"Insiders and Outsiders"
Rev. Evan Keely, Interim Senior Minister
Lutheran Bishop Mike Reinhart recently remarked, "The turnaround of the mainline churches will happen when we in those churches care as much about those outside the church, as we do those inside...the mainline churches have ceased to be relevant to the culture, because insiders trump outsiders every time." Is this warning relevant to Unitarian Universalists too?
Forum: Trita Parsi, President of the National Iranian American Council, will discuss his new book, "A Single Roll of the Dice: Obama's Diplomacy with Iran."

We Care
The We Care program is a network led by volunteers who reach out to address short-term needs - food deliveries, rides to doctor's appointments, a listening ear in the event of a loss. The Cedar Lane congregation is organized geographically by "neighborhoods"; each neighborhood has at least one chairperson to coordinate support. Look at your nametag or the map in the church office to find your neighborhood.
Our community will have two memorial services at Cedar Lane tomorrow Saturday, March 3rd:
A Service in Celebration of the Life of longtime member and RE teacher Mimi Grimm (Neighborhood 10) will be held at 11:00 a.m.
A Service in Celebration of the Life of Jeff Bugenhagen will be held at 4:00 p.m. Jeff, who is the son of Kay and Tom Bugenhagen (N27), died after a long struggle with cancer.
We are happy to report that Steve Murphy, brother of Barbara Warman (N31), is recovering well at the National Lutheran Home. He appreciates all your prayers and well wishes.
Healing wishes are also with Tracey Stein (N9) as she goes in for surgery next week.
Should you know of a member of our community in personal need, you are encouraged to reach out to them. If you learn that this person wishes to receive a response from the church, please contact Heather Janules at hjanules@cedarlane.org. All ministers offer pastoral care to our members so you are also encouraged to contact any member of the ministerial team.

Music Notes From the Director of Music
Dr. Henry Sgrecci
March 4, 2012
This Sunday we feature music by women and UU affiliated composers. Bell Canto welcomes flutist and CLUUC member, Kim Murray, to collaborate on the treasured Irish hymn tune, Be Thou My Vision. Jason Shelton is Minister of Music at First Unitarian Universalist Church of Nashville and a popular composer among UU congregations. The Choir's Call to Worship is Shelton's original hymn, We Dare to Question.
Fred Small is Senior Minister at First Parish UU of Cambridge, Massachusetts. For many years Small has composed and performed songs in the folk tradition of Pete Seeger, embracing issues such as peace, healing, race, and gender. Everything Possible, composed in 1993, is a song of empowerment and is included in the current UU songbook, "Singing the Journey."
Chicago-born Joan Szymko now lives in Portland, Oregon and has established herself as a leading composer for the contemporary choir. She was guest clinician for the 2009 Unitarian Universalist Musicians Network annual conference in Portland. Her biography states: Abundant lyricism, rhythmic integrity and vigorous attention to text are hallmarks of Joan Szymko's diverse and distinctive choral writing. One of her most popular works is sung a capella with only percussion accompaniment and embraces the West African adage, "It takes a whole village to raise one child..."
Special Thanks to Donna Simonton, Emma Vawter, and Kevin Miller, for contributing their talents and strong voices to the beauty of this Sunday's worship service.
Want to wet your whistle with some cool jazz? Make sure to catch the Chris Vadala Quintet in concert on Sunday afternoon, March 18 at 4:00 p.m. Pick up a flier at the concert table in the lounge. |

SJC Plans to Sell Palestinian Olive Oil
The Social Justice Council at its March meeting voted to sell olive oil produced by Palestinian farmers. In making this decision the SJC used the UUA's GAFO process (Grounding, Accountability, Fit and Opportunity.)
Grounding in UU principles - the UU principle of the inherent worth and dignity of every individual;
Accountability to marginalized groups - the ability of Palestinian farmers to realize income from the sale of the oil;
Fit with Cedar Lanes's resources, aspirations, ability to make a difference - SJC will sell the oil for $15 and $6 of the sale price will go to Tent of Nations(www.tentofnations.org) to build peace and co-existence with Israeli settlers who surround the Palestinian farmers; Opportunity to work effectively on this issue at this time - groups at River Road UU Church, Westmoreland Congregational United Church of Christ, and St. Camilius Catholic Church are already involved in this activity.
Palestinian olive oil is made from hand picked, unsprayed, tree-ripened olives and is "stone crushed" and "cold pressed" through an all - natural process that has been used for centuries. Because the oil is produced under the guidance of the Fair Trade Federation, Palestinian farmers are ensured full market value for their efforts.
The oil will be available after each service at the SJC table in the lounge. |

Wonderful donations for the Passport to Adventure auction on March 24 are coming in, but we still need YOUR contribution to make this important fundraiser for Cedar Lane a success.
We have extended the deadline for item submissions to March 11, so you have an additional week to decide what you would like to donate and to fill out this online form. Paper forms also are available in the church office.
Most important, we hope you will buy your tickets to the auction so you can enjoy the international cuisine, live music, and great conversation with Cedar Lane friends, old and new.
New item for bid this year is a pancake supper sponsored by the Board of Trustees. Some of the many other auction items include: a week in Hawaii over New Year's, sailing on the Chesapeake, tickets to the Washington Revels, a barbeque feast provided by My Thyme caterers, and getaways to nearby beaches.
Have you seen the beautiful handmade quilt now on display? Raffle tickets for the quilt and for the 50/50 raffle are only $10.

LGBT Winter/Spring Film & Discussion Series
2nd Friday evening of March, April & May (7:15 to 9:30 pm)
Cedar Lane UU Church Library
Friday, March 9th
Tying the Knot: Tying the Knot is an award-winning documentary about gay marriage, which focuses on current issues in the marriage equality debate from a historical/cultural perspective. The film follows the moving case histories of two long-term gay couples in which one partner has died, and the other loses legal claim to the estate and survivor's benefits. Tying the Knot skillfully weaves these stories into a step-by-step account of the continuing struggle, over time, to legalize gay marriage in the USA. The result is an engaging, informative, and poignant film that underscores the importance of full civil marriage rights and protections for same-sex couples.
An interactive discussion will follow the showing of this 83 minute film.
$5.00 per session at the door. Refreshments will be served. For further information contact Catherine Schuler (cschuler@umd.edu); Marge Dimond (margeryjd@aol.com); or Stephen Colgan (smcolgan@hotmail.com) |

Around the Church
You are cordially invited to the Sunday, March 4, Community Lunch at noon in the Chalice House, following the second service. Your hosts are the Partner Church and the Denominational Affairs Committees. Donations are welcome and will be used to promote our youths' attendance at the "beyond business as usual" General Assembly, June 20-24, in Phoenix, Arizona.
The Bethesda-DC Camp Fire Club would like to sincerely thank all of the members of Cedar Lane who joined us in making 155 Valentines for Veterans this year. This was our 5th year doing this community service project and the second year that Cedar Laners lent a hand. We received the following letter from Stephanie Burns, Chief of Voluntary Service of the Washington Veterans Medical Center in NE DC:...we would like to extend our gratitude for your donation of Valentine's Day cards. They were placed on dinner trays and distributed to residents in the Community Living Center on Valentine's Day. They brought beautiful smiles to our patients. It may seem like a small thing, but it warms the hearts of many veteran patients knowing that people remember their sacrifices! Words fall short to describe the care and thoughtfulness that your wonderful participants put into each extraordinary card. Without their imagination and enthusiasm, this act of kindness would not be possible. Please be sure that you and the members of the Camp Fire Club and Cedar Lane UU Church have brightened up the day for many and your thoughtfulness was widely received. We deeply appreciate your expression of sympathy and support for our patients. Thank you for being so kind.
What Is a Child Dedication? Most faith traditions have a way to welcome young ones into the community. Our service of child dedication allows all of us - parents, family, friends, church - to promise to the child and to each other that we will love and nurture her or him, that we will teach the best of what we know, dedicating ourselves to this responsibility of raising a child and joyously celebrating the possibilities of a new life. On Easter Sunday, April 8th, we will have a dedication ceremony within the regular worship service. If you wish to be part of this, please contact Evan Keely at ekeely@cedarlane.org or 301-493-8300. |
