Carole Rogentine, Adam Asare, Deborah Ratner Helzer, & Andy Streich

Worship Associate:  Susan Clark

Last year's summer service on Buddhist meditation stirred a great deal of interest, and the presenters of that service are returning.  Carole Rogentine, Adam Asare, Deborah Ratner Helzer and Andy Streich have been involved in Buddhist practice for many years.  They have attended many retreats and have a regular meditation practice.  Carole, Adam and Deborah are on the Insight Meditation Community of Washington (IMCW) teacher council.  They have done teacher training at several Buddhist Centers and have been teaching meditation at Cedar Lane as part of Adult Programs for several years.  Andy began meditating in the 70's and in the 90's studied at what is now the Insight Meditation Center near San Francisco  with Gil Fronsdal and the Sati Center for Buddhist studies.  Worship Associate Susan Clark will lead a singing meditation.

Upcoming Sundays

July 22, 2012, 10 a.m.

Reverend Terry Ellen

Worship Associate:  Lucy Lowenthal

Terry is known to many Cedar Laners from his time as Interim Associate Minister and his service during a ministerial sabbatical, as well as from his current post as Executive Director of Unitarian Universalists for Social Justice (UUSJ).  There will be a 50/50 split of the offering this Sunday, with half going to UUSJ.

We Care

The We Care program is a network led by volunteers who reach out to address short-term needs - food deliveries, rides to doctor's appointments, a listening ear in the event of a loss. The Cedar Lane congregation is organized geographically by "neighborhoods"; each neighborhood has at least one chairperson to coordinate support. Look at your name-tag or the map in the church office to find your neighborhood.

We celebrate with Nancy and Don Bliss (Neighborhood 20) who have become grandparents for the first time with the birth of Calliope (or Calli) June Bliss, born on July 1 to their son Bion and daughter-in-law Katelyn. Congratulations to all!

Healing wishes are with Ed Meyer (N3) as he recovers at home after a total knee replacement.

We join with two Cedar Lane members who are celebrating the recent accomplishments of their loved ones:

Robin Larkin (N16) is pleased to share the news that her granddaughter, Anne Chernikoff (N24) will be performing in "He HEE" or 'What it's Not Glee!'," part of the upcoming Capital Fringe Festival.

Jordyn Jersey, granddaughter of Lois Delaha (N10) recently graduated from the Duquesne University School of Nursing with honors. She has accepted a position at the Johns Hopkins - Bayview ICU.

And we join our partner church in Dicsőszentmárton, Transylania and their fellow Hungarian culture Unitarians in rejoicing in the recent reunion of the Transylvanian and Hungarian Unitarian church institutions. You may read the full story here.

Should you know of a member of our community in personal need, you are encouraged to reach out to them. If you learn that this person wishes to receive a response from the church, please contact Heather Janules at hjanules@cedarlane.org.  All ministers offer pastoral care to our members so  you are also encouraged to contact any member of the ministerial team.

Below recommendations and information taken from:

I just wanted to make sure that you saw this incredible opportunity to go solar at home! The promotion only lasts for a few more weeks, and it truly is one of the best solar deals CCAN has ever seen. It's SO good, in fact, that one of our staff members has signed up and I'm hoping to sign a contract myself next week! I've just gone through the approval process, so I can personally attest to the fact that it's quick and easy. If you have ever considered going solar, trust me -- now is the time! Plus, there's absolutely no risk in just  reaching out to Clean Currents for a free quote.  See the email below for more details!

Best,

Jamie Nolan, Communications Director

P.S. Don't forget that Clean Currents is holding a Solar Picnic this weekend! Learn more about your solar options and enjoy a fun-filled afternoon of solar info, games, prizes and food for the whole family. RSVP now!

Dr. Henry Sgrecci

Photo of Thich Nhat Hanh

This Sunday's music encompasses texts, chants, and dances that inspire contemplation, meditation, and a peaceful state of being. Sara Dan Jones composed her song, "Meditation on Breathing" as a personal catharsis following the devastation of September 11, 2011. Our Anthem, A Prayer for Peace, features a poem by the Buddhist monk, poet, and peace activist, Thich Nhat Hanh. Born in Viet Nam in 1926, Nhat Hanh has published more than one hundred books of prose and poetry dedicated to the pursuit of world peace. Of "Prayer for Peace" he writes; "This prayer was used throughout South Vietnam in 1965 in the 'Don't Shoot Your Own Brother' campaign to rouse the willingness to work for peace. During meetings with young people, we chanted this poem, uniting our hearts and our efforts to continue to work for peace. Most of us were Buddhists. This chant aims at reconciliation and stopping the war. It was a very powerful way of working for communication. This is something we can share with our Western friends." Paula Foley Tillen, who created the stunning setting of Hahn's poem for women's choir, is composer-in-residence with the Milwaukee Choral Artists. Having composed numerous works for women's voices, Ms. Tillen is winner of the 2008 Choral Composition Contest sponsored by the Namasté Women's Choir of Los Angeles.
Update from the Senior Minister Search Committee

Friends,

We welcome you to one of many updates you'll receive in the weeks and months ahead on the progress that the Senior Minister Search Committee and you, the congregation, are making to identify the best candidate to be our Senior Minister.  Between now and early next spring, when we all will meet and vote on new ministerial leadership following Candidating Week, there is much to be done!

Look for information in various ways: in the written Order of Service on Sunday mornings and occasional announcements during the service itself, at the Search Committee's table in the Lounge after the services;  via the mailed Newsletter, eNews and occasional eBlast; and (soon) through a link on the Cedar Lane web site.

We are delighted to report that at our recent Search Committee Retreat we unanimously elected Carolyn Morrissey to be our chair!  Bob Harrison is the vice chair.  And  all SMSC members have specific assignments (more information to be shared next time).

Two reminders:  your completed Congregational Survey is urgently requested by July 31.  A recent email from CLUUCSurvey@gmail.com

provided your link to the survey.  Already, 155 people have responded (thank you!).  If you have had difficulty in downloading the survey or would like a hard copy to complete, please email seniorsearch@cedarlane.org.  Or visit us at the Search Committee table in the Lounge after Sunday services to pick up a survey to take home and complete.

Secondly, in August and September, we invite you to attend a Cottage Meeting at which you can ask questions, offer your perspective and share your expectations and hopes regarding our next Senior Minister.  More details coming soon.

Your input is vital to the success of our congregation's search for a new Senior Minister.  Thank you for your engaged and lively participation!

SMSC members:  John Gubbings, Bob Harrison, David Hawver, Emily Mellgren, Ann Meyers, Carolyn Morrissey, Lyn Peters

  • Join Governor O'Malley and Lt. Governor Anthony Brown for a dinner reception in support of the DREAM ACT.
  • At New Fortune Restaurant, 16513 South Frederick Avenue, Gaithersburg, MD.
  • Tickets: Senior/student: $50; community supporter: $100; friend: $250; benefactor: $500; sponsor: $1,000; host: $2,500.
  • Contributions should be made payable to Educating Maryland Kids, P.O. Box 8034, Hyattsville, MD 20787 or made online at www.educatingmarylandkids.org.

2. Wednesday, July 25, 7:00 to 8:30 P.M.

  •  Make phone calls in support of the Dream Act and the Marriage Equality Act.
  •  At the offices of Marylanders for Marriage Equality, 8720 Georgia Avenue, Room 900, Silver Spring, MD. Parking in Cameron Street Garage is free after 7:00 P.M.
  • Bring cell phones and chargers. There are other ways to help if you do not want to make phone calls.
  • Purchase a ticket or make a contribution here.

The Dream Act provides an opportunity for young people who have grown up in Maryland and graduated from Maryland high schools to obtain higher education in Maryland colleges and universities, paying the same in-state fees as do all their high school peers. Votes for the Dream Act on November 6 are votes for expanding educational opportunities. That's a choice of which voters can feel proud. If you have questions about the Dream Act or need more information, come to the Library after the service on summer Sundays.
