Hello! Alumni and Friends,
Caroline Kelly Summer is sizzling hot on the Jones campus!  Over the past few months we've been finalizing plans for the upcoming Centennial Celebrations, and we invite everyone to continue sending us your memorable moments, love stories, and reunion suggestions.  Celebration details are listed in stories below.
I'd also like to mention the Inspiring Greatness...it begins with us! Centennial Major Gifts Campaign is off to a great start thanks to the many Jones employees and friends of the college.  Over $5 million has been secured towards our goal of $7.5 million.  Join us by investing in the next century of Jones.  Visit this website, Centennial Major Gifts Campaign for more information on how you can invest in the future of Jones County Junior College or call the JCJC Foundation office at 601-477-4145.  Inspiring greatness...it begins with us...all of us!

Sincerely,

The JCJC 1961 Football team reunion group picture

Fifty years ago, the 1961 football team was leaving JCJC and beginning a new journey in life.  Today, this group's bond continues to grow every year at a special reunion in Gatlinburg, TN.  What started out as just a small gathering of a couple of teammates has grown into an annual event, which eventually included wives!  The journalist of the group, Jim "Maverick" Nicholson wrote an account of this year's reunion which can be found by clicking on this link JCJC 1961 Football Team Reunion .

Alumni Accomplishment-Robert Landrum

Robert LandrumCongratulations!  to Robert Landrum '67 and his new 'job.'  He was named Chairperson for the Mississippi Board of Mental Health.  Robert has served on the Board of Mental Health since 1994.  He has also provided his expertise volunteering with the Ellisville State School Parent's Association and the Mississippi Developmental Disabilities Council.  In 2005, he received the James "Jimmy" Stubbs Award, Commitment of Volunteer Service to Mississippians with Mental Retardation, Mental Illness, and Chemical Dependencies.

Ed LeGrand, Executive Director of the Mississippi Department of Mental Health said, "Mr. Landrum brings a personal interest for people affected by disabilities and a passion for quality services."

Robert and his wife Jennie will also continue working a 'few' hours in the JCJC Alumni and Foundation Office and fit in some RV-ing as time allows.  He was one of the first computer information systems instructors at Jones and taught for more than 30 years before joining the Alumni Office. We congratulate him on this new phase of service for our community.

Alumni Accomplishment-Tim Waldrup

Tim Waldrup Congratulations! to Tim Waldrup '61.  He is on his way to officially becoming the President of the Mississippi Municipal League.  The Mayor of Ellisville qualified for the office of 2nd Vice President of the organization which is composed of 288 Mississippi cities and towns.  Next year, he will serve as 1st VP of the organization before becoming president of the MML in 2013.

"I think this will benefit Ellisville and Jones County," said Waldrup.  "I have the support of my colleagues and believe I have something to offer the organization."

The honorable mayor will only be the second mayor from Jones County to serve as president of the MML since Laurel Mayor Bill Patrick was president in the 1980's.
As far as we know, Waldrup will also be the second JCJC alumnus to hold this prestigious office.  Hattiesburg Mayor, Johnny Dupree, Ph.D. recently served as president of the MML.
Waldrup began his career at Jones in 1970 and retired in 2001 as VP of Student Affairs at JCJC.  He served as Dean of Men and Dean of Student Services during his 32 years at Jones and his main focus was on student government, recruiting and campus beautification.  His wife, Pat Waldrup served as Dean of Women and cheerleading coach alongside Waldrup. Their daughter Missie is a JC alumna and an English teacher at Jones.

Remember When...
classes were dismissed at 11:30 a.m. on a Monday morning in 1941 so that students and faculty could listen to the President's Speech to Congress?   Radio equipment was set up at various places on campus and Mr. Young asked everyone to be willing to make sacrifices as students bowed their heads in silent prayer.  Students pledged their aid for the war and Tech Jones was the Chairman of the Defense Bond and Stamp Committee.  This was also the beginning of Air Raid drills on campus.
