From the Associate Minister
First, a little bad news: It is with regret that I let you know that our incoming Field Education Student, Catharine Clarenbach, has decided to withdraw her interest in completing her field ed work with Cedar Lane. While she was looking forward to many opportunities at the church and was encouraged by our strong reputation as a Teaching Congregation, for a number of reasons Catharine has concluded that it would be best for her to seek experiential training at another time and through a full-time internship. While it is unfortunate that we will not be partnering in this way, I anticipate that Catharine will become a strong and inspiring religious professional and wish her the best in her discernment and movement towards becoming a fellowshipped and ordained Unitarian Universalist minister.
Catharine will still be our guest preacher on Aug. 26th but will be cancelling her Adult Programs class based on Mark Morrison-Reed's book "Darkening the Doorways." Many thanks to all of you who have already taken steps to welcome Catharine to Cedar Lane. I look forward to our next teaching opportunity when it comes to pass!
I also wanted to remind the congregation that, as our Interim Senior Minister, the Rev. Evan Keely, has returned from vacation, I will be on-vacation and/or on study leave for much of August and Evan will be serving as the "on call" minister. I hope that you and your loved ones are also finding time to unwind this summer and look forward to our ingathering with great anticipation!
With affection,
Heather Janules

Weekly Devotional * August 3, 2012
Yesterday I lead a funeral service at Arlington National Cemetery for the first time. I did not know the deceased; his surviving brother and niece are Unitarian Universalists who belong to one of our congregations in Alabama, and they found my name through one of my clergy colleagues here in the DC area. He had been a cartographer and served with an Army Reserve combat engineering battalion in the Korean War, retiring as a colonel in the 1970s. His was a long and good life, full of devoted service to things he truly believed in. He was buried at Arlington with full military honors. Being a part of this ceremony was a deeply moving experience for me. After leading a brief service in the Old Post Chapel, I marched behind the marching unit (a full military band and unit of riflemen with fixed bayonets) and ahead of the horse-drawn caisson bearing the flag-draped casket to the burial site. Click here to continue! Prayer O great God of every nation, enkindle in me always a thankfulness for the sacrifices of all who serve the greater good, and tune my heart to be attentive to every last detail of how I can care for others and for all creation. Amen. |

We Care

The We Care program is a network led by volunteers who reach out to address short-term needs - food deliveries, rides to doctor's appointments, a listening ear in the event of a loss. The Cedar Lane congregation is organized geographically by "neighborhoods"; each neighborhood has at least one chairperson to coordinate support. Look at your name-tag or the map in the church office to find your neighborhood. Our condolences are with the Murphy/Warman family as Barbara Warman (Neighborhood 31), her brother Steve Murphy and many other family members mourn the death of Barbara and Steve's uncle, Duncan Murphy, who died at age 92 after a long illness. Duncan is remembered as a long-time and ardent advocate for peace. Update on Janet Wojaczyk (N18): Post-surgery, Janet has been transferred to Adventist Rehabilitation near Shady Grove Hospital and will likely be discharged early next week. Should you know of a member of our community in personal need, you are encouraged to reach out to them. If you learn that this person wishes to receive a response from the church, please contact Heather Janules at hjanules@cedarlane.org. All ministers offer pastoral care to our members so you are also encouraged to contact any member of the ministerial team. |

Position Open:
Membership Coordinator
As named in our previous eNews, Andy Streich has resigned as Cedar Lane's Membership Coordinator. Cedar Lane is now seeking applicants to fill this position. For more information, click here.
Due to the nature of the position, we seek a candidate who is a Unitarian Universalist and is a member of a UU congregation. Cedar Lane members are eligible but we also welcome applications from other Unitarian Universalists in the region. If you know someone from another UU congregation who would make a good Membership Coordinator, we invite you to forward this information to them and encourage them to apply. Deadline for applications is August 24th.
Many thanks!
Cedar Lane's Member Services Committee and Heather Janules, Associate Minister

Stewardship!
Do you enjoy coffee and tea outside your home? Many of us, myself included, enjoy a Starbucks, Panera or other coffee store specialty coffee one or more times per week. I love lattes and chai teas. They usually cost around $4. In addition to your regular pledge, would you consider dropping an extra $4 in the collection plate each week? Just imagine if even half of the church service attendees each week gave an extra $4 to the collection plate. Let's guess that about 300 people attend the regular services during the regular church year (Sept through Mid-June). Depending on how you count the weeks, we could be looking at 38 to 40 weeks of regular, two-service Sundays. If 150 people gave an extra $4 each Sunday, we would raise an additional $23,000! Now if we could just convince everyone to take the Church out for coffee once a week, we could raise a LOT of money without pinching tight family budgets. Help us out and take the church out for coffee each week!!
Thank you for your consideration,
Ardene Shafer, Stewardship Chair

From the Music Director
Dr. Henry Sgrecci
Portrait of Bach by Haussmann, 1748
This Sunday's music reflects a collaboration between youth and adult musicians. We recognize Johann Sebastian Bach as a brilliant and imaginative composer and organist. However, as the father of numerous children and Kappelmeister to many young singers, he was foremost a music teacher. His Little Prelude in F Major, performed as the Introit by Jacqueline Zito, is a study piece for young keyboardists that features a strong melody, active counterpoint, and introduces them to the black key, "B flat."
Singer, songwriter David Mallet pens many of his songs while sitting in his farmhouse looking out over a field in his native state of Maine. Composer of the beloved tune Garden Song, Mallett is often inspired by his experiences with small town life. From his internet biography Mallet states: "I like to keep reaching out to touch the past, to connect it with what's going on now. To me music is one of the few things that is timeless...human emotion is one continual chain." Mallett's song Summer of My Dreams is indeed a song that could be sung by many of us (if we could sing...).
Samantha Suplee has been a member of Mitch Fanning's CCÉ Musical Arts and Dance Camp for several years and recently participated in the camp here at CLUUC in early July. Steeped in the tradition of Irish fiddling but now pursuing studies in classical violin at the University of Maryland, Samantha performs Celtic fiddle and dance tunes during the Offertory.
Special thanks to our guest musicians; Jacqueline Zito, Samantha Suplee, Eric Rosenthal, Susan Clark, and Susan Easterly. Their talents and varied musical offerings provided a fun and fulfilling worship experience.
