch your odor.

Be sure to wash your workout clothes on a regular basis and don't wear overbearing perfume of cologne.  Take a shower after your workout, too - you don't want to offend people on the way home, either!

Ultimate Bootcamp Corner

Beyond the obvious benefits of working out and living a healthy lifestyle....here are the top 5 reasons why you need to get involved in Boot Camp to help you achieve your fitness and weight loss goals:

1.     Helps You Push Yourself Harder
Most people rarely push themselves as hard as an exercise professional will. We certainly won't do anything to cause you physical injury, but we will push you to work harder than you normally would on your own. This helps you build stronger muscles faster, develop better endurance, and accelerate your fitness goals.

2.       Quick Results
We conduct a fitness kickboxing bootcamp, and our unique program can help you burn up to 1100-1500 calories in just one 90-minute class. We use many different physical activities such as Band training, Ball exercises, Dumbbells, Calisthenics, Plyometrics, Kickboxing routines, and Resistance Training. This combination of exercises will boost results much quicker than typical exercises and workout classes.

3.       Cheaper than a Personal Trainer
Get all the benefits of a personal trainer, with less than half the cost. Fitness Boot Camp is much more cost effective than hiring a personal trainer. Because the boot camp is conducted in a small group of 15-20 people per class period, we can extend to the participants much cheaper prices....but still provide you with all the benefits of a
personal trainer.

4.       Support Group
Much like any program or association, when people are all going through the same thing together a common bond is formed. Boot Camp is no different, you will form friendships within your group. This helps you stick with your workout program, and provides you with instant "accountability" partners. Plus 85% of all our participants are returning students from previous sessions, and because they've already gone through the program once (or even 2,3,4 and 5 times) they help motivate and provide guidance to any new enrollee. Everyone works to keep you on target and feeling good about yourself.

(We have zero tolerance for "workout snobs" or anyone making someone feel bad for not being as "in-shape" as others. This is a place of positive encouragement only.)

5.         Fun
The camaraderie, the intensity, and the different exercises all make our boot camp a lot more fun than typical programs. If you are stuck in the same boring routine day in and day out, chances are your enthusiasm for working out may "fizzle".  Fitness Kickboxing Boot Camp helps you get "fired" up and stay fired up about training again.

deniseBruschetta Baked Chicken

If you can find a bottled tomato-based bruschetta in your grocery store, you can use 1 3/4-cups of this instead of tomato pesto, fresh basil, garlic and oregano below.

Ingredients:

Olive oil cooking spray

4 chicken breasts, skinless, boneless, cut in half to make 8 thin chicken breasts

Bruschetta:

  • 1 can (14.5 oz) diced tomatoes (whatever flavor you desire like -- roasted garlic with herbs or Italian-style)
  • 2 Tbsp sundried tomato pesto (available in jars at most grocery stores)
  • 1/4 cup finely chopped fresh basil
  • 1 tsp minced or chopped garlic (in jars at your grocery store)
  • 1/2 tsp dried oregano (add more if desired
  • 6 oz shredded part-skim mozzarella (1 1/2 cups)
  • 3/4 cup panko crumbs (soft bread crumbs can be substituted)
  • 3/4 cup shredded Parmesan cheese

Preparation:

  1. Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Spray the bottom of a 9 x 13-inch baking dish with olive oil cooking spray.
  2. Lay chicken pieces on the bottom of prepared pan. In medium bowl, combine diced tomatoes (not drained), tomato pesto, fresh basil, garlic, and oregano. Spread bruschetta mixture over the top of the chicken.
  3. Sprinkle mozzarella cheese evenly over the top of the bruschetta mixture. In small bowl, combine panko crumbs with Parmesan cheese. Sprinkle crumb mixture over the top of the mozzarella. Coat the top with olive oil cooking spray.
  4. Bake dish, uncovered, in center of oven for 30 minutes (or until chicken is cooked throughout and the cheese is nicely bubbling).
