Greetings!
Happy July! Summer is finally here and although the weather has been cooler than normal, the salmon know what season it is and they are right on schedule. So far chinook by the dozens and sockeye by the thousands have been making their way through the Ballard Locks. Most of those chinook are bound for Issaquah. If this year is like past years, we'll see the first salmon in mid to late August at the hatchery. Other news of note: We're happy to announce that we have launched our newly designed website -- just in time for the start of 2010 season! We thank Web Studio 180 for donating most of the redesign work. The remainder will be paid for with a City of Issaquah tourism grant. Best "fishes," Gestin Suttle FISH Executive Director

Salmon camp scholarship fund established in memory of wildlife fan Shirley Biccum
A scholarship fund for FISH's Summer
Salmon Science Camp has been established in memory of Shirley Biccum, who was
involved in King County's Salmon
Watchers program. Biccum, of Redmond, passed away
in November last year. She was 80. Biccum was a long-time member of a
local book club called the First Monday Fiction Club that meets once a month in
the Issaquah Barnes & Noble cafe. Fellow book club members wanted to honor
Biccum's memory and thought creating a memorial salmon camp scholarship fund was a
fitting tribute "because of her love for the earth and all its creatures," said
Lynda Wimbush, a fellow book club member. The fund will enable students with
limited resources to learn about the fascinating life of Pacific salmon and
watershed stewardship. For additional information or to
apply for the scholarship, please contact Celina Steiger, FISH education
coordinator, at Celina@issaquahfish.org
or 425-392-8025.

Mark your calendar! FISH docent training around the corner
The salmon are coming! The salmon are coming! The salmon are just now coming through the Ballard Locks and will be arriving in Issaquah in September. If you'd like to make a big splash as a FISH volunteer, training is just around the corner.
Dates: Sept. 8, 6:00 p.m.-8:30 p.m. - master docent training Sept. 11, 9 a.m.-3 p.m. - new docent training Sept. 11, 11 a.m.-3 p.m. - returning docent training
The Issaquah Salmon Hatchery is the most-visited hatchery in the
state and relies on a committed team of docents (educational volunteers)
to provide tours to visitors who come to see magnificent salmon spawn
in Issaquah Creek. FISH docents foster a sense of wonder about salmon
for thousands of visitors who come to the hatchery every year.
Send an e-mail to fishvolunteer@msn.com or call 425-427-0259 if you are interested in becoming a "FIN-tastic" FISH volunteer!

Many thanks! We'd like to thank the Puget Sound Energy Foundation for the recent announcement that it will award FISH a $2,500 grant! The award will help pay for FISH's education program. Puget Sound Energy (PSE) and the PSE Foundation have been enduring supporters of FISH over many years. Without their help, FISH simply could not offer the salmon education and tours that are such an important part of Issaquah's identity. THANK YOU, too, to FISH's loyal supporters, which include the City of Issaquah, Microsoft Corp., Kiwanis Club of Issaquah, the City of Sammamish and many others! FOLLOW US.
