Sunday Morning Forum:

The Hidden Life of Guns. More than 35,000 people have been killed in Mexico by guns that originated in the United States. Our speaker, James Grimaldi, a Pulitzer Prize winning reporter, was a member of a team of Washington Post reporters who undertook a year-long investigation for a series of articles on how US guns end up on Mexican streets. He will discuss their findings and as well as subsequent developments.

10:10 in the Chalice House Main Room (between services).

From the Chair of the Board of Trustees

The Board of Trustees joins the congregation in congratulating the organizers and volunteers of the highly successful "Living the Mission" Day on October 22.   Intergenerational events are especially fun, and we hope to see more of them - such as the annual fall Grounds Work Day on November 5.  Bring the family!  Only a week later is the Kiplinger Lecture on "The Social Justice of Food."  We are indeed a lucky community to have so many unique opportunities and amazing people to organize them.

The BOT Transition Coordinating Committee is now conducting interviews of candidates to fill the position of Temporary R.E. Coordinator for the first six months of 2012 until an Interim R.E. Leader can be hired through the UUA process.  The Board will make its decision at its next meeting.  The Board will also decide on a process following UUA recommendations for convening a Search Committee for our settled Senior Minister.  The Leadership Development and Nominations Committee will assist in this process, and the congregation will elect the Search Committee members at the Annual Meeting next April.  Your recommendations for search committee candidates are welcome.

We are grateful to Kate Harrison and Mary Beth Nowinski for agreeing to co-chair the Auction Committee this year.  If you'd like to participate in one of Cedar Lane's most rewarding and important events of the year, please join the committee!  We'd love to have you.

We Care

The We Care program is a network led by volunteers who reach out to address short-term needs - food deliveries, rides to doctor's appointments, a listening ear in the event of a loss. The Cedar Lane congregation is organized geographically by "neighborhoods"; each neighborhood has at least one chairperson to coordinate support. Look at your nametag or the map in the church office to find your neighborhood.

Healing wishes are with Al Reese (Neighborhood 30) who is recovering from a fall at Asbury's Wilson Healthcare Center. Visitors and cards are welcome! (Cards should be sent to his apartment: 419 Russell Avenue, Apt 320, Gaithersburg, MD  20877)

Congratulations are with Kate and Bob Harrison (N8) with the birth of their newest grandchild. Phoebe Elizabeth was born on October 21 to Kate's son Peter and Candace Hammond. Phoebe joins brother Jeremy and sister Kazmiera. Hooray!

Should you know of a member of our community in personal need, you are encouraged to reach out to them. If you learn that this person wishes to receive a response from the church, please contact Heather Janules at hjanules@cedarlane.org.  All ministers offer pastoral care to our members so  you are also encouraged to contact any member of the ministerial team.

Upcoming Sundays

November 6, 2011 9 a.m. and 11 a.m.

"For They Are Now a Part of Us"

Evan Keely, Interim Senior Minister
A service of remembrance featuring our church's musicians and words of mourning, comfort and meaning from Rev. Keely and our Intern Minister Nancy Pellegrini. Daylight saving time ends today -- remember to turn clocks back an hour.

Forum:   Montgomery County Council President, Valerie Ervin, will speak about her year as Council President, discuss pending legislation before the Council, explain her experience during the special Session of the Maryland General Assembly, and address communityconcerns. Ms. Ervin is also Chair of the Council's Education Committee.

Manna Food: Next Sunday will be our regular Manna Food First Sunday collection for the Blue Box and Smart Sacks.  Montgomery County's neediest families deserve our support.  Last year, Manna served over 172,000 Montgomery County residents.  Help fill the Blue Box.

Music Notes From the Director of Music

Dr. Henry Sgrecci

October 30

This morning's music reflects the diverse music of worship as it is inspired by varied religious beliefs. Bell Canto's prelude, "Meditation on Beautiful Savior," is based on a familiar hymn tune. It was composed in memory of a member of the Campanella Ringers of the First Congregational UCC of Elyria, Ohio, who lost her life to cancer. The first three notes heard in the song, are represented by the bells that she rang in the handbell choir. "Down to the River to Pray" is a familiar song that gained its current popularity from the movie, "O Brother, Where Art Thou?" While identified as a "Spiritual" and included in the Southern Harmony hymnal, George H. Allan of Nashville, TN has actually been identified as the composer.   His song was included in the book "Slave Songs of the United States," published in 1867. Although going by a different title and slightly altered text, the general disposition of the song has always been about inviting people down to the valley (river) to pray," studyin' about that good old way."   The Offertory, "Ave Regina Caelorum" by the seventeenth century composer, Isabella Leonarda, is what was recognized in Catholic churches as a Marion antiphon: a song written for the devotion of the Virgin Mary and sung during the Liturgy of the Hours.   Leonarda was one of just a few female composers in the seventeeth century; she began living at the Collegio di Sant'Orsola, a convent in Novara, at the age of 16, and never left, reaching the position of Mother Superior in her later years. Virtually all of her music carried a dedication to the Virgin Mary and the independent vocal lines within the work are characteristic of the music of the times. The Anthem, "One Voice" is a recent composition by Ruth Moody, lead singer with the popular Canadian-based folk trio, "Wailin Jennys."   The song begins simply, "This is a song of one voice, one spirit," and continues, adding two voices, then three, then all voices; "singing with love, and the will to trust." It is a song of unity, beckoning all of us with our varying backgrounds to sing together as one, to be together, as one.

Special thanks to members of Bell Canto, members of Gruppo Piccolo, and Director, Richard Shrager, and pianist, Susannah Vesey.   We are grateful for their many hours of preparation and their inspiring musical contributions during this Sunday's service.

REMINDER!! Got Halloween delights? Plan to attend Thomas Guthrie's organ concert tomorrow evening, October 29 at 7:30 PM! Thom promises lots of fun and merriment as he casts a delightful Halloween spell. He'll be assisted by the Choir, Gruppo Piccolo, members of the Children's and Youth Choirs, the Whatever Four Quartet, and a special spooky guest. This will be a creepy, eery evening of free fun for all. See you then...

From the Church Administrator

For those of you who attended  'Living the Mission' last Saturday, what a great event.  Many thanks to Mary Karimi and Kathie Bryant for organizing and to the many who worked hard to make it work.  The Cedar Lane Timeline begun then is still up in the hallway outside the Kitchen, come by to check it out and add your information.

TAR SANDS PROTEST

 tarsands

On Sunday afternoon, November 6th, with your help, the U.S. climate movement will stage the largest and most important demonstration we have ever held.  On that day many thousands of us will peacefully use our bodies to literally encircle the White House. Together, hand in hand, we will create an audacious ring of hope to call upon President Obama to follow through on his 2008 call for us to be "the generation that ends the tyranny of oil." The President can and must be true to his words by rejecting the permit for the Keystone XL tar sands pipeline.

Sign up here to tell us if you can come to the White House on November 6th to protest the pipeline. Our goal is to get 10,000 people there, so we clearly need your help! You can also invite your friends and family members to come. We make it easy with one click right hereThis is truly an all-hands-on-deck moment, and CCAN is responding accordingly.

Less than two weeks ago we helped organize a different rally at the State Department's final hearing on the Keystone XL pipeline in Washington DC. Nearly 1,000 people were there. Here's a must-see video of that day, featuring Bill McKibben

Click here to watch the video call to action

This is just a small taste of what you'll experience on November 6th. Campaign leaders picked November 6th because it's exactly one year before the 2012 election, and we want to remind Obama of what he promised us in 2008. Meanwhile, the President has to make a decision on the pipeline by the end of this year. So November 6th will be a pivotal, culminating moment in our historic tar sands campaign. That campaign began last August 20th when the first of 1,253 people were peacefully arrested at the White House to put the Keystone XL issue on the national political map. Now it's time to go back to the White House to close the deal.

Read more here about the corruption and absurdities behind this $7 billion pipeline proposal. Can I count on you to be at the White House November 6th? I can't wait.

With hope,

Mike Tidwell, Executive Director

Chesapeake Climate Action Network (CCAN)

Family Letter Coming Soon!

We are on the threshold of the season of celebrations and holy days, so our yearly holiday letter will be arriving soon. It will include all the details, sign up info, and overview of the amazing opportunities and activities from which you can choose with your family. In the meantime, here are the dates so you can begin to mark on your calendars:

Sunday, Nov. 6: First Sunday Smart Sacks collection for children in Montgomery County who need food to tide them

over the weekend (part of Manna Food)

Sunday, Nov. 20: Service for All Ages (first 20 min.) followed by Religious Education classes. Bring food for the All Souls Food Drive

Saturday, Dec. 3: Holiday Craft Day

First Sunday Smart Sacks November 6

Please bring food for hungry children in Montgomery County on Sunday, November 6. This will be Cedar Lane's twelfth First Sunday Smart Sacks collection since our program was initiated! Involve your children in the shopping, and place items in the red bins located outside the chapel and in the downstairs lobby. The food is taken to the Manna Food Center, and distributed to children on Friday afternoons to take home for the weekend (during the week, they are able to get breakfast and lunch from school, but on weekends they can't). In the past year, CLUUC has proudly collected about 2 ½ TONS of non-perishable healthy snacks, and we'd like to kick it up another notch this year. There will be a special announcement on Sunday, October 30,, by a new member of this task force, so stay tuned, and keep up the good work! Welcome Workshop Saturday, Nov 5

We offer this opportunity to learn about Unitarian Universalism, our spiritual community, how we operate, what we offer, and ways to get engaged. The workshop is hosted by the membership coordinator with interactive sessions led by each of the ministers. If you are a new member, longtime member, or interested visitor, this is an ideal way to extend your knowledge of the faith, the church, and to build relationships. Lunch is provided.  No fee.

We want to extend a warm invitation to all members, friends, and visitors to our Welcome Workshop, Saturday, November 5, in the church library from 10am to 1pm.  And if you have already attended one, you are encouraged to do it again.  Because there's a different group of people each time, it's always a little different and a great way to meet new people.  Feel free to bring a friend.

For long time members this is a chance to be extend the hand of welcoming and hospitality to our new members and visitors as well as an opportunity to learn more about our church.   Each time we do this people report being surprised at how the time flies by and that they enjoyed the experience, learned a lot, and got to meet others.  It's a great event.

The workshop is free and we can provide childcare if you let us know in advance.  It is listed in the Adult Programs booklet as course A9.  To register, contact Adult Programs (Jeannette Wilson, 301 493 8300 or
jwilson@cedarlane.org@cedarlane.org). If you have questions contact our membership coordinator Andy Streich, astreich@cedarlane.org.

Raw Faith
November 4, 7:00 p.m. Cedar Lane
With special guest, the Rev. Marilyn Sewell

Raw FaithCedar Lane UU Church - in partnership with River Road UU Congregation and the Joseph Priestley District - is delighted to offer a screening of the documentary film "Raw Faith" as part of our "Meaning of Ministry" program series. Find out more about the series in the Fall Adult Programs booklet, page 14, or at http://cedarlane.org/ap/ REVFALL11.pdf; page 14.  Admission is open and free but donations are welcome ($5-$10 suggested.)

If you haven't heard of "Raw Faith," in the words of the film's website,"This surprisingly open and revealing documentary follows two years in the private life of a [Unitarian Universalist] minister. Marilyn Sewell is successful and beloved in the pulpit, but behind the scenes she is lonely and yearning for change. As she considers leaving the ministry, she realizes she will be leaving her only social network. Yet when she falls in love for the first time, she realizes she does not trust intimacy. A study in contrasts, Marilyn must rely on raw faith as she questions her future, her difficult past, her God and, most importantly, her ability to love." You may view a trailer here: http://alivemindcinema.com/req.php?req=static.php&page=RawFaithFIP The subject of the film, Marilyn Sewell, will be present that evening and will engage the audience after the film.

Time to Register! JOIN CEDAR LANE'S 5th HOUSE REBUILDING MISSION TO NEW ORLEANS

February 4-11, 2012

Official registration has started and will fill up, so contact us now.  We're having a great response from Cedar Laners who want to join our volunteer mission trip to help rebuild much-needed New Orleans (NOLA) housing, badly damaged by Hurricanes Katrina and Rita in 2005.   There's still room for YOU on our team.  Contact Cedar Lane's veteran trip leader Mike Burski <mga1960@earthlink.com> or team member Dianne Seiffert <seiffert@comcast.net> who will answer your questions and tell you how to register.

Imagine the frustrations of being out for almost seven years from your home - why so long?  how does that feel?  Owners' stories are sad; their bravery and spirit are breath-taking; their appreciation for our work is deeply heart-felt. Our Cedar Lane team, working with NOLA's expert nonprofit housing agency Rebuilding Together, spends 1 week helping to bring 1 house to fruition.  Daytimes we work hard; off-work we explore social justice history and culture of fascinating NOLA during the first week of Mardi Gras.  Don't have building skills? - not to worry: skilled house captains train us; there's a job for almost every ability.  NOLA needs you.  Our Cedar Lane team wants you!
