Honor Alumnus |
Congratulations! to Dr. Bobby Robbins as this year's Honor Alumnus! The 1977 JCJC graduate said despite moving to California, his roots were firmly planted at Jones because his grandfather, a math instructor raised him on campus. At a recent visit in 2007, Dr. Robbins met with some of his South Jones High School classmates and spoke fondly of his two years at Jones, where he said he found everything he needed to give him an excellent foundation to build his future in medicine. Dr. Robbins is a cardiac-thoracic surgeon, an assistant professor, chair of the Department of Cardiothoracic Surgery and director of the Stanford Cardiovascular Institute, at Stanford University in Stanford, California.
He received his B.S. degree in chemistry from Milsaps College and his M.D. from the University of Mississippi. Among his current research accomplishments, Dr. Robbins' work involves the development of fetal surgical intervention methods for congenital heart disease, treatments to improve neonatal cardiac xenotransplantation and similar innovative surgical methods regarding heart transplantation. His stem cell research has been featured on "60 Minutes" and he has met with the Senate Democratic Policy Committee about advances in cardiovascular science.
Some of Dr. Robbins medical honors include the New York Thoracic Society Resident Award, the Alpha Omega Resident Award and the General Surgery In-Service Award.
We look forward to sharing his many accomplishments as we honor him during the Homecoming Alumni and Friends Luncheon on Saturday, October 15.
To attend the luncheon please RSVP by Wednesday, October 12 by calling the Alumni Office at 601-477-4145. |

Blood Drive |
A record number of students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends stuck out their 'paws' for a life saving Centennial event:the JCJC Fall Blood Drive. United Blood Services had 520 people sign up and they were able to collect 507 units during the three day blood drive, Sept. 26, through Wednesday, Sept. 28. Typically, Jones donors give about 400 pints of blood during the Fall drive. The Blood Drive Committee's goal was to get an additional 100 units to celebrate the Centennial anniversary of the college. UBS representative, Beverly Clark said, "This was the best blood drive ever at JCJC! I commend the JCJC Blood Drive Committee for achieving their goal during this fall centennial blood drive, and even surpassing it!"
In recognition of the college's first 100 years, the blood drive committee offered special incentives to reach its big goal. Three donors went home with an extra $100 as part of a random daily drawing from the names of those who donated. The winners were nursing student Kayla Dixon of Hattiesburg, pharmacy student from Lucedale, Sade' Washington, and Sodexho cafeteria supervisor Caswella Earl of Hattiesburg. The clubs and organizations donating the money for the three $100 prizes include the Concert Choir, the Student Nursing Organization, the Science Club, the LPN Club and the Radiography Club. The next blood drive will be November 30, 2011 with more Centennial incentives.
