Aide is School-Related Employee of the Year | | |

SARASOTA COUNTY - The Sarasota County School District has selected an aide to special-needs children as its 2012 School-Related Employee of the Year.
Vivian Stornes, who works with kindergarten students with autism at Lamarque Elementary School in North Port, received this year's honor at the district's 23rd annual School-Related Employee of the Year awards luncheon, held May 9 at Michael's on East.
The paraprofessional aide was chosen from among 50 nominees who work as support staff members in the district's schools and departments, all of whom were recognized at the event. Read more... |

Pine View is fourth in national math challenge | | |

NEW YORK - A team of advanced calculus students from the Sarasota County School District's Pine View School in Osprey placed fourth among nearly 1,000 teams that competed in the 2012 Moody's Mega Math Challenge, a one-of-a-kind math contest sponsored by the Moody's Foundation and the Society for Industrial and Applied Mathematics.
Team 218 from Pine View was one of six finalists that competed for the top award in New York City on April 26. They received the fourth place Meritorious Team Prize and will share a $7,500 scholarship award. The team members were Patrick Braga, Andrew Foster, Anthony Grebe, Kevin Griffin and Alison Lui. They were coached by Pine View mathematics teacher Christine DeVeau.
A second Pine View team composed of Michael Cetola, James Fong, Josh Palmer, Kenneth Smith and Jeremy Kemp and coached by mathematics teacher Ann Hankinson was one of six semi-finalists. Read more...

Administrators to have new roles in 2012-13 | | |

Booker Middle takes first in state History Fair | | |

They will compete with students from across the U.S. at National History Day in Washington, D.C., June 10-14.
TALLAHASSEE - Three students from Booker Middle School in Sarasota received first-place honors in their category at the Florida State History Fair, held April 29-May 1 in Tallahassee. Eighth-grade students Camille Armington, Kaley deLeon and Caitlin Gish were recognized in the Junior Division/Group Website for "Amelia Earhart: Aviator for Women's Rights."
The site explores the life of the aviation pioneer, whose plane disappeared during a flight in June 1937. The website includes a timeline, photo gallery, research paper and quotes about and by Earhart. To visit the website, click here.

Riverview High opens Aquascience Greenhouse | | |

SARASOTA - Students and staff at Riverview High School celebrated the grand opening of the school's new Aquascience Greenhouse May 5. An estimated 300 guests were guided through a presentation in the school's planetarium and a tour of the 30-by-72-foot greenhouse, featuring a demonstration of student projects.
Together, the greenhouse and the school's existing planetarium form an educational demonstration site designed to teach students and adults of all ages about the undersea and outer-space environments.
"Our 'Stars to Starfish' approach to teaching will provide
innovative opportunities for elementary, middle and high school students from throughout Sarasota County and beyond to learn STEM: science, technology, engineering and math," said Jan Davis, curriculum coordinator at RHS. Read more... |

Sarasota County Schools News Briefs
High schools throughout the district are holding graduation ceremonies in May and early June. For a calendar of these and other end-of-the-year events click here.
The negotiating team for the School Board of Sarasota County reached an agreement May 4 with the Sarasota Classified/Teachers Association on a contract for the 2012-2013 school year. The agreement will provide a supplemental one-year bonus for most employees. For more information click here.

A recent independent study of the school district by MGT of America, a Tallahassee-based consulting firm that has conducted efficiency studies of public school systems throughout the U.S., concluded that "The Sarasota County School District is one of the best-run systems that MGT has reviewed. Morale and performance, including innovative practices, are unusually high. MGT typically finds 50 or fewer commendations, while Sarasota County Schools garnered 73."
