Notes from the Ministers
Rev. Heather Janules
This week, I have born witness to tremendous loss. The granddaughter of a Cedar Lane member lost her baby through miscarriage at eight months. The parents of this child asked Cedar Lane to hold a memorial service for their beloved daughter who was very much a part of their lives but will never be. And this week, with the shootings in Aurora, CO, we have all been invited to be present to grief and death in its most terrible expressions.
In each situation, questions of "why" come to the fore. When an infant is stillborn, we are moved to wonder how could this happen to such a young life. And how could this happen to such a loving young couple? With this senseless shooting, the questions of "why" are psychological (Why did he do it?) political (Why have our laws allowed someone like this to get a gun?) and theological (Why did these people have to die in this way?)

We Care

The We Care program is a network led by volunteers who reach out to address short-term needs - food deliveries, rides to doctor's appointments, a listening ear in the event of a loss. The Cedar Lane congregation is organized geographically by "neighborhoods"; each neighborhood has at least one chairperson to coordinate support. Look at your name-tag or the map in the church office to find your neighborhood. Healing wishes are with Janet Wojaczyk (Neighborhood 18) who underwent back surgery this week and will soon be transferred to rehab care. We celebrate with John and Betty Smith (N27) who are happy to announce that on July 19, MD Governor Martin O'Malley announced that he was appointing their daughter, Assistant States' Attorney Karla Smith, as a judge on the District Court of Montgomery County. They write, "Karla attended Cedar Lane Sunday school; testimony to what can happen to gifted UU kids!" Save the Dates: A Service in Celebration of the Life of Alan Ferguson, early Cedar Lane member and father of Duncan Ferguson (N16), will be held on Saturday, September 29 at 1 p.m. in the Cedar Lane Chapel. All are welcome. The tree-planting ceremony in memory of Jackie Burge (N31) will be held on Sunday, September 30 (the Sunday closest to her birthday) around 12:30 p.m., after the second worship service that morning. Should you know of a member of our community in personal need, you are encouraged to reach out to them. If you learn that this person wishes to receive a response from the church, please contact Heather Janules at hjanules@cedarlane.org. All ministers offer pastoral care to our members so you are also encouraged to contact any member of the ministerial team. |

From the Church Administrator
Sara Deshler
This summer has turned into a time of staff transitions. Mickey Sigsbee gave us his notice this week after many years of service. We owe him many thanks for his tireless efforts to keep our aging building clean, safe and running. We will miss his wicked sense of humor and his readiness to help in so many ways. Jeremy Newkirk, our recently hired custodial/maintenance helper will be working with Pedro to cover Mickey's duties while we search for his replacement.
Andy Streich, our Membership Coordinator, also has given his notice. He is leaving to work with computer and network support. We wish him the best in his new position, his creativity and warmth will be missed. Consideration of various aspects of the membership coordinator position are being evaluated prior to the recruitment process starting.
Karen Scrivo, our new Interim Director of Religious Education, will be starting the first week of August in. We are looking forward to working with her on all the preparations to get ready for the new church school year. Please stop by to say hello and introduce yourself if you have a chance.

Stewardship Update:
July 27, 2012
FY 2012 - Last year we received $914,000 in pledges but to date, only $893,387 has been paid. We need $20,613 to close out last year.
FY 2013 - We have received pledges totaling $822,375. We need an additional $97,000 in pledges to consider this pledge drive a success. More importantly, we need the additional $97,000 to manage Cedar Lane staff and all other expenses at current spending levels.
You can help by doing one or all of these requests:
1) Pay your pledge for 2012 if you still have an outstanding amount on your pledge.
2) Turn in your pledge for 2013 immediately. Email Sara, sdeshler@cedarlane.org, call the office at 301-493-8300 or pledge online by scroll down the left side of the homepage and click on "Pledge Today."
3) Pay your pledge for 2013. Make sure that you are keeping up with your pledged amount. The church depends on all of us to give our financial support.
Thanks!

From the Music Director
Dr. Henry Sgrecci

This Sunday's music is most definitely representative of family and growing up in a nurturing environment of worship. The entire male portion of Allen and Liz Brinker's family makes up three quarters of the brass quartet that performs our prelude and postlude. J.S. Bach's Bist du bei mir (If Thou Be Near) has become a favorite of brass players. Found in the "Notebook for Anna Magdelena Bach" this work was originally scored for soprano voice and is often transcribed for solo instruments. However its smooth melodic lines and the warm harmonic texture of the accompaniment are ideally suited for brass. This Sunday's Anthem, Over My Head, is a familiar Spiritual that is sung a capella by the Summer Choir. Turn, Turn, Turn is the iconic song from Pete Seeger that began as few scribbles on a tattered piece of paper that he carried in his pocket. The lines from Ecclesiastes allow us to believe that growth does indeed occur when the time is appropriate. The Brass Quartet kicks into a higher gear during the postlude to offer a foot tapping rendition of the beloved song, "Down By the Riverside."
Special thanks to Allen, Sam, and Owen Brinker for taking a break from their usual summer activities to get their chops (brass talk for the lip muscles) into shape in order to join with Henry Sgrecci, Director of Music, for some inspiring sounds in the brass quartet. We are grateful for their meaningful contributions to this Sunday's worship experience.

In this Together from CLARITY*
Let's talk about racism!
"Let's not!" I imagine you saying. It can be an uncomfortable topic. And you're probably thinking we don't need to talk about it because Cedar Laners are not racist. If by "racist" you mean "exhibiting personal prejudice", I agree with you. But one thing I've learned in the last couple of years is that the big problem is institutional racism -- the insidious way racism has been subtly built into the very structures of our society. And I believe that Cedar Laners will care about that and want to work to eradicate it, once we learn more about it.
We have a wonderful opportunity to expand our knowledge right here at CLUUC on August 3 - 5.

Beyond the Church
emma's revolution concert!! Saturday, September 29 at 8 p.m. Unitarian Universalist Church of Annapolis 333 Dubois Road Annapolis, MD Directions: www.uuca-md.org
Fresh from their outstanding performances at the 2012 General Assembly in Phoenix, Emma's Revolution has graciously agreed to give a benefit concert to aid UULM-MD in its work in support of the marriage equality and DREAM Act referenda scheduled to appear on the November 6, 2012 ballot in Maryland. Passed by the Maryland General in 2012 and 2011, The Civil Marriage Protection Act and The DREAM Act must now be supported by Maryland's voters, if they are to be implemented. With hauntingly beautiful harmonies and powerful acoustic instrumentals that deliver the energy and strength of their convictions, emma's revolution creates new standards in the art of social justice. Their songs have been sung for the Dalai Lama, praised by Pete Seeger and recorded by Holly Near. emma's revolution's music has been featured on NPR's "All Things Considered" and Pacifica's "Democracy Now." For more information about the group and their music, go to their website, www.emmasrevolution.com. -------------------------------------
