~ How to Keep Your Silver Shining ~ |
Did you know that silver has the highest polish luster of all metals used in jewelry yet tarnishes the easiest? Silver is softer than gold or platinum so surface scratches are unavoidable. You may be able to prevent your silver from getting tarnished or scratched by using the ideas below but the best way of keeping them shining is for your jeweler to periodically clean and polish your jewelry.Silver gets tarnished, or oxidized, by water, skin oil, cosmetics or even air over time. The good news is that the tarnish layer is very thin and can be removed easily by using special polishing cloths or silver cleaning liquids which are commercially available. Once polished, try to store your silver in a dry, chemical free environment. Therefore paper or plastic shouldn't be used to wrap the pieces because plastic products and paper may contain acids. If possible silver jewelry should be kept in a box without touching other jewelry to avoid scratches. A thin layer of rhodium plating - a platinum family metal - is becoming more available for silver and could help maintain silver's luster. But the best way to keep your silver jewelry looking its best is to have it professionally cleaned by your jeweler. |
