~ Greatest Day in Baseball History ~ | |
Most everyone here in St. Louis knows what an incredible comeback the Cardinals made in September, coming from 8-1/2 games back to win the wild card birth on the final day of the season. But, when viewed in a historical context, after more than 200,000 games and 111 years, that day the Cardinals clinched, Wednesday, September 28th, 2011, may go down as the greatest day in baseball history.
- The Braves, who lost to the Cardinals, tied the record for the worst September collapse in the 111 years of baseball history; 25 minutes later Boston surpassed the record by losing to Baltimore.
- In real time, Tampa Bay won the wildcard birth three minutes after Boston lost.
- The Yankees, who lost to Tampa, had not lost when having a seven run lead in the 8th inning since 1953.
- This year, prior to Wednesday, the Red Sox were 76-0 when having the lead in the 8th inning or later.
- Boston, Atlanta & New York all came within one out of winning, but lost.
- Evan Longoria of Tampa Bay became only the 2nd player in history to hit a walk-off homer that put his team in the playoffs. Bobby Thompson's "Shot Heard Round the World' in 1953 was the other.
- The Red Sox had less than a 2 percent chance of losing their game against Baltimore, when the Orioles were down to their last strike. They lost.
- The Rays had less than a 2 percent chance of winning in the bottom of the 9th, with pinch hitter Dan Johnson also down to his last strike. They won.

~ Buying A Diamond ~ | |
(This is a repeat of an article we ran last year but the info is invaluable).
Every day, diamond shoppers at many jewelry stores and discount outlets are told they can buy a high-quality stone at a discount price. But there's no such thing as a free lunch; if you're quoted an unbelievable price that's exactly what it is, unbelievable.
These stores claim to have "the best" simply by having their diamonds evaluated by labs specializing in soft grading, a good thing for the lab and the store, but not for the customer. Having lower standards for diamond color, clarity and especially cut guarantees that the customer will pay more than he or she should for the quality received.
Your best bet when buying a diamond is to learn as much about diamond quality as possible before the purchase. If you want to go beyond the basics, you can spend just 30 minutes with the educational tutorials on our website and end up with more knowledge than many jewelry salespeople you'll run into. We'll give you the information needed to get past buzzwords and recognize true cut performance and precision to ensure you get what you pay for.
With over 60 years of combined experience the Summa Jewelers obsession is diamonds that are the most precisely cut and highest performing, diamonds that reflect light with an almost magical quality, the top 1%. Learn your stuff, shop around and then come in and challenge us. You'll be glad you did.
