"Food For the Journey"

Susan Davison Archer, Minister for Religious Education

This will be my last opportunity to lead adult worship on Sunday morning at Cedar Lane. At this transition time in my life, I will invite us to reflect on what sustains us throughout the chances and changes of our lives. The children, youth, and teachers will join us towards the end of our time together for some mutual "good-byes."

Volunteers for the Service:

Ushers:  9 a.m.: Carol and Terry Ireland, Dianne and Perry Seiffert

11 a.m.: Jane Barton, Rick and Julie Offner, and Marion Carlson

Coffee Servers: 10 a.m.:  Carol and Terry Ireland

noon: Helen and Bob Pechacek

Audio: Rich Clark

Board Member at the Office Desk: 10 a.m.: Kathie Bryant, noon: Rick Offner

The flowers in the sanctuary were arranged by Kathy Houston.

Sunday Morning Forum:  Current Immigration Law and Policy from an Objective Point of View with immigration attorney Don Mooers.

10:10 in the Chalice House Main Room (between services).

Please note: If you plan to attend the 9:00 a.m. worship service, that service will be 15 minutes longer in order to include the good-bye celebration for Susan. You are welcome to slip out of the service in order to get to the Forum. If you plan to attend the 11:00 a.m. worship service, there will be no conflict.

JOIN US THIS SUNDAY, DECEMBER 4!

The Reverend Susan Archer, our Minister of Religious Education, is retiring December 31.  A celebration honoring our beloved Susan will take place this Sunday, December 4, both services.
Reverend Susan
Make sure the date is on your family's calendar! Susan delivers her last Cedar Lane sermon on this date. Following her sermon, our Religious Education classes will join us in the sanctuary for a short and special program honoring her years with our children and us. A cupcake party for all will follow immediately in the lounge.

Contributions toward Susan's gift are invited. Your tax-deductible check payable to "CLUUC" with notation of "Susan" is appreciated by November 27, but welcome later if necessary. Mail to church office, or place in Sara Deshler's mailbox in the office.

Upcoming Sundays

December 11, 2011

Services at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m.

"Waiting For Greatness"

The Rev. Evan Keely

The Christian season of Advent -- the weeks preceding Christmas -- is a time of reflection and expectation. Do Unitarian Universalists also live in expectation? Of what?

10:10 in the Chalice House Main Room (between services)

We Care
The We Care program is a network led by volunteers who reach out to address short-term needs - food deliveries, rides to doctor's appointments, a listening ear in the event of a loss. The Cedar Lane congregation is organized geographically by "neighborhoods"; each neighborhood has at least one chairperson to coordinate support. Look at your nametag or the map in the church office to find your neighborhood.

Our condolences go out Dot Koltnow (Neighborhood 27) and her daughters, Nan Chase and Nina Koltnow (N18), with the death of Dot's husband and Nan and Nina's father, Pete Koltnow, on November 28th after a long illness. A Service in Celebration of his Life will be held on Saturday, December 10th at 1:00 pm at Cedar Lane. All are welcome.

Healing wishes are with Hilary Smith (N16) who is recovering at home from rotator cuff surgery.

We lend our love and support to Laurie Richardson and Ken and Emily Maddox (N23) The week of Thanksgiving, Ken's mother, Sue Maddox, was hospitalized and the family learned that Laurie's aunt, Anne Richardson Burdett, died in her sleep on November 25th. (Thankfully, Sue Maddox's health is improving.)

Our hearts go out to Amanda, Gabriela, Sofia and Itati Garzon (N20) with the unexpected death of Amanda's sister, Kathy Waters. A memorial service was held at Cedar Lane on November 30th.

And it is with sadness that we share the news that former Cedar Lane member, John Hilke (the elder) died on November 26th at the age of 91. John, his wife Charlotte, their son John and daughter-in-law D.D. all were long-time and active members at Cedar Lane before they relocated. Son John writes: "He had a good time at our belated Thanksgiving celebration on Friday and had a chance to chat with everyone in our immediate family during the festivities before declining rapidly that evening." Services will be held in the future near the Hilke's home in Washington state. Condolences may be sent to 17250 NE 156th Court, Woodinville, WA 98072.

Should you know of a member of our community in personal need, you are encouraged to reach out to them. If you learn that this person wishes to receive a response from the church, please contact Heather Janules at hjanules@cedarlane.org.  All ministers offer pastoral care to our members so  you are also encouraged to contact any member of the ministerial team.

Grieving a Loved One Through the Holidays

At their best, the winter holidays are joyous times with family and other companions. However, the death of a loved one can make the holiday season a difficult time of grief and renewed sadness. As is our annual tradition, on December 18 at 12:30 pm in the Chapel, there will be a gathering of those who wish to share their thoughts and feelings about the people they miss this holiday season. Contact Heather Janules at hjanules@cedarlane.org or x204 with any questions.

Music Notes From the Director of Music

Dr. Henry Sgrecci

December 4

This morning we offer musical reflections of the personal "guideposts" that Rev. Susan Archer has called her own. We share her love of religion, of people, and of nurturing young people. We offer our own gratitude for the many years of service she has given to the CLUUC Congregation and its beloved children. And we have kept the music simple and loving, with messages that are pleasant to hear and easy to convey. Each of the Choir's songs has been sung often during worship services. The Spiritual "I Shall Not Be Moved" is intended as an enthusiastic attention getter, in the style that Susan herself might choose to begin a Chapel Service. What better way to reflect simplicity than with the popular Shaker tune that we hear as both Prelude and Offertory, "Simple Gifts?" and our Anthem, "The Gift of Love," is intended to let Susan know that we expect the love with which we embrace her today to remain a part of her, and us, forever.

Green Entertaining Tips for the Holidays

Excerpts from an article by Lori Hill:

  • Opt for Dishware Over Disposables -- When serving food, I urge my clients to use glassware, silverware and dishware instead of disposables since you can reuse them over and over again.
  • Use Soy or Beeswax Candles --Traditional candles are made with paraffin, a petroleum byproduct, which burns dirty and pollutes the air. Soy candles are an Earth friendly option.

Let your voice be heard! We've been receiving lots of RSVPs (thank you!), but we still have plenty of room for more participants!  All Cedar Laners are encouraged to attend "Mapping Cedar Lane's Journey Towards Multicultural Wholeness" Sunday, December 11 after second service in the Sanctuary (12:30-2:30).  This event, sponsored by CLARITY*, will begin with a light lunch -- (the only December CLUUC community lunch).  We are honored to have Paula Cole Jones, Director for Racial and Social Justice for the Joseph Priestley District, here to lead us through a workshop and group exercise to assess our congregation's level of readiness to be part of an anti-racist, multicultural society. Participants from previous workshops say that the workshop is quite interesting and fun.

After participating in this workshop, Cedar Laners will be in a better position to understand where we are, where we want to be, and to work on planning our next steps - both as individual committees/functions, as well as for our church community as a whole.

RSVP to ariel_mora1@hotmail.com
.  (This information is also available on the CLARITY website, and on flyers located at the back of the sanctuary.)
