Upcoming Sundays

July 29, 2012, 10 a.m.

The soon-to-be Reverend Glenn Farley!

Glenn grew up at Cedar Lane and served as Youth Coordinator; Cedar Lane will be ordaining him to the Unitarian Universalist ministry this fall. This will be an excellent sermon for people who may be church-shopping, since Glenn plans to talk about what he learned at Cedar Lane and how it prepared him for the ministry.

We Care

The We Care program is a network led by volunteers who reach out to address short-term needs - food deliveries, rides to doctor's appointments, a listening ear in the event of a loss. The Cedar Lane congregation is organized geographically by "neighborhoods"; each neighborhood has at least one chairperson to coordinate support. Look at your name-tag or the map in the church office to find your neighborhood.

Our hearts go out to Duncan, Laura, Claire and Helen Ferguson (Neighborhood 16) with the death of Duncan's father, Alan Ferguson, on July 19.

The Community Care Board in the lounge regularly features a resource in the greater community that may be of value to members and friends of Cedar Lane. A new resource is spotlighted about every 4-6 weeks. We have offered information about Sante senior services, and the Smith Center for Healing and the Arts. Visit the board and learn more about Hope Connections for Cancer Support. Each organization is recommended by a Cedar Lane member. If there is a local resource that has been meaningful to you, contact Heather Janules, Minister for Pastoral Care to share the information.

Should you know of a member of our community in personal need, you are encouraged to reach out to them. If you learn that this person wishes to receive a response from the church, please contact Heather Janules at hjanules@cedarlane.org.  All ministers offer pastoral care to our members so  you are also encouraged to contact any member of the ministerial team.

Stewardship Update:

July 20, 2012

FY 2012 - (last year) we received $916,000 in pledges but to date, only $892,813 has been paid.  We need $23,187 to close out last year.

FY 2013 - We have received pledges totaling $819,550.  We need an additional $95,450 in pledges to consider this pledge drive a success.  More importantly, we need the additional $95,450 to manage Cedar Lane staff and all other expenses at current spending levels.

You can help by doing one or all of these requests:

1)  Pay your pledge for 2012 if you still have an outstanding amount on your pledge.

2)  Turn in your pledge for 2013 immediately.  Email Sara, sdeshler@cedarlane.org, call the office at 301-493-8300 or pledge online by scroll down the left side of the homepage and click on "Pledge Today."

3)  Pay your pledge for 2013.  Make sure that you are keeping up with your pledged amount.  The church depends on all of us to give our financial support.

Thanks!

Ardene

From the Music Director

Dr. Henry Sgrecci

Rainforest Chant is a high arching chant that originated among the Mbuti Pygmie People of the Ituri Rainforest in Central Africa. The primary purpose of such a chant, whose syllables have no particular meaning, is as a call of unity. Texas composer Bill Oliver has forged a career of writing and singing songs about our environment. Habitat is one of his most beloved songs, known far and wide and particularly popular with junior singers. It speaks of the homes of various species and encourages us to do our part to protect them all.  The Sky is Crying on the Sea is a relatively new work by Ruth Elaine Schram that has an interesting history. The work was commissioned in 2005 by the Learwood Middle School Eighth Grade Class. The text that Ms. Schram has fashioned for this anthem was inspired by texts submitted by the children themselves; texts that embrace the life cycle of water through images of a shining sun, thunder, rain storms, and changing seasons.

Special thanks to soprano Ariel Mora for her solo during the Rainforest Chant and to Michael Murray who conducted the choir. We are grateful for their contributions to this Sunday's service.

Update from the Senior Minister Search Committee

We Can't Do It Alone!

We thank the 219 people who have completed the anonymous Congregational Survey (deadline: July 31, 2012).   But there are many of you who have not yet responded, and we need everyone's input.  Your completed survey and participation at Cottage Meetings in August and September are vital components in a successful search for our next senior minister.  Let us hear from you...so your views are heard! Are you having difficulty in downloading the survey or do you prefer to complete a hard copy?  Contact the committee at seniorsearch@cedarlane.org, call SMSC chair Carolyn Morrissey at her home number (301-949-0629), or see us in the Lounge after this Sunday's service.

Summer Carbon Slimdown

Try one - try 'em all!

Info recommended by

Go Meatless twice a week all summer.

What you eat matters. Cut out all meat twice a week to lose a surprising amount of carbon.

Keep your car out of your commute 1 day a week all summer.

Let someone else hassle with traffic. Not driving is still one of the best ways to reduce your carbon footprint.

Increase your thermostat by 2 degrees all summer.

You probably will not notice this slight change in temperature, but your carbon footprint and electricity bill will.

Line dry half of your laundry and wash it all in cold all summer.

Most of the energy used for your laundry goes into heating the water, and you will save even more by line dryin

Go Zero Waste  for 1 month

If you like a challenge this pledge is for you. Slim your foot print and learn about your consumption habits by diverting all of your landfill waste.

Ways to Help

Maryland Dream Act

Wednesday, July 25, 7:00 to 8:30 P.M.

  • Make phone calls in support of the Dream Act and the Marriage Equality Act.
  • At the offices of Marylanders for Marriage Equality, 8720 Georgia Avenue, Room 900, Silver Spring, MD. Parking in Cameron Street Garage is free after 7:00 P.M.
  • Bring cell phones and chargers. There are other ways to help if you do not want to make phone calls.

The Dream Act provides an opportunity for young people who have grown up in Maryland and graduated from Maryland high schools to obtain higher education in Maryland colleges and universities, paying the same in-state fees as do all their high school peers. Votes for the Dream Act on November 6 are votes for expanding educational opportunities. That's a choice of which voters can feel proud. If you have questions about the Dream Act or need more information, come to the Library after the service on summer Sundays.
