Weekly Devotional · March 16, 2012
I arise today
Through the strength of heaven;
Light of the sun,
Splendor of fire,
Speed of lightning,
Swiftness of the wind,
Depth of the sea,
Stability of the earth,
Firmness of the rock.
These words come from a text known as the Lorica of St. Patrick. A lorica is a prayer for protection, probably originating in the tradition of Christian monasticism. The hymn "Be Thou My Vision," beloved in many religious communities (including ours; it's #20 in Singing the Living Tradition) seems to have originated from a sixth-century Irish devotional poem, Rop tú mo Baile, that may have been a lorica.
Asking God to protect us in times of trouble may not be a common practice among Unitarian Universalists - or it may not be a habit that many among our people of faith would openly admit to. Whether or not we believe that God or some other cosmic force will shield us from harm if we speak words of invocation, these kinds of utterances nevertheless serve distinct purposes. When we experience fear and pain, there is great wisdom in redirecting our consciousness toward those things which are of ultimate value to us. The prayers and mantras of innumerable religious traditions point to this. The existence over millennia of such practices across cultures, languages and theologies is testimony to the human yearning to focus our attention on those things we deem most worthy of our loyalty and love when we are faced with tribulation.
Prayer
In times of anguish and anxiety, may I never forget that I am a being capable of feeling love, seeing beauty, and showing courage. Amen.

| FROM THE BOARD CHAIR AND TRANSITION COORDINATING COMMITTEE: LEADERSHIP STRUCTURE AT CEDAR LANE
The Senior Minister Search Committee's primary responsibility will be to identify the most promising candidates to lead our faith community and to nominate a final candidate for Senior Minister. One of the Search Committee's duties will be to communicate clearly with these candidates the duties and the role of Senior Minister at our church. How will the Search Committee know what to say? Your Board of Trustees is actively engaged in answering this question. But to do so, we need to educate ourselves about governance.

Denominational Affairs Committee Member Tracey Stein...
attended her first UUA General Assembly last June. She thought it would help CLUUC members who aren't intimately familiar with UUA governance if she described her experiences as a first-time delegate to educate others who might be considering attending a future GA.

We Care
The We Care program is a network led by volunteers who reach out to address short-term needs - food deliveries, rides to doctor's appointments, a listening ear in the event of a loss. The Cedar Lane congregation is organized geographically by "neighborhoods"; each neighborhood has at least one chairperson to coordinate support. Look at your nametag or the map in the church office to find your neighborhood.
Our condolences are with Tom and Kathie Bryant (Neighborhood 23) with the recent death of Tom's father.
Reminder: The Service in Celebration of the Life of Nancy Strouse (N26) will be held this Saturday, 3/17, at 2:00 at Cedar Lane.
Should you know of a member of our community in personal need, you are encouraged to reach out to them. If you learn that this person wishes to receive a response from the church, please contact Heather Janules at hjanules@cedarlane.org. All ministers offer pastoral care to our members so you are also encouraged to contact any member of the ministerial team.

In This Together from CLARITY*
Food for Thought:
"White Privilege is the other side of racism. Unless we name it, we are in danger of wallowing in guilt or moral outrage with no idea of how to move beyond them. It is often easier to deplore racism and its effects than to take responsibility for the privileges some of us receive as a result of it... once we understand how white privilege operates, we can begin addressing it on an individual and institutional basis."
- Paula Rothenberg
* CLARITY/"Cedar Laners Against Racism -- In This Together --Yes!" is one of Cedar Lane's Social Justice groups. Our mission is to lead the process of Cedar Lane Unitarian Universalist Church becoming a welcoming, multi-cultural, multi-racial congregation. |

The March 24 Passport to Adventure auction is almost here. You won't want to miss the chance to bid on more than 270 auction items, generously donated by businesses and Cedar Lane members. They include vacation getaways, culinary treats, special items for children, tickets for a range of entertainments, and services to help you enhance your home and garden. Copies of the auction catalogue are in the church office, or you may view it online.
We hope everyone will join in the fun and support this important fundraiser for Cedar Lane. Admission tickets are available for $35 in the lounge after services on Sunday, or by calling the church office. They are $40 at the door. Admission includes a delicious international dinner featuring French, Mediterranean, and Asian cuisine. Live Celtic music from Cedar Lane's talented duo, Liz Brinker and Kim Murray, will also be part of the festivities.
Never been to the auction before? The first ten newcomers to check in the night of the auction will receive a special door prize of a bottle of wine donated by two of our generous members.
So you can see that we want everyone to be part of this all-church event. We have been attending the auction for years, and it's always great fun. Hope to see you there!
Affectionately,
Kate Harrison and Mary Beth Nowinski
Auction Co-Chairs
P.S. If you have an auction donation that needs to be delivered to the church, you may drop off the item in the chapel on Friday, March 23, from 9 a.m. until 6 p.m. and on Saturday, March 24, from 9 a.m. until noon. Committee members will be there to receive your donation. |

UNITARIAN UNIVERSALIST LEGISLATIVE MINISTRY OF MARYLAND (UULM-MD)
2012 Legislative Priorities
Marriage Equality: The Civil Marriage Protection Act of 2012 (SB 241/HB 438) would end marriage discrimination against same gender couples.
Transgender Rights: The Gender Identity Anti-Discrimination Act (SB 212)would extend to transgender citizens anti-discrimination laws in the areas of employment, housing, and credit.
Climate Change: Maryland Offshore Wind Energy Act of 2012 (SB 237/ HB441) would set up a more market-friendly process to incentivize offshore wind development, while including stronger provisions to protect consumers, to promote in-state jobs, and to ensure positive net benefits to the state. The bill is modeled on an approach already adopted by New Jersey's state legislature with bipartisan support.
Health Care: Tobacco Tax-Healthy Maryland Initiative (SB 526/HB 1153) would increase the tax on cigars and smokeless tobacco products to bring it more in line with the tax on cigarettes.
Health Care: The Maryland Health Benefit Exchange Act of 2012 (SB 238/HB 443)would provide the framework for the Health Exchange to implement provisions of the federal Affordable Care Act.
Repeal of the Death Penalty: (SB 872/HB 949)Passage of this legislation would end the use of the death penalty in Maryland.
Looking ahead, a plan is in place for establishing a task force to determine how UULM-MD can best participate in the DREAM Act Referendum.
Additional information about all of these bills and about how all of us can help to support them is available at a resource table in the Cedar Lane vestibule area to the right of the main entrance. |

Around the Church
Free Childcare During Auction! Passport to Adventure, our annual church auction is Saturday, March 24. Free childcare is available with special activities for ages 3-11. RSVP is required by March 23, to maryefarrar@verizon.net. Teen volunteers are needed to help: contact Mary Farrar at above email.
Afghan Orphanage Drive
The 7th grade, session 2, RE class continues to hold an orphanage donation drive from now through April 29. When Nasrine Gross, founder and president of Kabultec, came and spoke to our class, students and teachers were most struck with her telling us that even socks with holes in them are valued by the orphans, most of whom have never before owned a sock at all. Same goes with clothing and shoes with holes! Needed are used clothes (pants, shirts, blouses, jackets, dresses, socks, shoes, sandals, and sports apparel) for orphans ages 7 to adult, games, picture books, photos (of children and their classmates, signed), used table cloths, sheets, towels, sports equipment (balls, jump rope), Legos, small stuffed animals, dolls, small jigsaw puzzles, Play Dough, toothbrushes, wash cloths, and kids' movies. For more information or for questions, contact one of our teachers, Annette Scarpitta (annettecedarlane@spamex.com). Thank you!
Cedar Lane Making a Difference Around the World
The International Concerns Coalition (falling under our Social Justice umbrella) looks forward to greeting you on two upcoming Sundays:
On Sunday, March 18, we will be holding a "mini-fair" in the lounge after each service. Members will be on hand to answer your questions and show you a quick pictorial overview of what we do.
On Sunday, April 1, we will be hosting an Open House presentation in the library 10 minutes after each service ends. With up-close and personal photos projected, coalition project leaders will speak briefly about specific projects we undertake in Afghanistan, DR Congo, India, Kenya, Romania, and Ukraine. Please join us! For questions or to learn more, contact Annette Scarpitta (annettecedarlane@spamex.com). |
