Hello! Alumni and Friends,
Robert and Jennie Landrum
 The Centennial
Celebration planning is off to a great start!  The key to our success is finding as many alumni as possible to join in the fun.  We need help getting names and information and volunteers to make it all work.
We are currently working on the Bobcat Football Reunion for this fall. So far we have 111 Bobcats from 1928-1949, and 1,470 from 1950 to 2010. Addresses are needed too, if you know of any players in those years. Also needed are Football Rosters for these years: 1985, 1991, 1992.
Please contact us if you can give us some information.
SAVE the DATE!  The Maroon Typhoon Band reunion has been set for September 24, 2011.   Homecoming, the 1928-2010 Football reunion, and the 1928-2010 Cheerleader reunion will all be celebrated on the same date, October 15, 2011.  Watch for details in upcoming newsletters.  Please make plans to attend!
In case you haven't heard, the winner of the Annual Alumni Association Golf Tournament had to be determined by a play-off because the top two teams tied with a 56 score.  The two teams of  First State Bank of Waynesboro, which included team member, Ernie Joiner '80-'81 and Educational Furniture of Meridian, which included team member, Joey Landrum '82, battled for the top spot with Joiner's team becoming the tournament champion.
On the second flight, the high scoring team also consisted of JCJC alumni.  Jones football All-American, Hall of Famer and JC and Laurel HS alumnus, Aubrey Wade, JCJC Athletic Director, Katie Herrington and JCJC alumnus and Sports Information Director, Shawn Wansley.
We'd also like to recognize two of the 1968 national football team members, Mike Sanford and Joe Howell, along with Jim Clark '67, for participating.  The Alumni Golf Tournament was such a success, thanks to the many alumni who played!

Thanks,
Robert and Jennie Landrum

Alumnus Informing JC Engineering Society

Alex Howard, JCJC '02 graduate and SMEPA results engineer at Plant Moselle was the guest

Alex Howard speaking to Engineering Society

'02 graduate Alex Howard speaks to

JCJC Engineering Society

speaker for the Engineering Society recently.  The Petal native served on a nuclear-powered submarine for the Navy for six years and then worked at the Grand Gulf Nuclear Station in Port Gibson for four years.

As he watched the worst natural disasters strike Japan, Howard said he was anticipating a man-made disaster; a nuclear meltdown.  This accident, Howard said is not as bad as Chernobyl but there's another problem. Information about the nuclear reactors and Japan's attempt to contain the hazardous materials is a little confusing and difficult for the general public to really understand.

"I really wanted to speak with our engineering students because there is a lot of misinformation out there," said Howard.  "Japan has 55 reactors and the U.S. has 104.  The difference is Japan's are first generation reactors.  They are old and a lot has changed and improved in the nuclear power industry....New Orleans' nuclear reactor survived during Hurricane Katrina and the levee breaks.  That should tell you we are doing a better job with construction and containment of our nuclear reactors."

He explained to students that Japan is dependent on nuclear energy  because they don't have any natural resources on the small island.  In comparison, about 20% of the United State's energy comes from nuclear power.  We also have more and better safety standards than Japan.  However, Howard says this accident could halt further developments and use of nuclear energy.

   Congratulations!

Alumni Accomplishments-Bryce "Billy" Smith

JCJC students from the 1995-97 'era' may remember the budding performer who played tuba as he marched in the Rose Bowl for the Maroon Typhoon.  His theatrical debut at Jones was in the musical, "Damn Yankees."   Bryce "Billy" Smith's next role as Orin the Dentist, in "Little Shop of Horrors," led to performing the lead role in "Kismet."

The bass vocalist has performed on numerous stages like Regina Opera Company and Opera Manhatten, Opera Colorado, and the prestigious Carnegie Hall.  However this was his first professional recital, back home in Mississippi.  Smith gave a solo recital as part of the Jones County Junior College Spring Recital Series, on March 25.

The New York resident has taken on a new role as Executive Director and co-founder of a new opera house in NYC, called Opera Manhatten Repertory Theater.  Smith and a few of his friends were inspired to create the unique company in 2008.  Utilizing his corporate, stage, orchestral, production and technical theater experience, Smith says this non-profit company gives rising stars the opportunity to perform and perfect their craft.

Taking time before his Ellisville debut, Smith

He shared, "Your speech Mitchell, inspired me to pursue my dreams," said Smith.  "I began thinking about college and my career, and my future.... It all began here at Jones, on this stage."
