"Optimism in Hard Times"  Susan Davison Archer, Minister of

Religious Education

Our Unitarian and Universalist heritages are often noted as "optimistic" religions in contrast to the faiths from which they grew and separated. Is their early optimism still warranted in a faith for the world we inhabit?

Sunday Morning Forum:

Saving the Chesapeake: The Problems, the Politics, and the Law.   Our speaker, Russell Stevenson, will discuss what is ailing the Chesapeake Bay, why we have made so little progress in dealing with its problems over the last three decades, and the promise of current legal efforts to clean it up. Mr. Stevenson is the founder of the Chesapeake Legal Alliance, whose mission is to provide free legal services in support of efforts to protect and improve the Bay by matching lawyers willing to do pro bono work with clients needing legal help.

10:10 in the Chalice House Main Room (between services).

From the Ministers

Rev. Evan Keely

Members and friends of CLUUC should be proud of the generous response to last Sunday's Association Sunday effort to raise funds to support excellence in ministries of music, religious education and congregational leadership in UU congregations all over the country. It's not too late to contribute to this worthwhile effort. Visit http://uua.org/giving/sunday/index.shtml to donate online or by mail. The most generous congregation will win a special collaborative ministry visioning or training session customized to the strengths, challenges, and needs of the congregation. Could that be us? Could our generosity and enthusiasm set a standard for UU congregations nationwide? Of course!

Living the Mission

On October 22 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m., we will welcome members, families and friends to commemorate the 60th anniversary of Cedar Lane Unitarian Universalist Church with many opportunities for learning, growth, and celebration. "Living the Mission" is a multi-generational event planned to appeal to all members of our church community. We are organizing morning activities and workshops, performances and a dance, and offering food and beverages, along with a brief worship gathering and an anniversary tree planting.

Living the misson

We Care

The We Care program is a network led by volunteers who reach out to address short-term needs - food deliveries, rides to doctor's appointments, a listening ear in the event of a loss. The Cedar Lane congregation is organized geographically by "neighborhoods"; each neighborhood has at least one chairperson to coordinate support. Look at your nametag or the map in the church office to find your neighborhood.

Our hearts go out to Carol Joffe and Alan Bergstein (Neighborhood 16) with the death of Carol's mother, Helen, from complications from surgery.

Should you know of a member of our community in personal need, you are encouraged to reach out to them. If you learn that this person wishes to receive a response from the church, please contact Heather Janules at hjanules@cedarlane.org.  All ministers offer pastoral care to our members so  you are also encouraged to contact any member of the ministerial team.

Upcoming Sundays

October 16, 2011 9 a.m. and 11 a.m.
 "Blessing of the Animals"

Heather Janules, Associate Minister, Minister for Pastoral Care

"Who Rescued Whom? A Celebration of the Bond Between Humans and Other Animals"

Cedar Lane will do it again! On Sunday, October 16, Cedar Lane will offer our third annual Blessing of the Animals service. For those who are new to this tradition, the 9:00 service welcomes "virtual" animals only - photos, drawings and stuffed animals - so the allergic may enjoy worship too. The 11:00 service welcomes virtual and live animals (assuming they are vaccinated, leashed or contained and that they "play well with others.") We cannot promise any change in behavior after your animals have been blessed but many creatures have enjoyed coming to the congregation and the community has certainly enjoyed their presence.

Forum: Immigration 101.

For background, Knick Knickerbocker will review the main features of our country's immigration policies and practices from colonial times up to recent days.

10:10 in the Chalice House Main Room (between services)

Music Notes From the Director of Music

Dr. Henry Sgrecci

October 9

Energy and exuberance are the cornerstones of our musical offerings this morning. The Choir presents UU composer, Tom Benjamin's, light and joyful "Jazz Alleluia" as the Call to Worship.   Trumpeter Louis Armstrong first recorded "What a Wonderful World" in 1968, when he was already the elder statesman of jazz. Initially the song was not much of a hit, generating more interest in Great Britain than in the states. Twenty years later, after being featured in the hit movie, "Good Morning, Vietnam!," the song, with its hopeful, forward looking lyrics, finally reached iconic status. Esteemed choral conductor William L. Dawson was a pioneer in the field of African American music educators. He ran away from home as a teenager to attend the Tuskegee Institute where he became enthralled with music, both vocal and instrumental. Years later, after earning Bachelors and Masters degrees in music, he returned to the Institute in 1931 to teach and eventually became its Director and principal choral conductor. He developed the Tuskegee Institute Choir into a world class choral ensemble that was in demand throughout the U.S. and abroad. Mr. Dawson's arrangement of "Ev'ry Time I Feel the Spirit" is one of an extensive array of Spirituals that he brought to the contemporary choral field.

Special thanks to baritone soloist, Kevin Miller, for his rich contributions to today's service.

From the Church Administrator

What a busy week it has been, we had a wedding and a memorial service.  Mickey has made strides on finishing the makeover of the area outside of the kitchen, all between rentals and church events.  As a result of the earthquake, the building must have settled as we have had several doors that no longer open easily. We have concerns over leaks into the lower level of the Chapel wing that happened during the last heavy rains.  Does anyone know any building engineers that would have experience with what repairs to the cement apron surrounding the building would solve this ongoing problem?  Please let me know.  Lucy is preparing an up-to-date paper directory that will be available next week in the office so if you need one please stop by.

 The LGTB Task Force

National LGBT History Month (October) at Cedar Lane
During October, the LGBT Task Force will be hosting a number of activities in honor of National LGBT History Month and of National Coming Out Day (October 11th).  All members of the Cedar Lane Community (and friends from the larger community beyond Cedar Lane) are welcome to participate in these events.

*  A highlight for the month will be a celebratory exhibit in the main building vestibule area featuring a preview of the newest (and still evolving) photo-text exhibit by Family Diversity Projects--WE HAVE FAITH.  The focus of this new exhibit is on LGBT faith leaders, some of whom are well known to Cedar Laners.

Angels in America: Play Reading, Pizza and Beer:  Participants will
engage Angelsin a "table reading" of the play (no acting experience necessary) plus a stimulating discussion accompanied by a festive snack and an opportunity to socialize.  Friday, October 7th from 7:15 to 9:00 PM. (See page #23 in the Adult Programs Brochure for details)

*  Film showing and discussion of "Brother Ou
tsiBayard Rustinder: The Life of Bayard Rustin"--Friday, October 14th  7:15 to 9:30 PM:  "A master strategist and tireless activist, Bayard Rustin is best remembered as the organizer of the 1963 March on Washington, one of the largest nonviolent protests ever held in the United States. He brought Gandhi's protest techniques to the American civil rights movement, and helped mold Martin Luther King Jr. into an international symbol of peace and nonviolence. Despite these achievements, Rustin was silenced, threatened, arrested, beaten, imprisoned and fired from important leadership positions, largely because he was an openly gay man in a fiercely homophobic era. Five years in the making and the winner of numerous awards, BROTHER OUTSIDER presents a feature-length documentary portrait, focusing on Rustin's activism for peace, racial equality, economic justice and human rights."  ($5.00 entrance charge at the door.  Refreshments will be served.)

For further information about any of these events, contact Stephen Colgan smcolgan@hotmail.com or Marge Dimond Margeryjd@aol.com.

Mother Wove the Morning - A social justice night at the theatre!

A play about one woman's search for the feminine face of God will be performed on Fri Oct 21 and Sat Oct 22 at 8pm at the UU Congregation of Fairfax in Oakton, VA. This passionate and poignant play  takes the audience on a spiritual journey through history and the human heart.   The play was originally performed over 300 times as a one woman show by the author, Carol Lynn Pearson, both in the United States and Europe.  The UUCF production is a benefit for the Fistula Foundation.  The Fistula Foundation is dedicated to the elimination of fistula, a devastating injury caused by obstructed labor or violence, which affects nearly 2 million women in the poorest countries in the world.  Tickets are $20, with a $10 reduced price for students, seniors, and low income.  Advance tickets are available online at www.uucf.org

For more information about the production contact Susan Bennett scbennett@cox.net and Carmela Knepler carmelask@msn.com, for more information about the Fistula Foundation see their website www.fistulafoundation.org

An Opportunity ...

Cedar Laners have happily volunteered for four years now to work with students of Kensington-Parkwood Elementary School on Saul Road, very near church.  Come join us!

This year KPE needs:

First grade:   One person every weekday from 2 until 3:20 pm.  (It doesn't need the same person each day; it could be as many days as you'd like.)
Third grade:  One person Monday - Thursday from 2:55 until 3:20 pm.   Here again, you can "mix and match" any combination that's good for you!

The bulge of demographics is in the elementary schools.  This is where 90% of the 359 portable classrooms are - and 50% of the new principals. (source: MCPS).

Questions?  Please contact Nancy Janssen at: nancyjanssen@peoplepc.com or 301-588-1488.

When your annual workplace giving campaign kick offs this year, please select UU charities.  Beacon House, UUSJ and OpenDoor Housing Fund are neighborhood organizations formed by UUs from local congregations, and UUSC is an international human rights organization.   If you give through the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC), please remember

AMCAV update: Given a mandate by last year's 7G S2 class to raise awareness beyond the walls of Cedar Lane for this small grassroots organization helping and empowering women and children in DR Congo, Annette Scarpitta performed due diligence and - thanks to many Cedar Laners - passed the August Open Challenge on GlobalGiving.org. Our project, www.globalgiving.org/dy/fundraiser/prevfund/gg.html, remains up and available for additional donations. This year's 2011-12 7G S2 class has elected to continue the legacy of supporting AMCAV by selling Paper to Pearls jewelry after each service in the lounge. For each sale, half the amount goes to the beaders' microenterprise in Uganda and the other half goes to the AMCAV fund to send 150 children to school. We have new styles and colors, so come on by and take a look! For questions or to book special jewelry appointments if you are unable to meet us in the lounge, contact Annette at annettecedarlane@spamex.com.

Carpool to the 7th Annual Joseph Priestley District Racial Justice Conference, Oct. 14-15.  Our carpool leaves Cedar Lane at 5 pm on Friday and 8 am on Saturday for the UU Church of Arlington.

Mr. Stevenson is the founder of the Chesapeake Legal Alliance, whose mission is to provide free legal services in support of efforts to protect and improve the Bay by matching lawyers willing to do pro bono work with clients needing legal help.

Connection Circles (CC) Want You

Start the RE year by joining fellow Cedar Laners in an engaging circle! Connection Circles are an opportunity to gather in a small group with a facilitator. Living the Full Rainbow Flag

This group will meet to connect lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) members and allies in the UU community who face oppression for supporting full LGBT equality. The rainbow flag is a symbol of LGBT pride and has been used since the 1970s. The original flag consisted of 8 stripes with specific meaning; hot pink for sexuality, red for life, orange for healing, yellow for sunlight, green for nature, turquoise for magic/art, indigo/blue for serenity/harmony and violet for spirit. Members of this group will relate significant developments in their lives at "check-in" and develop a topic of mutual interest based on one of the eight themes of the rainbow flag. The group will be meeting on the second Tuesday of the month, November through June.

For a full description of all our Connection Circles, please refer to the Adult Programs Fall 2011 brochure. There is a group for everyone! Questions can be sent to the RE office, or referred to the Rev. Heather Janules, hjanules@cedarlane.org.

HELP WANTED

Chalice with Flame
To bridge the six-month continuation of the 2011-12 Religious Education year following the Rev. Susan Archer's departure January 1, until our RE Interim begins next August, the Board of Trustees is actively seeking congregants to assist with the ongoing tasks of the RE program from January through June 2012 - including a paid supervisor to oversee the entire RE program and volunteers willing to help. Recognizing the long history and strength of our current RE program and the many talented Cedar Laners who have longstanding experience with it, we will complete the upcoming RE year through a combination of lay-led ministry and increased staff support. More information is forthcoming, including an information session in the library after both services this Sunday. Please contact Sara Deshler, sdeshler@cedarlane.org , if you are interested in helping on a paid or volunteer basis toward our common goal of a continuously strong RE program.
