"Insiders and Outsiders"
The Rev. Evan Keely, Interim Senior Minister

Lutheran Bishop Mike Reinhart recently remarked, "The turnaround of the mainline churches will happen when we in those churches care as much about those outside the church, as we do those inside...the mainline churches have ceased to be relevant to the culture, because insiders trump outsiders every time." Is this warning relevant to Unitarian Universalists too?

50-50 collection for the interPLAYcompany Band

The interPLAYcompany Band is an extraordinary 22-year old non-profit organization of 65 adult musicians with and without cognitive and other differences who played on Washington area main-stages until joining the Strathmore musical family six years ago. The members include amateurs, professionals and senior high school traditional musicians serving as "bandaides" (mentors who volunteer to assist individuals as needed.) Rehearsing weekly year round,  they also give three sold-out concerts each year that feature guest artists and composers playing all types of music including classical jazz, Broadway, folk, vocal and drumming as well as choreography and vocal scores.

Band members learn to play professional percussion and folk instruments from around the world.  Since each percussion instrument can be played many different ways to produce diverse sounds, interPLAYcompany musicians must process a great deal of difficult information that is out of their normal comfort zones to produce what is necessary for any given music score.

interPLAYcompany employs unconventional teaching techniques that enhance cognitive, social and motor skills - as many of these adults do not have access to therapies that address their continual need for cognitive and physical development.

Steve Murphy, who has been a friend of Cedar Lane for many years, is a member of this very special band.

For more information, visit www.interplayband.org.

Rehearsals are Monday evenings 6:30-8:00 pm at the Music Center at Strathmore.

To visit, call Paula Moore, Artistic Director, at 301-229-0829.

This is the final weekend!!!

Denominational Affairs Committee Member Tracey Stein...

attended her first UUA General Assembly last June. She thought it would help CLUUC members who aren't intimately familiar with UUA governance if she described her experiences as a first-time delegate to educate others who might be considering attending a future GA.

The Newbie at the 50th UUA General Assembly in Charlotte 2011

With anticipation I packed my luggage into Marilyn Hathaway's car heading to Charlotte, NC for the 50th UUA General Assembly.  Even though lots of folks told me, "You'll have a wonderful time..." "Just wait until you see the banners parade...", "You'll meet so many people and make new friends...." during 5 days packed with meetings, committees, workshops, worship, and don't forget fun, still I wasn't totally prepared for the experience.

When we registered on Wednesday, there was such a buzz around the whole convention center.  People greeting people that they have not seen since last GA or even the GA a couple of years ago.  Volunteers ready to help lost souls, such as me, find the registration table.  I located the Starbucks and knew I had my oatmeal for breakfast covered for the next five days.  I wandered the exhibit hall and then took previous attendees' advice of taking a rest.  That was one of the best pieces of advice I received, because once the Opening Ceremony began that evening, everyone was on a long marathon.

Weekly Devotional · March 9, 2012

In our lives, we develop loyalties - to family members, friends, co-workers, organizations, teams, countries, ideas. History is full of instances of human beings willing to sacrifice everything for their loyalties.

Loyalty can be a beautiful thing. Spouses that have remained in loving, caring relationship with one another through decades of joy and strife are an inspiration to us all. A friend that stands by us through thick and thin is a treasure beyond compare. We should be awed with thanks for the generations of loyal souls who gave their lives to make our country free and independent, to quell a pro-slavery rebellion, and to subdue the schemes of fascist madmen.

Loyalty can be an ugly thing, too. In some countries (including, once in a while, our own), sports rivalries spill over from friendly competition into riotous mayhem and violence. The enthusiasm some show for their favorite political candidates sometimes decays into hateful vitriol toward the "other side." Some of the bleakest and most horrific chapters of human history involve masses of people unquestioningly obeying the murderous dictates of psychopathic autocrats.

To be loyal to another person or group or idea is to be loyal to something mortal and fallible. When we recognize that the thing to which we have given our loyalty is flawed, we have choices. We can dig in our heels and deliberately deafen ourselves to any criticism, not wanting to recognize that our own judgment may have been in error. We can abandon and despise the person or group to which we were loyal in acrimonious disillusionment. Or, at least some of the time, we can temper our disappointment with a willingness to remain in relationship, and understanding that we, too, crave the loyalty of others despite our own flaws, and move forward in a spirit of renewal and reconciliation.

Prayer

O God, help me to be loyal to the people and things that matter most to me, and may my loyalty be tempered by good judgment, a willingness to grow, learn and change, and above all by my faithfulness to the guiding principles of my life. Amen.

FROM THE BOARD CHAIR AND TRANSITION COORDINATING COMMITTEE:   LEADERSHIP STRUCTURE AT CEDAR LANE

The Senior Minister Search Committee's primary responsibility will be to identify the most promising candidates to lead our faith community and to nominate a final candidate for Senior Minister.  One of the Search Committee's duties will be to communicate clearly with these candidates the duties and the role of Senior Minister at our church.  How will the Search Committee know what to say?  Your Board of Trustees is actively engaged in answering this question.  But to do so, we need to educate ourselves about governance.

Governance is how we carry out our mission as a faith organization.  It involves the relationship between the Board, clergy, staff, committees, and the congregation. During this period of minister transition, we have a unique opportunity to think about the leadership roles, styles, and accountabilities that will be most effective for the generation to come, assessing the optimum leadership structure for Cedar Lane.

We Care
The We Care program is a network led by volunteers who reach out to address short-term needs - food deliveries, rides to doctor's appointments, a listening ear in the event of a loss. The Cedar Lane congregation is organized geographically by "neighborhoods"; each neighborhood has at least one chairperson to coordinate support. Look at your nametag or the map in the church office to find your neighborhood.

Housewarming wishes are with Dorothy Warthen (Neighborhood 8) who is the newest resident of Asbury Methodist Village and a new addition to Neighborhood 30.  Her new address is: 333 Russell Avenue, Kindley Building, #321, Gaithersburg, MD, 20877.

Healing wishes are with Tracey Stein (N9) who is recovering well at home after surgery.

Reminder: The Service in Celebration of the Life of Al Reese (N30) will be held this Saturday, 3/10, at 2:00 at Cedar Lane.

Should you know of a member of our community in personal need, you are encouraged to reach out to them. If you learn that this person wishes to receive a response from the church, please contact Heather Janules at hjanules@cedarlane.org.  All ministers offer pastoral care to our members so  you are also encouraged to contact any member of the ministerial team.

Music Notes From the Director of Music - Dr. Henry Sgrecci

March 11, 2012

We are especially pleased to welcome the collaboration of two wonderful ensembles, the Kokopelli Recorder Ensemble, directed by CLUUC member Carole Rogentine, and CLUUC's chamber choir Gruppo Piccolo. Kokopelli will present two works from one of the most famous Renaissance composers, William Byrd (1542-1623.) The ensemble will offer Byrd's Pavan as the Prelude and his Galliard as the Anthem. Gruppo Piccolo will sing Bobby McFerrin's a cappella arrangement of the 23rd Psalm. The ensembles will join forces for an original work composed during the California Missions, a chain of twenty-one Spanish religious enclaves established in the eighteenth century in Alta, California. Santa Clara de Asis, founded in January, 1777, was the first mission to be named after a woman, Saint Claire of Assisi. It included mission Indians as well as soldiers and their families and its purpose was to offer protection to the San Francisco Bay area. The song Para dar luz inmortal is a typical mission praise song composed by an anonymous member of the Mission and paying tribute to St. Joseph.

Special Thanks to members of the Kokopelli Recorder Ensemble; Mollie Habermeier, Steve Ono, Candace Ridington, Marge Weissberg, Gerry Wright, Reiko Yoshimura and Carole Rogentine, Director; and members of Gruppo Piccolo; Kate Harrison, Jean Schaible, Ariel Mora, Kate Curtis, Liz Brinker, Susannah Vesey, Robin Larkin, Leslie Backus, Jim Anderson, Perry Seiffert, and Richard Shrager, Director. We are grateful for their talents and dedication in bringing such beautiful music to this Sunday's service.

Gruppo Piccolo is eagerly seeking basses who enjoy small ensemble singing. Our friendly group will make you feel right at home! Please contact Ariel Mora (ariel_mora1@hotmail.com) or Henry Sgrecci.

The Saxophone Man Cometh! Chris Vadala, the legendary jazz saxophonist who hasperformed with Dizzy Gillespie, Ella Fitzgerald and Chuck Mangione, will lead his own quintet in a special performance here at CLUUC on Sunday, March 18, at 4:00 p.m.   You will want to be on hand to hear Vadala and his sidemen swing with Ellington and Shorter, play original tunes from his CD Out of the Shadows, and welcome Cindy Curilla to sing the great songs of Irving Berlin and Johnny Mercer. The concert is free so bring some friends. Let's give Chris a big turnout. See you there!!!

Food for Thought:

"White Privilege is the other side of racism. Unless we name it, we are in danger of wallowing in guilt or moral outrage with no idea of how to move beyond them. It is often easier to deplore racism and its effects than to take responsibility for the privileges some of us receive as a result of it... once we understand how white privilege operates, we can begin addressing it on an individual and institutional basis."

- Paula Rothenberg

* CLARITY/"Cedar Laners Against Racism -- In This Together --Yes!" is one of Cedar Lane's Social Justice groups. Our mission is to lead the process of Cedar Lane Unitarian Universalist Church becoming a welcoming, multi-cultural, multi-racial congregation.

Around the Church

Sunday is Our Second Sunday Signing!  This Sunday -- March 11 -- is Cedar Lane's Second Sunday Signing, sponsored by the Member Services Committee.  If you have decided to become a member of Cedar Lane Unitarian Universalist Church, please plan to join us in the library following either the 9 a.m. or 11:00 a.m. services to sign the membership book.  While you can join anytime, Second Sunday Signing provides a special opportunity to participate in a welcoming ceremony with a minister, the Membership Coordinator, and members of Cedar Lane's Board and Member Services Committee.

SJC seeks funding for Maurer Scholarship

The Social Justice Council is sorry to report that the money for the Judi Maurer Scholarship Program has run out.  For the last 12 years the scholarship program (about $4000 per year) has enabled us to send a student to Montgomery College to get a start on his/her education.  Are there any church members who would like to make significant donations to enable us to continue this worthwhile social justice effort? Or, do you have ideas about how we might raise this money for another year?

Please contact Rebecca White (rwhite20814@yahoo.com) (30l-656-2073) or Kay Gottesman (kgottesman@verizon.net) (30l-530-5504) of the Social Justice Council.

What Is a Child Dedication?  Most faith traditions have a way to welcome young ones into the community. Our service of child dedication allows all of us - parents, family, friends, church - to promise to the child and to each other that we will love and nurture her or him, that we will teach the best of what we know, dedicating ourselves to this responsibility of raising a child and joyously celebrating the possibilities of a new life. On Easter Sunday, April 8th, we will have a dedication ceremony within the regular worship service. If you wish to be part of this, please contact Evan Keely at ekeely@cedarlane.org or 301-493-8300.
