Upcoming Sundays

May 20, 2012
10 a.m. in the sanctuary
"The Myth of Global Warming"
Rev. Evan Keely

Worship Associate: Terry Hoffeld

As a justice-seeking people of faith, it is time for us to confront one of the great hoaxes of our time.

We Care
The We Care program is a network led by volunteers who reach out to address short-term needs - food deliveries, rides to doctor's appointments, a listening ear in the event of a loss. The Cedar Lane congregation is organized geographically by "neighborhoods"; each neighborhood has at least one chairperson to coordinate support. Look at your nametag or the map in the church office to find your neighborhood.

We celebrate with our Intern Minister, Nancy Pellegrini, who received her Master of Divinity degree, with honors, from Wesley Theological Seminary on Monday, May 7 (which was also her birthday!)

Our hearts go out to Phyllis Reynolds Naylor and her husband Rex Naylor (N30) as Rex has entered the compassionate care of hospice. Rex is too ill to receive visitors but we are invited to send our thoughts of care and concern to Phyllis.

We recently learned that former member, Mary Conabee, died on April 15 at her home in Potomac at the age of 84.  Ralph Krause affirms that "surviving members of the Gourmet Club, at which Janice and I enjoyed many delightful dinners and conversations at the church, may remember [her husband] Charles and Mary also as participants when the club flourished during the 1970's and 1980's.  I remember talking with them many times, following Sunday Services." You may read a full obituary here:

http://www.washingtonpost.com/local/obituaries/mary-conabee-retired-montgomery-county-english-teacher-dies-at-84/2012/04/27/gIQAhze5lT_story.html

And we celebrate that Kristin Grassel Schmidt (who grew up and was ordained at Cedar Lane) was recently hired as the new Assistant Minister for the First Parish Church (Unitarian Universalist) in Milton, Massachusetts. Congratulations!

Should you know of a member of our community in personal need, you are encouraged to reach out to them. If you learn that this person wishes to receive a response from the church, please contact Heather Janules at hjanules@cedarlane.org.  All ministers offer pastoral care to our members so  you are also encouraged to contact any member of the ministerial team.

Music Director's Notes

Dr. Henry Sgrecci

May 13, 2012

This morning our music pays tribute to all Mothers, and celebrates the final service of Nancy Pellegrini's Intern Ministry here at CLUUC.  Those who recognize the music of Pop/Jazz artist Bobby McFerrin probably remember first and foremost his incredible vocal range and an immense talent for utilizing his voice in an "instrumental" manner, rather than necessarily singing with words.  McFerrin was raised in a family of musicians and was, during his teens, a church organist.  He in his setting of The 23rd Psalm he has altered the text and created a strikingly simple harmonic palette for a capella choir; "Dedicated to My Mother."  The Gartan Mother's Lullaby is a lovely song based upon a traditional Irish air, often sung by mothers to their babies.  A wistful violin melody weaves amid the captivating vocal rhythms.  In Ysaye Barnwell's unique arrangement We Are, recorded by Sweet Honey on the Rock, the Choir sings of the common heritage we all share in our humanness; mothers, fathers, grandparents, builders, seekers, peacemakers, faith-keepers, all in the spirit of God.

Special thanks to Molly Sgrecci and her violin, and vocal soloists Susan Clark, Ariel Mora, and Lynn Weidenschilling, for enhancing this morning's service through their talents and musicianship.

From the Senior Minister Search Committee (SMSC)

Thank you for electing us at the annual meeting on April 15 to serve on the Senior Minister Search Committee!  We promise you our energy and intelligence, civility and commitment in working with you to identify the very best candidate by next spring to become the next Senior Minister of our beloved church.

At the 10 a.m. service on Sunday, May 20, we invite you to hear Jean Smith, the Ministerial Search Representative (MSR) from the Joseph Priestley District, explain the process, timetable, and the responsibilities that we will share together in the coming months.

We hope to see you there!

Sincerely,

SMSC Members:

Ann Meyer, Bob Harrison, Carolyn Morrisey, David Hawver, Emily Mellgren, John Gubbings, Lyn Peters

Partner Church Scholarship Fundraising is underway!

This spring we are again raising scholarship funds for our Partner Church congregation in Dicsöszentmárton, located in the part of Romania known as Transylvania.  Generous support from the Cedar Lane community over the past several years has made attending university a feasible option for the young people in the Dicsö congregation.  Although tuition in Romanian universities is free or minimal for students who score highly enough on the admission tests - as have the students we are sponsoring this year - the cost of living in the university cities has risen markedly, and it is increasingly difficult for their families to afford their room and board.
