Something to Think About...
To Be or To Do?
That is the Question

Article from "Great Leaders Lead Like Jesus" December issue.

Our article for this month is a reminder that God is more interested in who we are and are becoming than what we do. At this busy time of the year, it's always good to reflect on being rather than doing.

Lead Like Jesus believes that anytime, anyone influences the thoughts, actions or behaviors of another that they are engaging in leadership. So as a parent or a CEO, a coach or a doctor, YOU are a leader. Whether as a life role or organizational leader, approaching each new day as a series of things to do can be a nasty habit. We are not only tempted to start working on the list we went to bed with but to quickly include the new onslaught of E-mail, voice mails, faxes, etc. that may have accumulated during the night or to be quickly derailed by the ever necessary tasks of home, family and volunteer responsibilities. It is easy to surrender our sense of self-worth to the score card of our never ending to-do lists.

Wrapping a little pre-emptive prayer around our own pre-determined personal agendas may seem as prudent as re-charging the cell phone overnight. But, it may have little to do with making the day any more significant or satisfying.

No matter how urgent or high-purposed your to-do list may seem, when the price paid for it's completion is a gradual loss of a sense of being and meaning separate from performance, you have made a bad choice. Remember, Satan would love for you to buy into his philosophy that your self-worth is equal to your performance plus the opinion of others.

A partial antidote to the "I am my to-do list" syndrome, is to develop your Daily To-Be List before you finalize your To-Do List. The thought that we were created as Human Beings not Human Doings reminds us that God loves us and relates to us on the being not the doing level.

If He did it the other way round, we would never have any confidence that we have done enough or done the right stuff to relax in His company. We also might end up adding a few things to our to-do list to feed our own ego's and appetites that weren't on God's agenda in the first place.

Here is a plan for developing a Daily To-Be List that will help you sort out the priorities of the day during a time when the pressure of To-Do became overwhelming. There is great peace and confidence in the process because of God's grace that He always provides.

1. Take a few quiet moments at the beginning of the day to ask God expectantly to fill your mind with how He would have you be today in your life role and organizational leadership responsibilities.

2. Write down what comes to mind as your To-Be List.

3. Thank God for being willing to use you today in bringing in His kingdom through your life role and organizational leadership responsibilities.

4. Ask God to open your heart, mind, eyes and ears to how much He loves each person you will meet today and to help you treat them accordingly

5. With these thoughts in mind review your To-Do list and see whether there are any items that are in conflict with your To-Be list and modify or eliminate them as appropriate.

6. At the end of the day review your To-Be List as your score card for the success of the day. Then put down the results at the foot of the Cross and rest assured that God loves you.

Here are a few starters for your To-Be List:

  • Be still and know that I am God (Psalm 46:10)

  • Be quick to listen, slow to speak and slow to anger (James 1:19)

  • Be holy because I am holy (I Peter1:16 )

  • Be joyful always, pray continually give thanks continually in all circumstances(1 Thessalonians 5:17)

  • Be at peace with one another (Mark 9:50 )

  • Be transformed by the renewing of your mind (Romans 12:2)

"On The Road Again"

by Pastor Daniel LeCouteur

It sounds like an appropriate title for someone who just traveled over 2000 miles getting to and from the most recent Via de Cristo weekends.  All the travel was necessitated by the fact that I had sponsored participants for both the men's and women's weekends and... that just two years ago my wife and I had  moved to Traverse City so that I could take the call to Family of Faith Lutheran Church.  All the travel may be an example of sacrificial giving, but it's only one example amongst the many examples of sacrificial giving in the community known as Good News.

Regardless, the title has little or nothing to do with these past weekends.  Rather, it addresses the journey that all of us are, or should be, on.  It's been more than twenty years since I made my weekend and since that time many things have happened in my life. I'd like to share a couple of them with you.  First of all, I have not only been in reunion almost the entire time, but after twenty years I am currently on only my third reunion group.  Something else that happened was that just after making my weekend I participated in a men's serenade that had no guitarists and consequently took up the guitar so that this would never happen again in my lifetime. I am pleased to report that we had six guitars at this last serenade.  And just a few years later, I answered the call to enter seminary and become a servant of the Lord by entering the ministry.  Wow, what a journey! This may be true, but it is far from over, and it's important to note that it began with the weekend and continues in reunion and that is so very important to my journey.  Why?

I dare say that my wife and I have also experienced some difficulties on this journey and although I don't truthfully know if they are any more difficult than others have experienced, what I do know is that this method and this community have nurtured and inspired both my wife and I to become the people of God that we were intended to be.  That means that of course means that no matter how difficult things got, we were able to turn to the Lord for strength and perseverance.  And during the good times were were able to lift our arms in praise for His many blessings.

We are currently living in an area that we feel is close to Eden.  The Grand Traverse area is an absolutely gorgeous area to be in (even in the winter).  We are also both employed, although Sue's job is an hour away, in Manistee.  And we have a loving community in Family of Faith.  And yet...the journey isn't over yet.  No, just like so many of you that are reading this article - I am still trying to figure out what it means to be a person of God.

God Loves You and so do I,

 Pr. Daniel LeCouteur
