"Home" by Edgar Guest | |
It don't make a difference how rich ye get t' be,
How much yer chairs and tables cost, how great the luxury;
It ain't home t' ye, though it be the palace of a king,
Until somehow yer soul is sort o' wrapped round everything.
Within the walls there's got t' be some babies born an' then... Right there ye've got t' bring em up t' women good, an' men; Home ain't a place that gold can buy or get up in a minute; Afore it's home there's got t' be a heap o' living in it.

~ Turkey Day Game ~ | |

This Thanksgiving marks the 103rd year of the Kirkwood - Webster Groves Turkey Day Game, the oldest Thanksgiving Day rivalry west of the Mississippi. The Pioneers and The Statesmen have played 109 times since 1901. The rivalry became a Thanksgiving tradition in 1907. The game alternates between Moss Field (Webster Groves) on even years and Lyons Field (Kirkwood) on odd years.
At stake is the 400 pound Frisco Bell, donated by the Frisco Railroad Company in 1952. The winner of the game gets the bell until the following year, the loser the Little Brown Jug.
The tradition includes not only the football game, but the Friendship Dance, held every year at the high school not hosting the game, pep rallies on the last day of school before the game (Tuesday) and the Wednesday night before the game and also a bonfire after the Wednesday night pep rally.
The contest itself draws thousands of spectators each year. ESPN has recognized the game and Sports Illustrated ran a multi-page article on the tradition in December '02.
Around these parts, this game is a big deal. Here's hoping everyone has a Happy Thanksgiving and buy your Turkey Day tickets early for the noon kickoff at Moss Field. |

This Month in History..."Big Fitz" Vanishes |
| | SS Edmund Fitzgerald | Sometime after 7:00 pm on the night of November 10, 1975 while crossing Lake Superior during a massive winter storm with 80 mph winds and 25 foot waves, the SS Edmund Fitzgerald sank quickly and almost without a trace in Canadian waters near Whitefish Bay. The largest Great Lakes freighter of its day, "Big Fitz" was carrying 26,000 tons of iron ore. No distress signal was ever received, all 29 seamen aboard were lost and no bodies were ever recovered. Canadian folksinger Gordon Lightfoot inspired popular interest in the disaster with his 1976 ballad, "The Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald". |
