From the Ministers

From Heather

I returned from our week of work in New Orleans with disaster on my mind. As our Intern Minister Nancy Pellegrini named in her column, it is sobering to go to this city- six years after the levee breaches and flooding - and still see homes that likely haven't been touched since Hurricanes Katrina and Rita. Renewal comes glacially slow and, for the people who call New Orleans home, I imagine the spiritual renewal is equally as gradual. Recovery from trauma can be a painful odyssey which, like grief, has its own time table and trajectory.

Soon after our return, our region had a relatively mild but significant earthquake. Then, just a few days later, Hurricane Irene hit, dumping lots of rain on our region, felling trees and leaving many without electricity.

But disasters aren't limited to the natural kind. Upon my return home, I learned that some of our friends are living through their own personal disasters - grief, troubling diagnoses, news of a loved one's serious illness, family conflict. When the earthquake hit, I was in my office, meeting with a family from the neighborhood to plan a memorial for their twenty-five-year-old daughter who passed suddenly and unexpectedly. Time and again these past few days, I have been reminded of both the preciousness of life and the profound vulnerability we share.

It is, perhaps, a cliché but I have also been reminded of what gets us through: resilience. When faced with challenges, great and small, something carries us, one step, one moment at a time. This strength grows with self-care and community support. This strength grows with love. Sometimes we do not know it is present until we are tested. In both days of quiet and days of disaster, I give thanks for all that holds us throughout the literal and figurative storms of life.

On September 11, our community will come together - to reconnect, to remember the losses that began with the terrorist attacks ten years before, to begin a congregational year together. In gathering this way, we mourn together, sharing our grief and confusion born of the past decade and build that which leads us to healing, to resilience. While our gathering invites us to consider the reality of disasters, it will also be a celebration of faith and community. I also give thanks for having a place to bring our grief and to build our hope. Hope to see you there...

From Susan

It's just NOT TRUE!!!!  All of you who have called or emailed after reading the current UU World (who would have guessed so many read it so carefully!), please know that under "Milestones" somehow my name plus River Road plus Interim Ministry got placed together.  I still haven't figured out HOW this happened but have asked the UUA Transitions office to request a correction!  Yes, I retire from full time ministry in December but I still plan to move to Greensboro and be a very-present grandma.  Someday, I might do part-time ministry or even an interim of short duration, but no plans at all in the immediate future!  Sorry for any kerfluffel this error caused, but I am still laughing.
With continued affection, Susan

We Care

The We Care program is a network led by volunteers who reach out to address short-term needs - food deliveries, rides to doctor's appointments, a listening ear in the event of a loss. The Cedar Lane congregation is organized geographically by "neighborhoods"; each neighborhood has at least one chairperson to coordinate support. Look at your nametag or the map in the church office to find your neighborhood.

We rejoice with Ai-Ling Louie (Neighborhood 5) with the birth of her first grandchild! Benjamin Louie Prange was born to parents Melanie and Eric Prange on Wednesday, August 31 at 8 lbs and 8 oz. All are well. Hooray!

A message from Lois Delaha (Neighborhood 10), still recovering at Randolph Hills rehab center, "Dear Cedar Laners: Thank you so much for all the loving cards, visits, phone calls and tender, loving care. I love all of you and am thankful for all the good memories of the church community."

A reminder that a Service in Celebration of the Life of Margot Schumm will be held this Sunday, September 4 at 2:00pm in the Auditorium. All are welcome.

We celebrate with our Bell Choir as they prepare for their first off-site "gig" with their expanded bell set, a concert at Asbury Methodist Village on November 13. Hooray!

Should you know of a member of our community in personal need, you are encouraged to reach out to them. If you learn that this person wishes to receive a response from the church, please contact Heather Janules at

hjanules@cedarlane.org. All ministers offer pastoral care to our members so you are also encouraged to contact any member of the ministerial team.

Social Justice Council

By now you've likely heard about the proposed Keystone XL oil pipeline.

We need to do everything we can to stop this massive, 1,700 mile-long pipeline from connecting the dirty tar sands of Canada to the oil refineries of Texas.

Earlier this week we gave you the chance to send an e-mail to President Obama urging him to reject this dangerous pipeline. Now you have another opportunity to make your voice heard.

Tomorrow there will be a rally in front of the White House in opposition to the pipeline. It's crucial that we demonstrate to President Obama just how many of us oppose having this massive oil pipeline built through America's heartland.

Here are the details:

WHAT: Rally to stop the Keystone XL Tar Sands Pipeline
WHEN: Saturday, September 3rd, 12:00 PM
WHERE: Lafayette Park, in front of the White House

The final decision on whether or not to allow the pipeline to move forward rests with President Obama, so he needs to hear from us now. Make your voice heard this weekend and please encourage your friends and family in the area to come as well.

Thank you for all that you do,

Gene Karpinski
President
League of Conservation Voters
