Sarasota High to stage 'A Christmas Carol'

SARASOTA - Taking a lesson from the play they will perform based on a Charles Dickens story, students at Sarasota High will donate $2 from each ticket sold for matinee and evening performances Saturday, Dec. 10, to help less-fortunate families who are struggling during the holidays. 

 

"A Christmas Carol" will be staged at 7 p.m., Tuesday, Dec. 6 through Saturday, Dec. 10, and at 2 p.m. Saturday, in the SHS auditorium. Tickets are $8 for students (grades K-12) and $10 for adults. Read more... 

 

Zucker elected chair of Sarasota School Board

   
NEW SCHOOL BOARD LEADER: Caroline Zucker was elected chairwoman of the School Board of Sarasota County and will serve from November 2011 until November 2012. 

 

 

SARASOTA - At the annual reorganization meeting of the School Board of Sarasota County Nov. 22, members of the board elected Caroline Zucker as chairwoman, succeeding Frank Kovach. Carol Todd was elected vice chairwoman. Chairmanship of the board rotates each November among the five members. Zucker and Todd will serve until the board's next annual election of the chair and vice chair in November 2012.
 

"I know this is not going to be an easy year," Zucker told the Sarasota Herald-Tribune, referring to the ongoing budget challenges the school board and district will continue to face in the next fiscal year. "But there is optimism; there is hope for the future." Read more... 

 

Tatum Ridge donates books to Cyesis at RHS

SARASOTA - Families from Tatum Ridge Elementary School donated more than 1,000 books to the Cyesis teen parent program at Riverview High School. Representatives of the Tatum Ridge Parent Teacher Organization and the school's staff presented the books to Riverview Principal Linda Nook at RHS Nov. 21.
 
 

The books are designed to encourage reading among all members of the Cyesis family, which currently includes 60 students and 43 babies. The donations consist of children's picture books and storybooks, youth chapter books, and adult fiction and non-fiction. Read more...  

CYD Gingerbread Festival set for Dec. 9-11

 

WINTER WONDERLAND:  More than 125 gingerbread houses created by Sarasota County students and other artists will be on display Dec. 9-11 at Westfield Sarasota Square Mall. Above is a house from 2010 designed by a class at Brookside Middle School.


 

 

SARASOTA - Holiday creations by students from elementary, middle and high schools, as well as businesses and organizations throughout the county, will be on display Friday Dec. 9, through Sunday, Dec. 11, at Westfield Sarasota Square Mall (Macy's wing).

 

The Third Annual Community Youth Development Gingerbread Festival, a wonderland of candy-covered gingerbread houses set amid twinkling lights and snowy streets, will be open during regular mall hours (10 a.m.-9 p.m. Friday and Saturday, noon to 5:30 p.m. Sunday). Creations include replicas of familiar Sarasota landmarks. The suggested donation, which supports CYD's positive programs for young people in Sarasota County, is just $1.

Venice Middle students present 'Mulan Jr.'

VENICE - Venice Middle School students in grades six-eight will star in "Disney's Mulan Jr.," a stage musical based on the 1998 Disney animated film "Mulan" and the story "Fa Mulan" by Robert D. San Souci. The show will be presented at 7 p.m. on two nights, Monday, Dec. 12, and Thursday, Dec. 15, in the VMS cafeteria. Admission is free.

 

The play tells the story of Mulan, a brave girl from ancient China. To save her ailing father from certain death in the army, she secretly goes to war in his place, risking her life and her family's honor. Through her journey, Mulan finds herself and becomes one of China's greatest heroes.

 

"Mulan" is the first VMS play guided by Kathleen Crane, the school's new music teacher and chorus director. Read more...

Sarasota County Schools and the University of South Florida Sarasota-Manatee will host free seminars about college financial aid at seven local schools in January. The sessions will provide information about financial aid opportunities for funding higher education at universities and other postsecondary institutions. Click here for details.

 

The proposed calendars for school years 2012-2013 and 2013-2014 are available for review. The public may comment through Sunday, Dec. 18, via the Contact Us page of the district website.
