Ry's Reflection
NOTE: This column is only the opinion of Ryan Eggenberger and he does not represent or speak for GNVdC but from his own personal view.
"Sacrifice'" by Ryan Eggenberger I have had the idea of sacrifice on my mind a lot lately, particularly because of the hard work and dedication I witness of those who invest themselves in their work, kids, marriages, and projects. I've been blessed to know many wonderful people in this regard. Back before the 60's there was an exhortation after the wedding rite that the priest would tell the couple. Included was the following line: "Sacrifice is often difficult and irksome. Love can make it easy: perfect love can make it a joy." Reading that line quickly, its easy to miss what its saying. Read it again slowly allows us to appreciate the depth of what is said there. Sacrifice is indeed difficult at times, especially now when we are used to extra rest and relaxation during the summer. Now, though, school is beginning, campaigns are running, and business is in general ramping up again. Its easy to forget others during this time and to put our own wants in front of others needs. Let us remember the sacrifice of our Lord and how he did it just because he wanted to. He didn't have to, and it certainly cost him a lot- even his own life. As leaders and as disciples of Jesus, we are called to live out that same sacrifice for others around us. Of course dying to self is typically not fun. But with love, the pain of putting others first will be easy. With perfect love, which is the love of God, loving people can be an occasion of joy. Imagine if the whole world knew that. Imagine if every Christian really knew that. It would change the entire world.
