Whether at home, work, or play, life gives us endless opportunities to learn and to support learning. When are we the student, and when the teacher? This sermon explores how we learn, how we help others, and why it matters. Rob Keithan is finishing a year of part-time Consulting Ministry at the Unitarian Society of Germantown in Philadelphia, and recently started serving as Director of Public Policy at the Washington, DC-based Religious Coalition for Reproductive Choice. From 2002-2010, Rob served as Director of the Unitarian Universalist Association of Congregations Washington Office, advocating on federal policy issues and providing support to congregations. He is a member of All Souls Church in Washington, DC, and was ordained there in March. He is also a part-time flying trapeze instructor.

General Assembly Wrap-Up

This year, nearly 4,000 people attended General Assembly (GA) to gather in worship, attend workshops, witness for immigration justice, and tend to the business of the Unitarian Universalist Association (UUA). We welcomed speakers like broadcast journalist Maria Hinojosa, who presented the Ware Lecture (watch now!); anti-bias educator Louise Derman-Sparks; and the Rev. Karen Tse, an international human rights attorney and Unitarian Universalist minister.
This Justice GA demonstrated clearly that what makes us strong,in the words of UUA President Rev. Peter Morales, is "Working together. Collaborating. Working with partners who share our values. Learning from one another. Sharing. Multiplying our power. Nurturing bonds of love and respect. Hand in hand, mano en mano. This is how we will thrive." There is still much to do, but we can change the world by working together!
You can find detailed coverage of GA2012 on UU World's blog or watch videos from plenary sessions and worship on UUA.org.

Upcoming Sundays
July 15, 2012
10 a.m. in the sanctuary
"Meditation and Mindfulness as Taught by the Buddha"
Carole Rogentine, Adam Asare, Deborah Ratner Helzer, & Andy Streich
Worship Associate: Susan Clark
Last year's summer service on Buddhist meditation stirred a great deal of interest, and the presenters of that service are returning. Carole Rogentine, Adam Asare, Deborah Ratner Helzer and Andy Streich have been involved in Buddhist practice for many years. They have attended many retreats and have a regular meditation practice. Carole, Adam and Deborah are on the Insight Meditation Community of Washington (IMCW) teacher council. They have done teacher training at several Buddhist Centers and have been teaching meditation at Cedar Lane as part of Adult Programs for several years. Andy began meditating in the 70's and in the 90's studied at what is now the Insight Meditation Center near San Francisco with Gil Fronsdal and the Sati Center for Buddhist studies. Worship Associate Susan Clark will lead a singing meditation.

We Care

The We Care program is a network led by volunteers who reach out to address short-term needs - food deliveries, rides to doctor's appointments, a listening ear in the event of a loss. The Cedar Lane congregation is organized geographically by "neighborhoods"; each neighborhood has at least one chairperson to coordinate support. Look at your name-tag or the map in the church office to find your neighborhood. Our hearts go out to Mildred Reynolds (Neighborhood 30) with the death of her brother, Malcolm Meyers, after a long illness. Mildred and her family honored her brother through a memorial near his home in Cincinnati, Ohio. We celebrate with Moe Cunningham and Alba Tirado (N31) who were married at Cedar Lane on Saturday, June 30. Congratulations! Should you know of a member of our community in personal need, you are encouraged to reach out to them. If you learn that this person wishes to receive a response from the church, please contact Heather Janules at hjanules@cedarlane.org. All ministers offer pastoral care to our members so you are also encouraged to contact any member of the ministerial team. |

In This Together from CLARITY
Kudos to Steve Jones on the premiere concert reading of his new musical "Love Songs From the Liberation Wars" which took place in the Cedar Lane chapel on June 25. An overflow audience loved the performance which tells the inspiring story of a union action at R.J. Reynolds Tobacco plant in Winston-Salem, N.C. that successfully overturned unfair practices. Filled with songs that get in your head and heart, clever lyrics and musical jokes, it is a very entertaining work. Best wishes to Steve Jones and Elise Bryant for funding and countless future performances!
Don't delay registering for "Jubilee" diversity training to be held right here at Cedar Lane August 3-5. From the Music Director
Dr. Henry Sgrecci
This Sunday's music reflects our human strength of spirit, whether acting alone or with others. Henry Sgrecci's Together Again is a song inspired by the belief that when we gather with a unified spirit to focus our collective attention on the needs of others, we are indeed better together. Carolyn McDade is the beloved American composer who gave us "Spirit of Life" and "Come, Sing a Song with Me." Her a capella song, I Wish that I Had Wings, speaks of a desire to share with others, the love of the soul, the wisdom of life, the nurturing of a child, and the simple strengths that we can share with each other. Cantar! by Jay Althouse is a spirited song whose Latin rhythmic pulse is infectious. After the trying week that we have endured, we can rejoice as one with this lively song of joy.
Come out of the shower and into the Choir!
Summer Choir will meet at the front of the sanctuary at 9 am to prepare music for services on July 8, 15, 22, and 29. Low pressure, low commitment. Just send advance notice to Henry Sgrecci at hsgrecci@cedarlane.org, so that he can prepare a folder for you.

Environmental Task Force
Help Save Nick's Organic Farm!
Nick's Organic Farm is the oldest continually operating organic farm in Montgomery County. It has operated for the last 32 years and now grows organic seed for farmers across the region. Unfortunately, the Montgomery County Executive, Ike Leggett, and Board of Education wants to bulldoze this farm and turn it into parking lots and soccer fields.
Over the last year, thousands of individuals and dozens of organizations have spoken up against the development of Nick's Organic Farm and are offering the alternative proposal of Brickyard Educational Farm. Brickyard Educational Farm was created and launched in February, 2012 on Nick's Organic Farm with the support of Farm to School programs, local environmental agencies, and outdoor education institutions.
Brickyard Educational Farm uses its educational vegetable garden, a small grains plot, and flock of chickens to teach students about local and sustainable food and agriculture, and the water, soil, environment and biodiversity that sustain us. Students learn first hand about plants, sustainable food and farming, and environmental impacts. They also learn about the value of genetic diversity, in particular, seed diversity. The Brickyard Educational Farm curriculum aligns with MD state standards for elementary school students. This educational farm helps to carry out the Maryland Jane Lawton Farm to School Law, as well as the new state Environmental Literacy standards. We have already served over 1000 Montgomery County Public School students, with plans to serve an additional 200 students by mid-August.
We believe, as studies have shown, that garden-based and outdoor education creates healthier eating habits, improves focus in other academic areas, connects students with their natural environment, and creates experiential learning opportunities for all children. Garden-based education programs are being implemented all over our nation, and Montgomery County needs one. Brickyard educational farm is addressing this need at no cost to the county. Our proposal is that the land that Nick's Organic Farm currently operates could become a Montgomery-county wide farm-to-school hub that serves thousands of school students each year, has farmer trainer programs for aspiring farmers, and supplies thousands of pounds local organic produce to Montgomery County schools.
ALSO, please stop by the ETF table in the lounge this Sunday, July 8, to learn more about how to Save Nick's Organic Farm from Sophia!
