We Care

The We Care program is a network led by volunteers who reach out to address short-term needs - food deliveries, rides to doctor's appointments, a listening ear in the event of a loss. The Cedar Lane congregation is organized geographically by "neighborhoods"; each neighborhood has at least one chairperson to coordinate support. Look at your name-tag or the map in the church office to find your neighborhood. Our hearts go out to Nicolette Stearns and Keith, Kara, Juliette and Nicholas Levchenko (Neighborhood 30) with the death of Nicolette's mother. Dolores Marie Coppola died peacefully on Sept 16 at age 85. A memorial was held on the morning of Friday, Sept. 21. Good news! Dan Wilson (N7) has returned home after a lengthy stay in rehab care. He still welcomes visitors; contact Heather Janules for Dan's cell phone number to schedule a visit. Healing wishes are with Bonnie Tyler (N9) as she recovers at Bethesda Health and Rehab after undergoing surgery at Shady Grove Hospital this past week. Condolences are with David and Holly Cobb Parker (N30) with the recent death of David's father. Congratulations are with David Yano (N6) who has an exhibit displayed at the Waverly Street Gallery. "Stroke of Genius" will be on view through October 6th. The gallery is located at 4600 East-West Highway in Bethesda. An article about the exhibit was recently published in The Washington Post. Reminder: The Service in Celebration of the Life of Allen Ferguson will be held on Saturday, Sept. 29 at 1:00pm in the Cedar Lane Chapel. The ceremonial tree planting in memory of Jackie Burge will be held on Sunday, Sept. 30 at 12:30 pm. Participants in the tree planting should gather in front of the main church building by the benches at 12:25 to be led to the planting location. Should you know of a member of our community in personal need, you are encouraged to reach out to them. If you learn that this person wishes to receive a response from the church, please contact Heather Janules at hjanules@cedarlane.org. All ministers offer pastoral care to our members so you are also encouraged to contact any member of the ministerial team. |

New Member? Thinking about Joining Cedar Lane?
We will be voting to decide whether to call a new senior minister at our annual meeting in April 2013. The Board of Trustees wants to make sure you are aware of the formal voting requirements for new members so that you are eligible to vote at the April 2013 meeting. To be a voting member of Cedar Lane, you must be at least 16 years of age on the day of the vote, have engaged in the worship and work of the church, and both signed the membership book and make a recorded contribution of at least $100 at least six months before the vote (which in this case is October 7, 2012).
(The required minimum contribution can be waived. Please contact a minister before October 7, 2012 if this presents a hardship for you.)
Be sure you can participate fully in the April 2013 congregational meeting and vote by:
- Continuing to participate in the work and worship of Cedar Lane! You may do so in any way that meets your spiritual needs.
- Sign the membership book by October 7, 2012. You may contact the church office anytime to make an appointment with a minister and another church leader to sign the book. Your last chance to sign the book in order to vote for the new minister at the April 2013 congregational meeting will be on October 7, 2012. The Member Services Committee will be hosting the October Signing Ceremony on October 7, 2012 in the library following the 9 a.m. and 11:00 a.m. services.
- Make a recorded contribution of last least $100 before October 7, 2012. You can do so giving on-line at www.cedarlane.org or by putting a check in the collection plate during any of the Sunday services. If you are making a cash contribution, make sure you put it in an envelope with your name on it before you put it in the collection plate.
Not sure how to join? Talk to any minister or member of the Member Services Committee (at the Visitors' Center after every Sunday service) and they will help you out!

From the Music Director
Dr. Henry Sgrecci
We extend a welcome to all with this Sunday's music as we look ahead to the Jewish high holy day of Yom Kippur. Thomas Guthrie's prelude and postlude were composed by Isadore Freed, a leading scholar on Jewish sacred music. A former professor of music theory at Temple University, and organist and choirmaster at Temple Keneseth Israel in Philadelphia, Freed's sacred compositions for organ have become a significant staple of 20th century repertoire. The choir sings the simple phrase "Into this house of Light we come" by Max Janowski, who emigrated to the U.S. from Germany in 1937. He set a number of Jewish prayers for choir and was music director of the KAM Isaiah Israel Congregation in Hyde Park, Chicago. Alan Naplan's song Al Shlosha D'varim was commissioned in 2000 by the Combined Choir of the InterFaith Conference of Metropolitan Washington in honor of Austin H. Kiplinger. It is a beautiful setting of a phrase from the Pirkei Avot (Jewish morality laws). David Eddleman's arrangement of a popular Jewish folk tune, Hevenu Shalom Aleichem, couples dramatic presentation and energetic fun in a song that is heard in camps, Sunday schools, and in Hebrew schools.
Special thanks to sopranos Ariel Mora and Susan Clark for contributing their lovely voices to this Sunday's service.
Pete Moss and the Bog Band
are coming to Concerts at Cedar Lane on Sunday, October 7 at 4 p.m.! Pick up a flyer in the lounge and click

Welcome to Our New Membership Coordinator - Allison Cox!
It is with great enthusiasm that we share the news that, after a thorough search, Cedar Lane has found our next Membership Coordinator! Allison Cox comes to Cedar Lane after many years of meaningful membership at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Rockville. Allison has served as the Member Services chair for a number of years at UUCR and also has extensive leadership experience in Religious Education and participation in lay leadership programs. Her peers at UUCR describe her as warm, welcoming and organized. These are just some of the many positive attributes we experienced in our conversations with Allison.
The Membership Coordinator position is a 20 hour/week role. Allison will be at Cedar Lane three Sundays a month and throughout the week between Sundays. Her first Sunday with us will be September 30. As that Sunday's service will reflect on the spirituality of welcoming, her beginning is a timely one.
While the Membership Coordinator position comes with a number of tasks, the primary role is to serve as a leader in creating and fostering a culture of hospitality at Cedar Lane. I invite all of us to demonstrate to Allison that her job will be easy by warmly welcoming her to the staff and to our faith community!
