We Care
The We Care program is a network led by volunteers who reach out to address short-term needs - food deliveries, rides to doctor's appointments, a listening ear in the event of a loss. The Cedar Lane congregation is organized geographically by "neighborhoods"; each neighborhood has at least one chairperson to coordinate support. Look at your name-tag or the map in the church office to find your neighborhood. Our condolences are with Cathy, Stew, Julia and David Grubman (Neighborhood 8) and Al, Maggie, Caitlin, McKenzie and Conor Brodnick (Neighborhood 4) with the death of their twenty-year-old nephew/cousin, Nikolay Rauner, through a car crash in Harford County. We rejoice with Warren and Ellen Thompson (N3) who are celebrating their 50th anniversary this weekend. Our hearts go out to Barrie and Al Carr and their children Miles, Toby and Oliver (N8) as Barrie's mother, Rae Doliner, died on May 31st. Best wishes are with Sandy, Betsy and Carrie Shaw (N2) as they embark on a multi-week bicycle ride across the country, beginning this Sunday. You can follow their experience through Carrie's blog. Healing wishes are with Dan Wilson (N7). Two weeks ago, Dan was diagnosed with a brain tumor. He is currently in rehab at ManorCare on Democracy Boulevard and leaving that facility regularly for radiation and chemotherapy treatments at Georgetown Hospital. Calls, cards and visits to his ManorCare room are welcome! Should you know of a member of our community in personal need, you are encouraged to reach out to them. If you learn that this person wishes to receive a response from the church, please contact Heather Janules at hjanules@cedarlane.org. All ministers offer pastoral care to our members so you are also encouraged to contact any member of the ministerial team. |

Music Director's Notes
Dr. Henry Sgrecci
June 10, 2012
This morning we are pleased to welcome our chamber choir, Gruppo Piccolo, to the front of the sanctuary. Jabula Jesu is an energetic Zulu folk song that means "be joyful with Jesus." Stephen Hatfield's rousing setting, with its percussion and layered tiers of echoes from the singers creates a mood of hope and promise. We can recognize the hymn tune "Prospect" as the melody of The Lone Wild Bird from our hymnal. This melody has been handed down from the Southern Harmony hymnal of 1835. Stephen Paulus' created his arrangement in 2005, commissioned for the Dale Warland Singers by a couple who were celebrating their twentieth wedding anniversary. The text encourages us all to keep looking, keep searching, and we too, will find the road that leads us home. Pepper Choplin created his jazz waltz to frame the text "Walk a mile in your neighbor's shoes. You'll understand them better if you do." With lots doo-vah-doo syllables, finger snaps and rhythmic tricks, the song is delightful in spirit and mindful in its message.
Special thanks to Gruppo Piccolo, Manager Ariel Mora, and Director Richard Shrager. The ensemble's music has truly enhanced our worship service!
Like the music you heard today? Want to see it continue? Gruppo Piccolo is in desperate need of Basses. The need is so dire that the group may not continue beyond June 17 if it cannot attract basses to sing. If you sing bass, or are a tenor who has long dreamed of singing "the low notes," Ariel Mora would love to hear from you at ariel_mora1@hotmail.com.
Want to sing in the SUMMER CHOIR? Summer Choir will meet in the Sanctuary at 9 a.m. and rehearse music for the service at 10. The Choir will sing on June 24, July 8, 22, and 29. This is not necessarily a drop-in - we would like to know that you are coming in order to prepare a folder for you. Please let Henry Sgrecci know if you are interested, hsgrecci@cedarlane.org.

In this together from CLARITY
What do Cedar Laners need to know and do about racism?
At the CLARITY-sponsored "Mapping the Journey" event on Dec. 11, 2011 over 50 Cedar Laners assessed where our church community lies on a continuum from "Maintaining" (the unexamined status quo) to "transforming" our culture to be inclusive in four areas of diversity. Our collective appraisal was that one of our greatest opportunities for growth relates to "multicultural/multiracial" diversity.
In order to set practical goals which will move us toward more inclusivity, it's essential that we understand "institutional" racism (different from individual prejudice). The key program in the Joseph Priestley District's recommended diversity training is "Jubilee". This program has not been available in our general locale for a couple of years, but on August 3-5 it will be held right here at Cedar Lane. Enrollment is limited to 40 participants, so don't delay. Register at http://www.jpduua.org/news-and-notes/jubilee-anti-racism-training or by mail. Limited funds are available for financial assistance. Contact Ariel Mora (ariel_mora1@hotmail.com ) regarding financial support, or with any other questions about this program.
In this time of transition, what an encouraging statement it would be to fill 20 of those spots with Cedar Laners! Let's demonstrate our group commitment to learning about and working on this issue.

Partner Church Scholarship Fundraising
This marks our final week of actively soliciting scholarships funds for our Partner Church congregation in Dicsöszentmárton, Romania. We'll be in the lounge after service on Sunday June 10, but contributions will be gratefully accepted at any time throughout the summer - simply mail or drop off a check to the church office. Checks should be made out to CLUUC with "Partner Church Scholarships" in the memo line. Thank you to all who have contributed thus far this year and in previous years: generous support from the Cedar Lane community has made attending university a feasible option for many young people in the Dicsö congregation. The final four students we are featuring this week are studying a variety of subjects. They all hope to make their parents proud by obtaining university degrees, and they all also hope to benefit society in some way with their chosen career paths. |

GALA BENEFIT CONCERT
In Honor of David Chapman
David has led the Paint Branch Unitarian Universalist (UU) Church Choir for almost ten years, founded the Music at Paint Branch Series - brought fantastic performances to the Church, given voice lessons and accompanied many of us. As an active member of the UU Musicians Network, MUUSICA UU Greater Washington Area, the National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS), and the Friday Morning Music Club, his contribution to music ministry and the advancement of vocal music in the Washington DC area has been extraordinary!
We now have a precious opportunity to show our deep appreciation of David's impact on our lives.
Earlier this year, David was diagnosed with stage IV colorectal cancer and he is now undergoing treatment. He has been unable to work since the beginning of February and has growing medical and living expenses that are not covered by his health insurance or sick leave.
We are requesting your financial support on his behalf. Our goal is to raise at least $100,000. All donations raised during this event will go directly to benefit David. Please bring your friends and family. David would love to see you there.
