Pittsfield Prevention Partnership Newsletter

October 2010
Dear PPP member,
School is back in full swing, and the PPP has been working with key players to collaborate on strategies that engage and impact youth.  The greater community of Pittsfield also needs to play a role in getting the message out that we care about creating a healthy and safe community for our young people.  Read on to find ways to communicate that message with us.

S.A.Y. It Proud Winners at the Melville Block Party
The Melville Block Party was a terrific venue for the S.A.Y. It Proud Awards!  There were loads of kids in the audience to cheer our winners:  Jessica Lovellette, Julius Reese, Kiana Reid and Keiana West.  Cynthia Quinones, the chair of the SAY It Proud Committee, and Bob Cornwell, PPP Steering Committee member, were on hand to present the fabulous prizes from Greylock Federal Credit Union, Pittsfield Cooperative Bank, and the Pittsfield Family YMCA.  Read more about our winners in this article from the Advocate Weekly.  There are more photos on our Facebook page!  Keep those nominations coming in for next time.
Berkshire County Rounds Up 800+ lbs of Drugs
Volunteers helped out at the Rx Round Up on Sept. 25th to collect and count unused meds.  The DEA arranged to have all the drugs destroyed at the end of the day.  This was a great way for folks to dispose of unused and expired medications in a safe way, keeping them out of the water system and out of the hands of kids.  Thanks to all who volunteered, and all who dropped off their meds!
Guiding Good Choices Workshops Oct. 13 - Nov. 10
Guiding Good Choices is a series of workshops for parents of children 9 - 14.  Parents learn to strengthen family bonds and reduce the risk of factors associated with teenage drug use.  Workshop, meal, childcare, and transportation provided at no cost.  Wednesdays, 10/13, 10/20, 10/27. 11/3, and 11/10 from 5:00 to 7:30 pm.  Morningside Community School, 100 Burbank Street, Pittsfield.  For more info contact Lori Munn 413 441 7011 or McInerney Parent Services 413 499 3556.  Big Y gift certificates provided to those who attend all five workshops.
Stay tuned for the next PPP Quarterly Meeting!  We invite the community to share in the successes of the PPP and celebrate those members who have been key in moving us toward our goals.
Sincerely,

Karen Cole

PPP table
Parent/Teacher conferences begin on November 13 in Pittsfield Public Schools.  This is a great opportunity to reach out to parents with information about the PPP and engage them in our work.  We will provide a crate with a table cloth, sign up sheets, pamphlets, and goodies to hand out.  We would like to have a presence at as many schools as possible, so please sign up!  Email:  kcole@berkshireunitedway.org
