We Care

The We Care program is a network led by volunteers who reach out to address short-term needs - food deliveries, rides to doctor's appointments, a listening ear in the event of a loss. The Cedar Lane congregation is organized geographically by "neighborhoods"; each neighborhood has at least one chairperson to coordinate support. Look at your nametag or the map in the church office to find your neighborhood.

Prayers are with Marjorie Melton (Neighborhood 25) who suffered a broken leg from a fall. She is due to have surgery on Friday at Shady Grove Adventist Hospital.

Our hearts go out to Jean Schaible (N29) who is mourning the loss of her brother-in-law, Harlan Bigger, after a struggle with bone cancer and lymphoma.

General Assembly was a time for many Cedar Lane alumni to shine! The Rev. Claire Feingold Thoryn, who grew up and was ordained at Cedar Lane, led a morning worship service, which included her mentors, The Revs Vanessa Southern and Bobbie Nelson, Cedar Lane's Minister Emerita. Shortly after this service, our Minister Emeritus, the Rev. Ken MacLean, received an award from the International Council of Unitarians and Universalists for his service to UU communities beyond the United States. In the Service of the Living Tradition, the Rev. Archene Turner was welcomed into Final Fellowship and the Rev. Kristin Grassel Schmidt, who also grew up and was ordained at Cedar Lane, was welcomed into Preliminary Fellowship. Glenn Farley, who was raised at Cedar Lane and is completing his ministerial studies, made a presentation to the delegates on behalf of the UUA's Committee on Socially Responsible Investing, which he serves as co-chair. Hooray!

Our healing wishes remain with Rita Pittillo (N9). Increasing pain during her convalescence led Rita's doctors to determine that she needed a hip replacement. The surgery at Shady Grove Hospital was successful and she is now recovering well at Shady Grove-Genesis Health Care in Rockville. Visitors are welcome but please call first: 3010315-1919.

And, on a practical note, we welcome Helen Pechacek as the new Chair of the We Care program. Helen is a long-time chairperson for N29 and brings great energy and compassion to her lay ministry. Thank you, Helen, for your service and leadership, to your neighborhood and the program as a whole!

Should you know of a member of our community in personal need, you are encouraged to reach out to them. If you learn that this person wishes to receive a response from the church, please contact Heather Janules at hjanules@cedarlane.org All ministers offer pastoral care to our members so you are also encouraged to contact any member of the ministerial team.
