Students salute veterans in schools, community | | |

STUDENTS SALUTE VETERANS: Eighth-grade McIntosh Middle School student Alex Aguayo leads 92-year-old Bob Weiler, who served on the crew of a B-29 bomber in World War II, into the school's Salute to Veterans Nov. 9. Veterans of several wars and all branches of the armed forces, as well as active military, were honored at this and other events at several schools.
SARASOTA COUNTY - During the week of Veterans Day, schools around the county saluted those who have served in the armed forces. Veterans and active members of the military were encouraged to attend, and many did.
The lesson that "freedom isn't free" was echoed on school marquee signs and in student essays, songs and displays featured during the ceremonies.
The Veterans Day parade and flag dedication ceremony in downtown Sarasota featured bands from Sarasota, Riverview and Booker high schools, as well as the entire student body of Sarasota Military Academy. The Venice High School band participated in the ceremony at Patriots Park in Venice.
