Weekly Devotional * September 7, 2012

Life in the Information Age is quite different from any other episode in human history in that we are able to communicate a greater quantity of information more quickly with more people over greater spans of space than our ancestors could possibly have imagined. Indeed, as the human population has skyrocketed - the signers of the Declaration of Independence probably couldn't have imagined a nation of 300 million or a world of 7 billion people - our ability to connect with one another has also accelerated exponentially. The implications this has for democracy and for civil life are difficult to fathom. How are millions upon millions of people, deluged 24/7 with incomprehensibly vast quantities of information, to make decisions on highly complex issues? We are reminded every day of how hard this is, and it's especially apparent during an election season like this one.

We tell ourselves, often quite confidently, that we make our decisions based on "the facts," but with voluminous heaps of "facts" available for our perusal, how can we even know what's true and what's false? We make choices about what we think is right and wrong. Human beings have always done that and always will. What's different now is the multiplicity of perspectives available to us as we do so. If we read the comments on any online news story or blog, we are reminded of the wide spectrum of firm convictions on any issue.

At the core of a liberal religious faith is a willingness to consider that one's own point of view and one's own cherished beliefs and values are open to questioning, that we may yet have more to learn and understand as each of us grows and evolves through the journey from birth to death. This doesn't mean we can't ever make up our minds or firmly believe in a vision of the right and the true. It is a mark of spiritual and emotional maturity to have a strong faith in something and to also be willing to question that faith. A true faith, a firm faith, a mature faith is, by definition, both resolute and open to challenges.

Prayer

O God of our varied understandings, open our minds and hearts to endlessly discover and rediscover the complexity and magnificence of your creation. Give us the courage to stand firm in what we believe is good, as well as the courage to be challenged in what we believe, that we may grow and change and live more abundantly through each day of our lives. Amen.

We Care

The We Care program is a network led by volunteers who reach out to address short-term needs - food deliveries, rides to doctor's appointments, a listening ear in the event of a loss. The Cedar Lane congregation is organized geographically by "neighborhoods"; each neighborhood has at least one chairperson to coordinate support. Look at your name-tag or the map in the church office to find your neighborhood.

Our hearts go out to Donna Firer and Brian, Katie and Amelia McLaughlin (Neighborhood 33) with the death of Donna's father, Donald Paul Firer, who died on Wednesday, September 5 at the age of 87.

We celebrate with Bill and Barbara Gressman (N25). Their daughter Jenny married long-time sweetheart Patrick Carroll in Beverly, MA on August 10.  (The ceremony officiant was the Rev. Claire Feingold-Thoryn, who grew up and was ordained at Cedar Lane.) Congrats!

We also extend our condolences to Phil Schwartz and Lyn Peters (N25) with the death of Phil's sister, Mickey Bauer. She died at age 89 in New York City after a long decline.

Congratulations go out to Nancy Dayhoff (N21), whose paintings are being displayed at the Unitarian Universalist Congregation of Frederick for the month of September. There will be a reception on Sunday, September 9, from 12:30-2:00 at the congregation (4800 Elmer Derr Road, Frederick.) All are welcome!

We also celebrate with Isabel Marbury- Mauro (N25), whose quilt received a commendation by the judges at the Montgomery County Fair.

Should you know of a member of our community in personal need, you are encouraged to reach out to them. If you learn that this person wishes to receive a response from the church, please contact Heather Janules at hjanules@cedarlane.org.  All ministers offer pastoral care to our members so  you are also encouraged to contact any member of the ministerial team.

From the Music Director

Dr. Henry Sgrecci

The Cedar Lane Choir returns to the sanctuary to lead us in the music of today's Ingathering service.  Thomas Guthrie's prelude, Draw Us In, is based upon an exquisitely beautiful melody composed by Harold Friedell, fifty years ago.  Everyone can dance, clap, and sing joyfully in Henry Sgrecci's gathering song, Together Again.  Clif Hardin's song, Healing Waters, was recorded by the River Road UUC Choir in 2008 on Clif's CD, "Look to this Day!"  Along with Clif's energizing melody, Suzanne Bury's poetry directs us to let the river's love, peace, and light wash over us to cleanse us of our fears, hatred, and anger, while filling us will charity and harmony.  Jason Shelton's hymn, Life Calls On Us, was commissioned by the UU Church of Los Cruces, New Mexico on the retirement of its minister, the Rev. Nancy Anderson in June of 2010.  Set in a gospel style and sung at UU General Assembly in 2011, Rev. Kendyl Gibbons lyrics reminds us that we gather in reverence, grateful for the blessings we have known and mindful that life indeed calls us to move forward, with courage, with hope, and with love.

Special thanks to Chris Mauro and his percussive wizardry and Emma Vawter and Larry Stalzer for their strong voices of song.  We welcome back the dedicated members of our choir and accompanist, Thomas Guthrie, and look forward to a church year of uplifting musical messages.

Concerts at Cedar Lane returns this fall for its fourth season with six wonderfully diverse performances.  Pick up a flyer in the lounge and mark your calendars now!
