We Care

The We Care program is a network led by volunteers who reach out to address short-term needs - food deliveries, rides to doctor's appointments, a listening ear in the event of a loss. The Cedar Lane congregation is organized geographically by "neighborhoods"; each neighborhood has at least one chairperson to coordinate support. Look at your nametag or the map in the church office to find your neighborhood.

We celebrate with Anne Fretz (Neighborhood 8) with the recent wedding of her son. She writes, "My son Nathaniel Fretz married Abbey Shaffer on October 22 at a beachside wedding in Florida, Abbey's home state." Congratulations!

Should you know of a member of our community in personal need, you are encouraged to reach out to them. If you learn that this person wishes to receive a response from the church, please contact Heather Janules at hjanules@cedarlane.org.  All ministers offer pastoral care to our members so  you are also encouraged to contact any member of the ministerial team.

Music Notes From the Director of Music

Dr. Henry Sgrecci

November 6

On this Music Sunday the Choir leads our celebration in remembering the lives and cherished memories of those loved ones and friends who are no longer with us. Thomas Guthrie's prelude is based upon "Kingsford," the tune of today's final hymn. "Earthen Treasures" was written in 1999 by Jane Marshall, one of America's most esteemed choral composers.  She writes, ""Earthen Treasures" is an anthem celebrating the lives of those already gone." The work offers a rich harmonic palette and reflects upon a faith that embraces hope, works for justice, and embraces God's greatest gift, love.   In the same year Frank Ticheli's setting of "There Will Be Rest" was premiered in Costa Mesa, California. This is a delicate yet empowering setting of a Sara Teasdale poem: "There will be rest, and sure stars shining, over the roof-tops crowned with snow...I shall find the crystal of peace - above me Stars I shall find." Nancy Pellegrini and Evan Keely revive the sounds of the early American settlers in the Call to Worship, "Bright Morning Stars." Sopranos Emma Vawter and Susan Griefer join to sing "Pie Jesu" from Andrew Lloyd Webber's "Requiem, " a work that he composed in 1982 upon the death of his father. Webber combined portions of the 13th century Dies Irae, which has become a fixture in the Latin requiem mass, along with the Agnus Die from the traditional mass; "Pie Jesu Domine, pecata mundi dona eis requiem. Angus Dei, qui tolis pecca mundi dona eis requiem sempiternam." (Merciful Jesus, who takes away the sins of the world, grant them rest. O Lamb of God, who takes away the sins of the world, grant them eternal rest). "Hark, I Hear the Harps Eternal" is a setting of the traditional hymn from the Shaped Note tradition of the Sacred Harp Hymnal as arranged by the great champion of American choral works, Alice Parker. "Lacrymosa" is one of W.A. Mozart's most recognizable choral works, coming from his "Requiem," the final composition of his life and one that many believe he composed for his own funeral. Stephen Chatman's "Remember" is a setting of the 19th century poet, Christina Rossetti's poem, "Remember me when I am gone far away into the silent land..."  Chatman set the work for a cappella choir, to be sung in the style of a chant.  Clif Hardin composed his jubilant work "We Will Walk Together" for the Choir of the Oak Ridge Tennesse UU Church in memory of one of its Choristers, Rex Brenner, with its bouncing character and uplifting lyrics, the song gives us all hope that "we will walk together, heads held high, we will reach the promised land."

Special thanks to the beloved members of the CLUUC Choir, who invest countless hours of time to each other in order to shower us with a variety of meaningful and musically satisfying anthems and songs.  We are grateful for the Choir's contributions to this special service of remembrance.

From the Church Administrator

As our brief brush with wintry weather reminds us, bad weather can come up very quickly. Our Facilities staff only work a day schedule and may not be present when the temperatures drop and ice may form.   This is our Church and it behooves us to keep it safe for our members and guests.  There is ice melt kept in the wooden bins outside the Chapel, please take time to scatter it on walkways to prevent folks slipping and possibly getting injured. If it is scattered by hand it is important to promptly wash your hands as it is caustic.

cluuc monster mash Check out this photo, for those of you who didn't attend Thom Guthrie's stellar organ concert last Saturday night you missed observing some of the most august, respected pillars of our community doing the Monster Mash. It was a Graveyard Smash with our own Reverend Keely as the Doctor.

Endowment Giving -
You Have a Choice

November is Endowment Month as it has been for many years.

For more than 25 years our congregants
have responded generously to this appeal. Since 2007, in addition to contributing to the General Endowment Fund or the Memorial Fund, there is also a choice to direct your contribution to the Social Justice Endowment Fund.

The earnings disbursed by the Endowment Fund have been used to maintain and improve church buildings and property. Money generated by the Memorial Fund is, by direction of its charter, dedicated to care for the church grounds and the archives. When the Social Justice Endowment Fund reaches a total value of $200,000, a portion of its earnings will provide a dedicated stream of income to be used for social justice initiatives-this will, of course, be in addition to the annual support from the
church's operating budget.
So there is a way for you to direct your contributions to that fund that best reflects your wishes. If you have questions about any of the endowment funds, call or email me or any member of the Board of Trustees and we will be happy to discuss this with you. Gerry Peterson, pete7517@verizon.net.

Join in and help us make Rev. Susan Archer's retirement quilt!

Please help with Susan's quilt. No sewing necessary.

We are creating a quilt for Susan Archer, as a retirement gift. We have found "magic" paper that allows us to transfer colored pictures (magic marker drawings, pastel drawings, photos, etc.} onto fabric. We have been asking the RE classes to contribute one or more drawings per class. We will then combine these with sashing and border fabrics into a quilt.

If there are others in the congregation, individuals or groups, who would like to contribute drawings, photos or more traditional pieced blocks, we would like to include yours also.

Quilt information ---

Art needed no later than November 13, 2011

Size: The drawing will need to be small since it will be transferred onto a 6"x6" fabric square. We will do the transfer and all we need is your art.

Paper: transfer paper will be supplied.

Please no writing, since image will be mirror image.

Labyrinth Walk:

Please join us for our Labyrinth Walk on Sunday Nov 13th from 2:00 to 4:00 PM in the sanctuary. All donations from this walk will be given to the Manna Food Drive which supports the hungry in Montgomery County. For information: chris.mauro42@gmail.com.

From the Membership Coordinator

Join us tomorrow, Saturday Nov 5th for our Welcome Workshop!

We offer this opportunity to learn about Unitarian Universalism, our spiritual community, how we operate, what we offer, and ways to get engaged. The workshop is hosted by the membership coordinator with interactive sessions led by each of the ministers. If you are a new member, longtime member, or interested visitor, this is an ideal way to extend your knowledge of the faith, the church, and to build relationships. Lunch is provided.  No fee.

We want to extend a warm invitation to all members, friends, and visitors to our Welcome Workshop, Saturday, November 5, in the church library from 10am to 1pm.  And if you have already attended one, you are encouraged to do it again.  Because there's a different group of people each time, it's always a little different and a great way to meet new people.  Feel free to bring a friend.

For long time members this is a chance to be extend the hand of welcoming and hospitality to our new members and visitors as well as an opportunity to learn more about our church.   Each time we do this people report being surprised at how the time flies by and that they enjoyed the experience, learned a lot, and got to meet others.  It's a great event.

The workshop is free and we can provide childcare if you let us know in advance.  It is listed in the Adult Programs booklet as course A9.
If you have questions contact our membership coordinator Andy Streich, astreich@cedarlane.org.

Raw Faith
Tonight!!
November 4, 7:00 p.m. Cedar Lane
With special guest, the Rev. Marilyn Sewell

Raw FaithCedar Lane UU Church - in partnership with River Road UU Congregation and the Joseph Priestley District - is delighted to offer a screening of the documentary film "Raw Faith" as part of our "Meaning of Ministry" program series. Find out more about the series in the Fall Adult Programs booklet, page 14, or at http://cedarlane.org/ap/ REVFALL11.pdf; page 14.  Admission is open and free but donations are welcome ($5-$10 suggested.)

If you haven't heard of "Raw Faith," in the words of the film's website,"This surprisingly open and revealing documentary follows two years in the private life of a [Unitarian Universalist] minister. Marilyn Sewell is successful and beloved in the pulpit, but behind the scenes she is lonely and yearning for change. As she considers leaving the ministry, she realizes she will be leaving her only social network. Yet when she falls in love for the first time, she realizes she does not trust intimacy. A study in contrasts, Marilyn must rely on raw faith as she questions her future, her difficult past, her God and, most importantly, her ability to love." You may view a trailer here: http://alivemindcinema.com/req.php?req=static.php&page=RawFaithFIP The subject of the film, Marilyn Sewell, will be present that evening and will engage the audience after the film.

"The Ethics of Food" -

A Kiplinger Lecture by Mark Winne

With Thanksgiving quickly approaching, the subject of food is prominent on people's minds. For those who want an opportunity to delve into the subject from a social justice viewpoint, a lecture is being held at Cedar Lane Unitarian Universalist Church featuring Mark Winne, who is known for his books on how a healthy food system is too often adversely affected by big industry and government, and too often for the privileged.

Winne has a rich and storied history bringing food co-ops and other healthy food alternatives to communities saddled by low incomes and little opportunity for healthy eating. But, he says, there is positive impact being made by local efforts and he will talk about some of them in his address. Mr. Winne's talk is this year's W.M. Kiplinger Lecture on Ethics in American Society. His topic is "The Social Justice of Food". The lecture, which is open to the public, begins at 2 p.m., Saturday, Nov. 12. Adult tickets are $10; students are free. Cedar Lane UUC is located at 9601 Cedar Lane in Bethesda, Maryland.

Board agrees to nominate at least two moderator candidates

At October meeting, trustees draft covenant, plan for Justice GA, discuss 'scope of the association.'The Unitarian Universalist Association Board of Trustees convened in Boston October 19-23 with a new feel. Ten trustees were elected to the 25-member board at the 2011 General Assembly, adding greater diversity to the board, which now includes a number of young adults, openly gay and lesbian members, several people of color, and members of small and large congregations. The board took up new business as well, voting to nominate at least two candidates for the position of UUA moderator, who will be elected in 2013. And following the President's Report by UUA President Peter Morales, the board discussed whether the scope of the association should be expanded to serve people who are not members of congregations.

Time to Register! JOIN CEDAR LANE'S 5th HOUSE REBUILDING MISSION TO NEW ORLEANS

February 4-11, 2012

Living Our Mission:  VOLUNTEER TO IMPROVE HOUSING in several ways!

Nancy Pellegrini's message last Sunday morning spoke of the important service that Cedar Laners generously give to benefit our communities, and of the additional value when we team up with people of other faiths toward our common goals.  Our mission through the non-profit organization Rebuilding Together is an example of multiple ways every Cedar Laner can volunteer to help homeowners in need, while building bridges of cooperation.   We encourage you to sign up for Cedar Lane's 5th annual trip to rebuild needed housing in New Orleans (this year February 4-11, 2012; register by Dec 16), for which Cedar Laners team up with volunteers from across the Washington area, forging rewarding friendships in the process.  Or join our crew for Rebuilding Together's annual local Montgomery County Work Day on a Saturday next Spring; last year Cedar Laners joined with volunteers from St Francis Episcopal Church to make house improvements for a Kensington homeowner with disabilities.    And on January 28, 2012, the Concerts at Cedar Lane Series showcases instrumental brass in an orchestral program to benefit Rebuilding Together.   For more information about signing up for these opportunities, email Cedar Lane crew captain Mike Burski at mga1960@earthlink.net
